Rolling Stone gave it

"I'll stay with you/Till hell freezes over," Bernard Sumner intones on the ninth New Order album. Chances are he's not referring to his bandmates: Allegedly the final release from the massively influential dance-rock group's original lineup (bassist Peter Hook departed in 2007), Lost was cobbled of outtakes from its previous album, 2005's lackluster Waiting for the Siren's Call. Surprisingly, it's a much better record. The mesmeric dance-floor electronics on tracks such as "Shake It Up" recall Eighties classics like "Blue Monday," while Sumner's six-string chime and plangently defiant vocals make this accidental swan song feel industrial-grade wistful.

I agree.

Thanks guys! That would be one job I would be most happy to accept.

Have been listening to Sugarcane and Hellbent on the subway I as I head to work in the morning for the past week or so....gets me in a good mood for work, that's for sure.

The bass and guitar work in Recoil is just gorgeous.

The thing with recoil I think is that they should have cut off 45 sec to 1 minute in the end, it kind of keeps on going in the end in my opinion.

I quite like that actually. I must be getting old - enjoying the mellowness too much. I wonder if I'm the only person who expects George Michael's voice when the vocal first comes in on that track. I'm not even a GM fan. Uh oh

I agree. Us older folks seem to appreciate New Order's musicianship more than the short-attention-span recent converts. It might be why I forgive Barney's occasionally clunky couplets. The tunes and instrumentation are what's most important to me.

I'm a young person that appreciates the music, and the length of the songs of New Order without complaining that it's too long. Not all younger fans are like that. (Then again, I've been a fan for almost 8 years by now.)

True, the lyrics don't bother me when there is a good melody and of course the vocals help,
but when the tune is weak then it can lead one to notice the dodgy lyrics all the more
eg. Slow Jam..

Yes to both points I say. I think the I instrumentation and production is sublime on his track. I like the additional acoustic guitar track that comes in on the fourh chord. It reminds a bit of time will tell which to me is like Barney writing a GM song.

Do you still keep track of GIAUE's position on the Billboard dance chart?Smile

Do you hear from our old friend Jonathan Swyjkos at all these days?

Thanks for the welcome, although the current batch of user names make it a little hard to know who's who these days. Confused

While the reference to GIAUE makes sense, I am having a harder time with the other one. Eek

Yes, I think it's clear that the one thing the seven new tracks all have in common, and the reason they didn't make it onto WFTSC, is that they don't fit into the Odyssey theme.

Recoil is my current favourite. A real slow burner that one.
Bit surprised a few had never heard that mix of I Told You So. I know It was originally only available on that 12" x12" set but it's been on YouTube etc for years.

I think the Lost Sirens mix of ITYS is slightly different to the 12x12" mix, I noticed a few differences in extra guitar lines and Hooky bass after the first chorus which wasn't on the 12x12" mix, but admittedly it's not one of my frequently listened to tracks...

Yes I believe you're right. Presumably that's why the LS mix is referred to as the Crazy World mix rather than the Stuart Price Mix. Although I was initially disappointed that the LS version is slightly shorter, i think it actually packs more punch than the original Stuart Price mix and it ends on more of a 'high'.

still waiting for it (the lost sirens call, ha ha)..

here in the US, amazon delayed it..

i've heard it many many times already, through
the digital version though..

some of the tracks feel a little rushed,
with the lyrics not quite finished, like actual demos.

the music seems pretty complete, although the
tracks don't seem as dense or complicated with a
few exceptions..

probably won't be listening it to much compared
to the 'classic' official albums they've released.

still is nice to hear what some of the tracks might
have become though..

Do what I did - cancel the Amazon order proper, then order it new from one of their sellers. I got my copy in 3 days, and it was $5 cheaper:
