Almost like a repeating diagonal saw tooth pattern throughout the track.

I'm assuming that this is present on all the new pressings, but in theory should be on all the previous vinyl pressings too if it's down to the nature of the audio?

Hopefully you can see what I mean in the picture

Yes, can see what you mean and can see it on my copy. Can also see it on the 2015 remaster ( was it 2015? ) but no, i can't see it on my old 80s original.

Oh btw, anyone struggling to slip the Obi band back on, i found it seems easier if you slip it on from the bottom end. Dunno why but yeah. Seems to work better for me.

Compare and contrast:

From the Dig/Peter Saville link I posted on the previous page:

Quote:
Elegia

The instrumental cut Elegia was originally worked up for the soundtrack to a film i-D magazine intended to commission but which never got off the ground. Nonetheless, the track – which was inspired by Ennio Morricone’s score for the duel scene in Sergio Leone’s classic western For A Few Dollars More – had a haunting grace which affects the listener even without a visual counterpart.

From The Quietus review:

Quote:
there is the definitive, IC-memorialising 17-minute version of ‘Elegia'. It’s utterly superb and on it you can really hear their daily routine of coming in from a club and watching a film together bleeding into the music most clearly, not just with the obvious touchpoint of Ennio Morricone’s Once Upon A Time In The West soundtrack but, whether intentional or not, because it really sounds they are scoring some as yet unseen Dario Argento movie.

So were they (A) scoring a movie commissioned by i-D magazine or were they (B) memorialising Ian Curtis, and happening to sound like they were scoring an unseen movie? I suppose you could say both A & B. Sorta.

But I'm going for (A).

I made my own Analog Loyalist special vocal mix of Let’s Go, using a hi-res download of the box version. I used wizardry to hijack the vocal from the best copy of the vocal “demo” (I think we can safely call it an outtake instead), restored some of the ambiance spleeter-type extractions remove to the naked vocal, and mixed it in. I love it. Trying to straight overlay the vocal on top of the Definitive version doesn’t quite work as the Def version has about 15-16 seconds more audio between verses 2 and 3, so I needed to align the last verse separately. Also, I made sure to EQ-match the “demo” to the Definitive version before doing anything else.

Thoughts?

As hoped - Drew has done a way better job than I did! Great work mate.

Doing the EQ match and spending a bit of time cleaning up the artefacts from the extracted vocal track was well worth the effort

Question for Johnny James. Any news on when we can expect the Low-Life 12" tracks to appear on streaming and download stores?

Hi Hi altogether!

The bundle (the whole thing, incl. t-shirt) arrived today here in New Zealand.

It was surprisingly delivered very fast and packed very well.

The content is in a perfect condition, as I was hoping.

@drew: Well done for these versions of the songs!

I just remembered, how long ago was it, when I did "Run 2"? Half an eternity for sure!

cheers, chronovisor.

I keep finding more things of note about this great boxset. In the book, although they have a nice picture of the linen box cassette, they don't reproduce any of the "alternate cover photo" postcards that were included.
A shame as it was another excellent variation on the rice paper sleeve design

Delighted I am that this Low-Life box has finally been released. Seriously didn't think I'd see it. Almost certainly won't make it to Brotherhood. I'd heard it was due last October but got pushed back for one reason or another, but at last it's finally here. I must say that on the whole it's really decent but of course there's one or two niggly ommisions that could've nudged it a little closer to perfect. Why no original version of Let's Go? The track was completed and included on the original running order for the album, but was bumped fairly late in the day for two reasons. Firstly, the band (mainly Hooky I understand) were not completely satisfied that it fitted in properly, and secondly the American label wanted TPK on the album, so it was hastily remixed into the album version and then butchered again for a 7" version. I do see that a couple of tech wizards on this forum have dropped the original vocal into the instrumental from the extras disc, and a top job they done too. Now we can finally call off the dogs in the search for that one. Brilliant job guys, thank you so much. I remember at the time the feeling was that it might be a single in the transition period to the next album, which obviously turned out to be Brotherhood........., but alas not! My only other niggle is the lack of HD digital downloads of the singles, particularly TPK. Hopefully they'll materialise soon. Fingers crossed. The new vinyl sounds tremendous, the best i've ever heard it on vinyl, and I still have the first pressing in tip top nick. I even think the HD digital files sound pretty amazing too. All round, really pleased.

Now, if there's any young fettlers out there just started collecting, I now have the original Low-life and TPK (with black insert) going a begging. Both in top condition.

I also have roughly 300 gigs from the 80's, all digitized from tape into flac files. Many many soundboard recordings amongst them. The folder is about 130GB. Anybody who wants them can send me a usb stick and i'll gladly pass them on. I'm sure there's at least one live version of Let's Go with lyrics, but I may be confusing that with one of the demo's. Have at least 3 really good versions of the original Let's Go amongst them too.

....... and finally, how do you attach a file to a post please. I have an interview from February 1985 in which Hooky mentions the Let's Go situation. That file is 6 or 7mb, so could be emailed if need be.

Hmmm. I'd certainly be interested in hearing the interview.
Is it audio only or from TV?
The only interview I know of from Feb '85 is one for Radio Clyde with Sumner and Hook which was recorded during the Barrowlands gig soundcheck.

I'm not sure if you can attach a file, but you could easily share it using https://wetransfer.com.
Just click 'I just want to send files', upload it and make sure you select the 'get transfer link' option rather than the 'email transfer' option.

Links are good for a week or so.

Yes, it's the Radio Clyde one. Created an account with the wetransfer thing, still awaiting an email to confirm my email before I can send anything. Last time I done this to share the Blue Monday and Love Will Tear Us Apart multi tracks I had my account closed down and threats of legal action from the record company. Eek

Don't suppose there's any word on when the singles will be available to download? I'll probably end up doing a rip from the vinyl, 'cos I've no patience.

Tell that to page 197 of Hooky's NO book (and his instagram lockdown chats, I forget whch one). [Yes I know Hooky isn't especially reliable].

Speaking of Elegia, this is uploaded just now to YT.

Can anyone advise on Low-life (German Rough Trade) LP. I've been told it "sounds better" than the original UK?

Also, over the course of 2 nights in Feb 85 I heard the whole of Low-life live. 7 LL songs one night plus Let's Go instrumental then opened with Elegia the next night plus TPK and one or two from LL. Good times.

Sounds excellent.
I’m a bit jealous, having first seen them a lot later (Reading 1993). That was a fantastic gig, but would’ve loved to have seen them in their heyday.

I have a couple of friends who saw them as early as 1980/1981 and one of those even saw JD at The Factory.

That’s the equivalent of seeing The Beatles at The Cavern to me.
