I've always thought that was a very underrated song. It's one of my favorites on the album.

I've just been listening to WFTSC and I feel much the same about 'Guilt Is A Useless Emotion'. Such a great pop song!

From what I understand ...

"Big Chord" = "Ruined in a Day"

"Techno One" = "World"

"Chemical" = "Special" (!)

I don't know that content for "Here Are the Old Men" was ever decided, but that title needs to be used! (Although first we need an official DVD/BluRay release of "Here Are the Young Men.")

This is certainly possible, as this has happened once or twice before (swapping of titles between songs).
'Incubation' / 'A Means To An End' springs to mind as one that apparently swapped names at some point.

Oh, and wasn't 'Primitive Notion' once called 'Run Wild'?

Two working titles from WFTSC/Lost Sirens were 'Scott Walker' and 'Madonna'. I can't remember which tracks they were though, which one has a Scott Walker sample? I think Madonna might have been Hellbent.

Ruined is Big Chord, that's a tick at the end not a J.

Edit: There are a few duplications, you've also got it listed lower down. A few of those Republic demos are ideas that were never used, they don't align to finished tracks at all.

MT One is definitely what eventually turned into MTO, and it'll be because of the Roland MT32, which was used extensively on Technique.

Thanks for all these, Johnny.
Do any of the others for 'Republic' line up with actual finished tracks?

According to this page, 'Recoil' samples from 'The Seventh Seal' by Scott Walker.

Hey mate, my post was pure speculation, except Ick, which I read on Denis' site. I wouldn't put it out as true, in particular, ahem, Gillian's G String.
Yeah, I remember 'Madonna', but not which one - maybe Hellbent. Hooky used the name Aleph (STYT) in an interview about bringing back old tracks for the Sirens tour.
There was also Atmosphere / Chance and Decades / Cross of Iron. Guts might've been an advance on one of their first songs, Gutz for Garterz. Revenge and Monaco went through a few title changes too:

The first Electronic bout started with early titles too: Donald (named after the drummer), Wah-Wah (Reality), Big House (Gangster or Idiot Cunty). And New One, but that doesn't really count.

No, Jcp7. Madonna is misogynistic, soft porn bullshit that puts the feminist movement back 8632 years and was instrumental in creating the ridiculous and ultimately dangerous myth that a woman who degrades her body is not a victim or a prostitute but a new form of self-empowerment. Not Sugarcane.

Please Johnny, help ensure these demos are on one of the Republic box set bonus discs, instead of more of the same recycled mixes that are already on compilations, Retro, Rest Of, the original CD single releases, etc.! =)

Yeah, the ones that were performed in LA in 1990 with different titles were:

Gangster (Big House)
Reality (Sun)
Tighten Up (Donald)
Soviet (Cinematic)

Just reading the rerelease liner notes and Johnny also mentions 'Tuesday' and 'Bells' (cos it had Bells on it').

Hmmm. Didn't know this. Ta for info.

'Bells' could be 'Some Distant Memory' at a guess. I absolutely LOVE that track. Gorgeous.

I thought the same.
I wasn't gonna buy the 'Lec double pack when I spotted it at the
store but I'm chuffed I finally did. So great to revisit THAT album and some mixes and Bsides I haven't spun for decades. I LOVED the first Electronic bout.

Yep! The first Electronic LP has a special place in my heart.
Reminds me of good times.

I think it's probably a little dated in parts, but I don't care. It's still great.

The only track I never really liked at the time was 'Feel Every Beat', but it's grown on me over the years.

Also, those B-Sides were just great; Lucky Bag, Free Will, Second To None, Lean To The Inside.

I wonder what that 'Tuesday' track was. The only songs unaccounted for were the aforementioned b-sides. Might've been one of them.

Fuck knows. I'd imagine the title refers to its recording rather than the actual content. If you're right, it could be Free Will cos they played that live at Shitty in the Park. There used to be an awesome Electronic fansite FEB but it's disappeared.
Nope, I lurved Feel Every Beat and I'm amazed it barely scraped the Top 40. Getting Away With Shit was always the weakest link for me, and I far prefer the album without it. But I'm not sure Tony Wilson did, cos it lead to Brits buying the non-Factory imports that did include it... And let's be honest, Disappointed is a PSB track.
I wonder if there's a bootleg of the January 91 Hassie debut...

Not as far as I know, but I’d be happy to be proved wrong.

I love Getting Away With It. It’s my favourite track by them.
However, I prefer the LP without it, as I’m used to the standard track listing.

Disappointed was good but, yes, more PSBs than Electronic.
I will say that I thought the TOTP performance of it, with Bernard playing keyboards, was immensely cool.

There was a crazy vinyl reissue that ended the first side on GAWI and started the second on Gangster and then Soviet, which seriously disrupts the rhythm.
Is Bernard really playing keyboards on that TOTP clip? Has fuck all to do with the track. I saw the Wembley gig with Disappointed and if I remember rightly, Chris and Bernard just sort of stood there.
