My quick take.

I think the demos are awesome, and give a look at embryonic versions of the songs.
Never thought we would ever hear alternate or work in progress versions of them.

It's an amazing time capsule to go back to and hear how some of the songs developed,
especially blue monday.

The peel sessions were known, but also a great historical set.

The other instrumentals are a little further along.

Very cool to hear. Wish there were more.
Especially, if there were vocal versions,
as these are all instrumental.

However, despite New Order Store telling me it's dispatched, the shipping status when logged in says "Not Shipped", and order status is "Packing" still - as others have observed on here. So looks like no shiny boxed set for me on release day at all - despite placing the order within minutes of the release being announced. Very disappointing.

For future boxed sets, I'm just going to stick with Amazon, as they'll (a) almost certainly be received on the day of release; and (b) be cheaper than the New Order Store equivalent.

If you do decide to return your NO store copy, if it’s any help, in the receipt you’ll get with the box there is a return adress label that you cut out and affix over the original delivery adress. Interestingly for me the Warner Music address for returns is in Daventry, Northamptonshire which is just 7 miles from where I live. If I needed to return my copy I could just deliver it in person easlier than posting .

Got an email Tuesday from the New Order store that my bundle had shipped, and it was just delivered! 4 days from the UK to San Francisco. The box, the 12" singles, the t-shirt - all beautiful! Listening to the Extras CD now...some of these rehearsal tapes are a revelation. Much more interesting than standard demos!

Got my box set today along with 12”’s and t shirt. Only had chance to listen to all the audio (vinyl cd, 12”)

The extras CD is a very interesting document of the band at the time. Really enjoyed the completely different TLU and as others have said the evolution of BM. The 12” remaster of BM sounds fantastic to my ears. Maybe because my other 12” of this track are so old and overplayed.

Beautiful artefact dome to a very high standard.

The back catalogue of new order has gone from being one of the worst handled (from the bands I like anyway) to one of if not THE best.

Can’t wait to start watching the DVD’s from tomorrow. The set lists at some these gigs is mouth watering.

Reading the book (and recent you tube interviews) with comments from Steve it certainly looks like Leave me alone is going to make a comeback at future gigs. I just hope I am in attendance when it is played.

More exciting than Be A Rebel innit!

If you search New Order Writing Session on YouTube you'll find these. They haven't been grouped into an album by NO's YouTube admins yet but I imagine they will be.
I haven't checked Spotify but I bet they're there too.

Found I can actually fit one( just the one)of the 12” re- mastered singles in the box without it effecting the lid fit. I chose to put the Blue Monday 12” in as it’s the defining single . Still a snug fit for the box lid.

Have also done similar with the Movement box and chose to put the green sleeve Ceremony 2019 re-master 12” in that box.

Kind of makes the boxes even more definitive Smile

Just watched the Kilkenny set while eating dinner. What a wonderful, cramped, chaotic gig. The synth goes out of tune, Barney is making up lyrics, and the crowd are practically on top of the band. But he's also in a great mood and the songs sound spectacular. To think they were up against bands like Kajagoogoo and Culture Club who played the pop game and sound incredibly dated now. I love this band.

Power Corruption And Lies - Extras (CD)

Writing Session Recordings
======================================================
1. Age Of Consent 4:40

instrumental, rough and raw sounding

this version is shorter than the album version,
(by about 36 seconds)

it is a much slower tempo, although the percussion
sounds about the same as the finished version.

the guitar parts match up pretty closely at times,
the keyboard parts are mostly fleshed out, with
similar chords, and notes.

there's some soft acoustic guitar strumming near
the end that is quite different also.

a very majestic song.

2. The Village 3:14

instrumental

shorter than the album version
(by 1min:23sec)

once again, a much more early take on the song.

this one matches the album tempo pretty well,
and follows the same musical verses and chorus
structure.

the intro keyboards and bass sound similar,
but the main keyboard sequence sounds like
a different instrument or different key.

the main guitars are much more prominent.
you can hear a lot of individual acoustic
strumming, along with a very prevalent
bass throughout it.

a very happy, uplifting, and upbeat song.

3. 5 8 6 3:24

(shorter by 4min:08sec)
instrumental

a very electro version, completely different
from the album version.

does not have the slow build up or phasing
starts. drums are completely different.
(not a computer)

lots of interesting keyboard solo's throughout
the song. interesting bass sound keyboard parts too.

the major chords, and bass lines are similar though.
they cymbal hits are very prominent also.

maintains the marching beat throughout.
fades out at end.

dark and sinistar sounding.

4. Your Silent Face 5:02

(shorter by 55sec)
instrumental

this one sounds very similar to the album,
same tempo and tone. much less dynamics
on the instruments. less reverb, and
polish on them.

the guitar parts match up pretty well with
the album. a lot more strumming from the
main guitar parts.

a lot less synths, and of course less
emphasis on the soaring string sounds.
the drums sound more prominent though.
a lot less of the melodica sounds in it.

a rather mellow, laid back song.

5. Ecstasy 4:24

instrumental

no vocoder in this version. this matches
the album rather closely again as far as
instruments go.

its got a lot deeper guitar sound part in it though,
or its a lot less processed than the final version.
the drums seem to match the tempo and beat also.

the main emphasis seems to be be on leaving the
individual parts to be polished later on, with
the glossy vocoder parts, and keyboards mixed in.

this version has a rather long melodica sounding
(most likely keyboard) segment near the end.
at which point it deviates from the structure
of the original with more guitar improvisation.

another interesting original instrumental,
and very experimental sounding.

6. Leave Me Alone 4:09

(shorter by 33sec)
instrumental

very similar to the album version.
matches the tempo and BPM of the original.
similar key and instruments also.

you can hear all the guitar parts much
more prominently. the drums are very
similar too, along with the bass highlights.

this sounds like they were near the end of
recording it, as you can just overlay the
vocals on it, and do some more cleanup on
the mixing to finalize it.

a very plaintative, and midtempo rocker.

John Peel Session [previously released]
==========================================
7. Turn The Heater On 5:02

a rather reggae sounding track, quite different
in tone and tempo from their normal songs. since
its a cover.

bernard stretches his vocals to the higher range.
this is a rather fast paced song, with similar
drums, melodica, and synths that were used on
the album.

and interesting choice to play for the peel sessions.
no other studio version exists.

8. We All Stand 5:24

there is no 'radio session' version of this,
so this early take on it, is what they were
working on.

it's a rather bluesy, jazzy sounding song.
slow in tempo, with lots of space for the
guitars, piano, and basic drums to fill out.

bernards lyrics stick out from it, with
some interesting stereo effects of different
lyrics from each channel. there's almost a
hypnotic lull going on with the jams, and
piano parts.

definitely a downbeat track, with some urgent
lyrics and vocals from bernard at the end.

9. Too Late 3:37

another non-album track, a short and very
simple slow electro sounding take.

it then delves into some major keyboard chords,
with the trademark bass over it.

this might be basically, another early version
of what the album 586 was, but with completely
different lyrics over it. very intense, but
unfortunately very short.

would have liked to heard more of it.

10. 5 8 6 6:08

586 was not an actual single, unless you
count video 586, which sounded completely
different.

this version is about as close to a remix
of the album version that you will get.

completely revamping the sound, and infusing
kraftwerkian sounds, it turns out to be a
incredibly different take on what the song
would become.

lots of different effects, cool breaks,
and various synth solos all come into
play at points.

all the elements come together, the drums,
bass, and keyboards all mixing and intertwining
perfectly for yet another take before the
inevitable progress to blue monday would come.

bernards vocals are perfect to match the
dark tone, and you can even hear some of
the back up vocals behind him at times.

definitely one of the outstanding tracks from
the peel sessions. an amazing highlight at
the time.
==========================================

John Peel Session Outtake

11. Too Late (instrumental rough mix) 3:41

this early version matches the normal peel version,
but omits the lyrics. so that each of the
instruments stand out during those segments.

other than that, it is basically another take
on the song. the recording is definitely a
little rough on the levels, but its still
decent enough.

New York demo #1

12. Thieves Like Us 6:41

(shorter 17sec, compared to the released instrumental)
instrumental

imagine if you took an electro version
of this song, and removed the choral synths.
thats what it sounds like. arthur baker
had a hand in the song, so you can
see that influence.

there is a total bass lead sound, and very
muted drums, making it sound like they
wanted to get the riffs done first, before
polishing it up completely.

you can hear where the ideas for most of the
latter finished version originated from.
the main synth chords were developing, but
sound low-key here.

the rough raw guitar parts in the later version
found here, but in a much reduced composition.

there's a lot more improvisation going on near
the end also.

its sounds pretty clear and clean also.

interesting take showing what a different
direction that song took at the early
stages of its development.

Writing Session Recordings

13. Thieves Like Us 1:59

instrumental

this is a very short experimental take on the song.

there are definitely the same keyboard chords,
and the electro sound part going on. so it
also used the raw guitar stabs too.

the keyboard parts sound completely different,
and they would be toned down later on.

extremely short, but you can really hear how
early the song was coming along, and the next
take would get much further along.

14. Murder 3:40

(shorter 17sec)
instrumental

this is a rough sounding song, but the original
was too. there's less samples, but just as much
guitar works, and some heavy duty drums going on.

it's hard to hear the bass at times, and there
very little keyboards, except for some chords
at time.

it didn't change much in structure, and stands
out as another totally strange, and interesting
instrumental from them. but the main new order
sound and influence is there.

Instrumental
======================================================
15. Blue Monday 2:10
[not on youtube yet]

instrumental
very short, totally different sound

imagine taking some of the early versions of
ecstasy, and adding some 586 to it.

thats what this sounds like.
not sure when this came out.
but you can hear some of the main
keyboard synth sounds coming through.

the main guitar leads play something that
sound like a main melody, but its not blue monday.

about halfway through, the drumbeat and synths
almost get there, but not quite.

the next version would though.

16. Blue Monday 5:50

(shorter 1min:42sec)
instrumental
starting to see the song emerging, most of the elements
are there, but very different sounding effects, and timing

does not sound like the beach, but several differences
from the original blue monday.

the keyboards are quite different in sound, and texture.
the structure of the song is also different.

the bass keyboard sounds are modified, as are
the main leads.

the tempo is close, although could be a little faster.

the cymbal hits match up, as do the other effects,
keeping the structure very similar to the final
version.

there are some new main keyboard leads around
the 2min mark, that are quite different [these
echo the main lead vocals].

there are no vocoders at all, and you can hear
several miskeyed synth parts too.

some of the edits are quite rough, and clunky,
like the airplane whoosh, and breakdown.

they had to do quite a lot of work to finalize
the song, but all the elements are basically here.

its quite interesting to hear this take and
see what they added and changed in the
post production, and of course adding the
now classic lyrics, would cement this title
in history.

Album Session Recording

17. Blue Monday (Instrumental Outtake) 7:19

(3sec shorter)
i overlaid this over 'the beach', and they
matched each other pretty well.

so this might have been an earlier take
(or exactly the same), i'm sure there
are some mixing differences.

the vocoder parts sound louder to me.
other than that they are comparible.

there might be a slight BPM difference.

18 video 586 remaster 22:08

instrumental
this is a very very long electro sounding
experiment.

it does not sound like any of the other versions
of 586. it was basically a showpiece for an
installation, with an accompanying video.

(there is a shorter 10 minute bonus version on
the DVD with alternate graphics).

this also was released as a single much later on,
and also came in several parts on different compilations.

good for background music, but without too much
variation or outstanding parts, is another song
that continues in their standard of long
experimental pieces.

It really is a classic gig. So good to finally see something that a lot of fans have been listening to for years.
The band were in a playful mood that night.

I know what you mean about the comparisons with other synth bands back in the day. I hate when people try to class New Order as a ‘New Wave 80s synth pop band’, alongside Tears For Fears, A Flock Of Seagulls, The Human League and the two you mentioned.
They couldn’t be further away.

What's an obi strip? I didn't get any strip around the box anyway. There's the ribbon inside to ease getting the stuff out if that's what you mean.I didn't think the outer came with any stripConfused

I love this band.

The Kilkenny gig is great isn't it.Looked a whole bunch of fun and the band really seem to be enjoying themselves. It looked an absolute riot of a gig.Watched it Thursday evening and then last night i watched the Hacienda 83 gig.Quite a contrast. At Kilkenny the band and the audience are having loads of fun but at the Hac 83 gig it all seems a bit static and Barney seems like he's got ants in his pants and keeps faffing and fiddling with buttons and stuff on the stack by Gillian's keyboard. He seems unhappy with the sound at many parts of the gig.I guess it was a hot summer night and he repeatedly asks the audience to move back. Not much between song banter. They seemed to respond much better to the Irish crowd at the Kilkenny gig than the ones at the Hacienda 83 gig.

Are you based in mainland Europe or the US?

I'm guessing that that strip is a way of putting the '15' age restriction on the box in territories that demand it.

Still, it's a nice addition.

PS I didn't get one with my set, which was ordered from the New Order Store.

☝️ That 15 rating is a UK-only rating AFAIK.
Speaking of which, Gillian retweeted this last night:

Yodel delivered my New Order Store version of the set at lunchtime today (Sat 3rd). I originally assumed the 'True Faith' badges I also ordered were missing, but found them inside a labelope stuck to the outside cardboard packaging - had assumed it was the shipping documents! No sign of the Amazon version yet (3-4 October estimate now). So I guess I'll return the Amazon version as soon as I get it - even though it's now over £20 cheaper than the New Order Store version. Not so worried about the price difference now - just glad to have a copy!

I note that the iTunes version of this set (basically digital downloads of CDs 1 and 2) comes with a "2020 Remaster" of the full 22 min 'Video 586' that's not including in the physical set.
