Really digging this. It somehow manages to be both dated and timeless at the same time.
I do hope this is the start of a new album campaign.

All looks great. Not sure I'll go for the 12" (*), but would definitely snaffle up a CD single. * May be subject to change.

OK - I've listened about 5-6 times now, and must say that I really do like it a lot now. Great stuff!
There probably isn't anything really outstanding about it, but it's just a bloody nice pop song.
I really like Bernard's vocal delivery, which sounds bright and breezy. Some of his recent vocal lines have been deeper (probably to better manage his voice as he has gotten older) but, with this song, he seems to have reverted back closer to his usual register.
Will continue to listen for the rest of the day, on and off.
Man, little beauties like this make me yearn for another LP. C'mon, BSGP&T. Make it so!

Ah, could listen to the final keyboard sequence there for quite a lot longer.
Wonder if that's Gillian doing the backing vocals on the chorus?

Wonder if that's Gillian doing the backing vocals on the chorus? I thought that too, initially. I believe it's actually Barney's falsetto.

Does anyone know why it is not available to purchase in America in any digital platform iTunes or Amazon digital. It is a copyright issue or something. I can’t find it anywhere here to buy it digitally. |

Yep, agreed. Not outstanding (yet) but a really nice, breezy tune. Yeah, Bernard has gone back a bit to that plaintive and appealing vocal style of old a bit , i think with this one.

Yeah, I thought that too - but begs the question "who produced the single version(s) that are up on the platforms today"? If I have one complaint it's that intro - sounds so weak, like someone just suddenly remembered to push the faders up. If they'd done a big drop there it would've sounded great

Comments from Steve in the NME suggest this may not simply be a cast off from MC as some have dismissed it as, but possibly part of a larger project: Speaking to NME about the track, drummer Stephen Morris said: “It’s kind of carrying on from ‘Music Complete’. It’s a very dance-y song.” He continued: “It’s been a bit strange making a record via remote control, with the song getting batted about backwards and forwards, but hopefully it’s turned out alright! “It’s just a one-off at the minute. We thought we’d start with one and then see how it goes.Edited by user 08 September 2020 06:56:43(UTC)

I'm not sure of 'producer', per se, but Bernard had mentioned in a streamed interview that he was 'doing a remix of his own mix' or similar. This made me think that it might have been made without a separate producer, and the band handled most of these chores. This makes a certain amount of sense, especially if a lot of the work was done during lockdown, as it might've been more complicated to involve a separate producer. Not impossible, I know, but I'm guessing that the band would rather not just 'hand over the reigns' to someone else without one of them, at least, being present 'in the room'. I'm excited by this, and like it more with each listen. But (and not trolling here) really could have used some bass lines beyond the programmed

Still early days but I do like it. The vocal melody is pretty solid and the overall upbeat disposition of the track is pretty infectious. It is clearly not intended to be a gritty Crystal or Singularity type number. Not sure about the "Rebel/Devil" chorus but we're clearly getting one of Bernard's latest state of the nation - no, not that one - refrains.
The mix is quite busy with loads going on. The percussion and drumming is very lively with programmed shakers and bass drums getting going halfway through. The guitar(s) seem a bit absent or low in the mix plus as has been mentioned the solo near the start is very "Academic". One of the keyboard (?) lines at the end could easily have been a high-fretboard bass riff of old... but for whatever reason wasn't recorded as such. As I think Fotz mentioned it seems to end just before it's all coming together and really getting going. An extended mix could fix that.
Any bass guitar of any description? Struggling to hear anything. There is some nice sequenced bass towards the end.
I think fans who enjoyed Electronic and New Order's poppier moments will love it. The Joy Division/Hooky fans less so but then you can't please everyone nor should you try to.
They could really flesh things out and give each element their own space in a 6 minute version. Every other track on Music Complete got the extended mix treatment so why should "Be A Rebel" be left out?
Looking forward to the remixes. I really hope they're out digitally before November as otherwise that is a 2 month wait.
