Watched this again earlier for first time in a few years.

There's something about i don't like that i still can't quite explain. I dunno, i like it but but don't like it at the same time, if that's possible!

Barney's character - i can see some of Bernard in him but he's just.. i dunno he just doesn't have.. a menace maybe that Barney seem to exude (from the photos) in that JD era.Similar with Hooky's character. Steve Morris' character is possibly the least accurate out of all of them.Sam Riley is too conventionally cool and good looking to really capture Curtis. Rob Gretton should have been played by Paddy Considine and as for Tony Wilson's character, awful.For all the 1980 period sets it just seems too sterile somehow.
I dunno , i guess it must be really fucking hard to get actors anywhere near close to the real people they are portraying in any music biopic to be fair.

But on a positive i was much more impressed this time around watching the gig scenes where the actors actually perform the JD songs, Leaders Of Men and Candidate in particular. Some scenes i can forget about my problem with the film and just go with it like when Ian is alone with Annik and she says "Ian, you're so depressing" lol that did raise a smile.


Atmosphere playing at the end seems just too obvious somehow but i guess it was the only song the film was ever gonna end on :shrug:

Towards the end i was struck how effective New Order's "Get Out" composition for the film was in that scene where Curtis goes into a fit.

I guess my impression of Joy Division, views, image and feelings about them go back such a long way and are so set in stone that i was always going to struggle with the accuracy of a film portrayal of them.

Grant Gee's JD documentary is way better than Control, really compulsive viewing, that film.

Anyway, rant over. As you were.

I wasnt there and I dont personally know the people portrayed so I cant really comment on accuracy but I really like it. It was pretty much what I expected from Anton Corbajingle-bells - has the guy ever shot anything in colour? It was cool and respectful whilst not flinching from making me feel uncomfortable watching Ians fits. To me, that made me feel like I was intruding in someone elses misery. Powerful stuff.

And Rob Gretton was funny as fuck.

Yeah maybe i was harsh in my demand for the four band members to be closer to the real life people they are portraying. Take the film for what it is. Samantha Morton does very well playing Debbie. You can't help but feel for her, left at home looking after the baby while Ian gets closer and closer to the exotic, beautiful and interesting Annik. Morton doesn't have to say much in many scenes, you just get what she's going through without her having to say anything. You do get enveloped with the downward spiral Riley as Curtis is heading down. Really stuck with me for a good while did the film after the first few times i watched it in 2007.

Also think all of New Order's new compositions for the film are actually really good, as said before Get Out especially, the piano, synths and Steve's drumming really bring that scene to a climax

Never seen Dead Man's Shoes. Watched a film a while back with Paddy Considine in called Cry Of The Owl , it was fucking awful!

Ha, he was a drug dealer in that Harry Brown film starring Michael Caine. Think Harris' character died in that one if i remember right

Not a film I'd want to revisit in a hurry, it's a bit dark. A lot dark, in fact.

Apparently Harris is a proper old-skool 'method' actor, so when he played a racist in Outlaw he refused to socialise or even sit with any black crew members off camera!

i'm desperately excited about this - dead man's shoes live rescored screening. it is horrible in places, but also hilarious in places. by the time i first saw it so many people had said EXACTLY that ("brilliant...a lot dark") that it wasn't actually as disturbing as i was expecting. and if memory serves, it has a sort of fairytaley/fabley quality that kind of distances the viewer. by the end, there was so much cliched religious imagery going on it felt really unreal.

or maybe the idea of vicious, bloody revenge just really appeals to me. Wink

it is indeed. also, attack the block at 9pm, and then they've got loads of good stuff on in the next week or so, inc tyrannosaur, weekend, kill list, don't look now, and submarine (which is BRILLIANT).

Yeah did see that Attack The Block is on. Haven't seen that one but will record it. Have seen Tyrannosaur and Submarine fairly recently. Not so Weekend ( don't know anything about that one) and Kill List ( heard it's pretty grim but good). Can't remember if i've ever seen Don't Look Now, prob not so will check it out

I'm not entirely sure but i'm sure i heard "that's well next" earlier. I'd just got familiar with "well dark" and "well sick" etc "well next" is the latest variation?

Not watching Dead Man's Shoes right now , watching Jools. Recording it to watch tomorrow.

"Attack the Block" was surprisingly good. The aliens were absolutely brilliant.

"Kill List" is a horrendous film. Not sure whether I liked it or not. A bit unnecessarily nasty in places, especially towards the end, but clever nevertheless. Reminded me of when I first watched "Eden Lake" - it got to the end and I just felt utterly drained by it. Very, very dark.

Caught up on some of these at the weekend. Attack The Block was alright but didn't do an awful lot for me, a bit meh for me i'm afraid. Dead Man's Shoes was good but not as good as i'd thought it'd be somehow, not sure why. Kill List was probably the best of the lot for me. Yeah kind of agree with the Eden Lake comparison, left me feeling similar to when i watched that. Wasn't expecting the PLOT SPOILER ALERT twist into the occult/ sacrificial ritual stuff! Didn't see that one coming, thought it'd just be a straightforward hitmen killing people affair. Reminded me a bit of Eyes Wide Shut the way it suddenly went into the dark occult stuff out of the blue. Kind of guessed it was his son he was unknowingly stabbing to death before it was revealed
