Includes the full story of JD & NO. Might be of interest to Michael Monkhouse who might not be aware of the history.

HaHa.
Yeah, I seem to think he was sketchy on how the band rose from the ashes of seminal Post-Punk group Joy Division.Big Grin

My wife picked up a copy of the magazine for me from WH Smith. Think it was £8.99.
Only had a quick glance through, but it looks quite nice. Typical Uncut fair. Old articles and interviews, classic pictures etc. Nothing particularly new but, still, nicely presented. Nice to have it all together in one glossy publication.

There was one double-spread picture from circa 1987 that I’d never seen before. Barney laughing. Hooky looking cool. Gillian lovely as ever.

They also rate the album tracks and there are some absolute howlers. I’m not next to the mag at present but two that spring to mind are ‘Vicious Streak’ which was rated 1 out of 5 and ‘Special’ 2 out of 5. Now I’m not the biggest ‘VS’ fan, but it’s hardly 1/5 material (think they rate RTS as 3/5!!).
And giving ‘Special’ only a two star rating? That’s just absurd.

Just shows that it’s pointless only giving star ratings without any explanation. Much better is the way Dennis has been doing it, with detailed breakdowns and opinions adding weight to ratings.
There’s no way of telling with the magazine whether each LP was reviewed by the same person or not which only adds to the confusion.

Every day is an adventure.
14 quid sounds a lot but when I think of all the mags I bought in 1993 for just the one article apiss... But no, I can't be arsed with yet another history lesson. Or another totally subjective rating system.

Actually - each album review credits the author in the title. I'll grant you it's not immediately noticeable and not in the spot you'd normally expect (at the end of the review) David Quantick does a couple of them, so it's not like they chose people who know nothing about the band

Ah that’s the one, I knew something like this had been done before and I have a copy. Though god knows where it is, it was last seen under a bed some years ago. Wasn’t there a Record Collector magazine version of this kind of thing also just last year?

Yeah, we probably don't need another retrospective look at the band.
However, that magazine was released back in 2012 (where do the years go?), so I guess, there are probably new fans wanting this sort of stuff. And for us old-timers, there's at least a few new articles / photos.

Ah - Yeah. I see what you mean now. Hadn't got around to really going through the magazine yet, so kind of didn't notice that the LPs were reviewed in the main body of writing. Just thought the articles headed 'Movement', 'Low Life' etc. were part of a chronology, i.e. telling the story of that particular time period etc.
Thought that the only reviews as such were those 'track scores'.

That's exactly where my copy is! My bed, I mean. Not yours. That'd be weird! Big Grin

Speaking of magazines, anyone else surprised / annoyed that 'New Order' have never been cover stars of 'Q' magazine?
Incredible really, given that magazines' 30+ year history, to never feature such a prominent band.

(I think I'm right with that fact. They were featured in a smaller photo on the cover back in '93 or so, but Bowie was the cover star.).

I don't know why this bothers me. It just does. I mean, bands like Elbow and Supergrass got covers, but no New Order...

^ Weren’t they on the cover of Q in the very early days of the mag about 1986? Can’t recall now but doesn’t that 80s photo of them sitting round the kitchen table come from a big Q feature in about 86? Memory vague on that.

Though they have won a Q award (or two?) .

Hmmm. I remember that photo session, but not sure which magazine I've seen it in. It may have been Q.
Can't find a cover though.

Finally got a digital copy of this.

Excellent job, very good considering they were able to cover all the albums, side-projects, and
a lot of other interesting material in there.

Recommended for fans of the band, that want something a little more current.
