Thought the opening ceremony was fantastic. Only negatives for me were Arctic Monkeys and Paul McCartney. Couln't see the point of having the Arctic Monkeys there at all and the show should have finished with that amazing lighting of the cauldron , not Paul f*****g McCartney. He was a massive, annoying anti climax after the cauldron part.

Well, Sir Paul is kind of a no-brainer. He's a living monument.

Granted he hasn't done anything good in years, but he's still one of the frontmen of the biggest band of all time.

What is he on about? Eek

I didn't see the point of the Arctic Monkeys being there either by the way although the lead singer seemed to be trying to conjure up the image of Lennon in his pre mop-top days..

I actuallythought the artic monkeys were energetic and flawless. You wouldn't have wanted coldplay now would u? Mcartney was pointless (and out of time) but I guess he's got the world wide appeal.

I thought the opening ceremony was brilliant and Danny Boyle deserves a lot of credit for his vision and execution.

bang on. he's a bloody BEATLE.

and while i'm no big fan of t'arctic monkeys, i've hardly met a young person who isn't. they seem to be one of the few modern guitar bands that manage to be both popular and cool. most of us on this site are frankly too OLD to really know what's what with ver kids. Wink

we get our go with the hyde park gig, innit.

oh, and opening ceremony overall? best thing i've seen on the telly ever.

Well , I just don't subscribe to this McCartney is god just because he was in the biggest band in the world. Beatles were great, granted but it seems to be a crime not to worship McCartney these days. So fricking charge me.

Anyway enough of the negatives . Loved the ceremony . Industrial Revolution part,Mr Bean, NHS part, the British Saturday night part ( that girl has dropped her phone segment ) the girl was brilliant- and very, very pretty. Thought the segment with Emile Sande singing Abide With Me was really good and the couldron lighting with the Underworld track just topped it all off . Arise Sir Danny Boyle.

edit also loved the Underworld track to the Industrial Revolution , the snippet of the Stones ' Satisfaction ' that guitar riff never sounded so good and really liked that David Holmes (?) track when Beckham was on the speedboat

there were just so many little brilliant touches. the TARDIS sound effect. doreen lawrence carrying the flag. each country contributing their own petal to the cauldron - which they can take home with them after, like a posh party bag. the brookie kiss which in that moment became the first lesbian kiss to be shown on telly in so many countries.

s'wonderful.

i actually think it seems to be hugely, deeply unfashionable to admit to a fondness for sir paul, and i think it's been that way for a while.

An interesting rumour regarding the CLOSING Ceremony emerged today when Ed Sheeran claimed that he was going to perform with Pink Floyd,
however "The Floyd" have issued a statement to the NME Denying that such a duet will take place, I am therefore assuming that he will be performing with either Gilmour or Waters but not both together...Skeptic
