Pleased that the Chems have finally uploaded the extended mix of Skipping Like A Stone to YouTube.
This version is less cluttered than the 'normal' version, andt there's a really good song in there. It just takes several listens to get your head around it.

So yes, for the second time I am posting the biggest "grower" on the new Chems album. With even more Uranium/BM vibes than before.

The Chemical Brothers - Skipping Like A Stone (Extended Mix)

They've also now made a great video for the 'normal' version:

^ Not feelng that new Chems massively :-/. The video was pretty good though. Reminds me my late father was a master at skipping stones across water.

The new album is out, right? I was in Manchester the weekend and had a look in Piccadilly Records. They had like a big canvas print of the album cover hanging on the wall. Saw a big billboard display also near city centre advertising upcoming (October?) gig at i think Manchester Arena.

Was in Manchester to attend Spiritualized at New Century Hall on Saturday night. Pretty good gig but sound was awful the first 3 or 4 songs but i guess i got drunk and things got a lot better. Gig was packed out , sold out i think. 800 capacity venue that underwent a refurb and reopening last year. Fairly near city centre.

My mate Mark Reeder's got a new (old) track out, refitted from his Shark Vegas days. See his Bandcamp page.

It's very good IMHO - show him some love.

Woah! , i remember this clip, this was 2013, 10 years ago now? That bends my brain.Though of course a lot has happened in the last 10 years, the world has gone to complete shit.Brexit, Trump, Johnson,Covid, climate catastrophe becoming ever more clearer, Russia invading Ukraine, cost of living crisis, Hamas v Israel.. so it's easy to forget what we were doing in 2013.

Greta Gerwig is just great in this. Still think there's a Temptation influence in the music

The YouTube Algorithm decided I might like this old club/rave footage. There's a whole YT playlist of these "90's Ecstasy Clubland" vids, which are kinda fun to watch. N-Joi are probably best known for their hit Anthem, but some of their other stuff was overlooked more than it should have been, IMHO. Like the track in this video: Mindflux. [Looks like you have to 'Watch on YouTube' which makes my post look a bit crap!]

A slightly better quality upload of the audio can be found here:

I can only guess that Tundra was such a fan of the song that he felt the only to get it out of his system was to record his own version.
Does he improve on the original? Nope. Other than perhaps scratching his own personal "itch", I'm not sure he achieves much here. Although it does remind us that Kate did her own song perfectly well, thank you. It's not like Bob Dylan where he's got a crap voice and then other people come along and make his song sound better.
Kate's original always reminds me of the soppy Kevin Bacon film She's Having A Baby. It wasn't a particularly good film but the song kinda stood out as a highlight.

Yes perhaps there is a similar electronic wig-out style that both tracks have in common. FLIAD seems to get the crowd bouncing, as I discovered when I last saw the Chems at a London park Festival in 2022. If you indeed decided to go see them in Birmingham, then that would literally be right now, as I type.
I've been looking for some cheap resale tix for the O2 tomorrow on Twickets/Stubhub, but no joy I'm afraid...

From their last properly good album. They certainly never denied the New Order influence. They name checked NO as an influence at The Brit Awards around that time and of course they got Bernard to remix one of their tracks a year or so back (as discussed in the Mella Dee, 'Riptide' thread) but the remix has yet to be released...Frown

^ Yep i went to the Chems tonight. On the train home now. I enjoyed No Reason from the new album. Visuals were great. No Geography at start of encore and then The Darkness That You Fear went down well and then Private Psychedelic Reel and all that mad stained glass window medieval imagery .Think i enjoyed more the last time i saw 'em, at same venue in 2019. That was first time so maybe a lot of it tonight was a bit like watching a repeat at times.

Edit: Oh and the one with Beck on vocal , Wide Open. That was ace. Didn't recognise it at first as they mixed it up and around but it was a cracker tonight

These ones I presume (love em!).

I thnk they've re=worked The Darkness That You Fear for this tour. Kicks a bit more ass I think.

^ I actually went for a seat option this time. Around £42 in total with the fees etc. Yes, standing would have been £60 ish. Seated at what is essentially a rave though, an odd experience .

Yep that vid with the neon marching band for No Reason is wonderful. Yes, Darkness That You Fear was mixed up quite a bit. Really like that live take of Wide Open. Think it's Romola Gareii in the accompanying vid visuals for it they used live.

No Reason samples 90s tune Spastik by Plastikman, doesn't it? Sure sounds like it to me.

James Holroyd played this rather lovely track as last tune of his set pre Chems taking to stage.

I had the same thought when No Reason came out earlier this year. Is it a direct sample or simply a very similar snare sound? I'm not sure, but if it isn't a direct sample, I'm sure it's at least an influence.

The vocals on No Reason are sampled from Courts Or Wars by Second Layer. That track has a sort of miitary snare sound on it, so I guess that may have been the original influence/inspiration and then the Chems decided to make the snare sound more Spastik-y in order to fit with their dance music aesthetic. Or something.

jump to about 1:28 for the vocal sample:

Lead singer Adrian Borland along with Graham Bailey of Second Layer changed their band name and added some members to become The Sound. One of those bands that never quite broke through, but made a LOT of records.
This article compares The Sound to Echo & The Bunnymen, and in particular to Joy Division and points out that Adrian Borland also committed suicide, albeit 19 years after Ian did.
Borland also worked with Kevin Hewick of Haystack 'fame'; just google their two names together. And he apparently wasn't shy of covering JD songs when he played live:

Lots of stuff from Borland under his various band names on Discogs if you feel like going down a rabbit hole, but yeah back to your original comment, I hear where you're coming from.
PS the "Woos" on No Reason are sampled from Janet Jackson (!).

^ Thanks for detailed info. Yeah i can hear that vocal starting at around 1.28. The Chems don't 'arf find and choose some obscure samples and use them to good effect eh?!

Nor sure i'd heard of The Sound until yesterday. Coincidentally, Mark Radcliffe mentioned them when he and Maconie were talking about something else on their show on Saturday morning.

Watching that clip again yes as i mentioned i was at that Birmingham 2019 show ( a voice in the crowd at 1.52 "Yeah man, yeah yeah yeah" actually sounds like my own and the kind of dumb shit i'd say in the height of a gig. ) so must have enjoyed that live version yet on Friday night i didn't recognise it at the start. But yeah, one of those songs that when you experience it live it really is something. Takes you and everyone else in the house up and above , almost transcendent , without wishing to sound gushy . A real high even without the aid of er, something extra. Would be great if they released a live album with it included.

Every time they release a new album i think on first listen oh it's nowhere near as good as their old stuff but after a few more spins i'm loving it. Happened wirh No Geography and now the latest one too.

Looking through the end of year things this Caroline Polacheck is prominent. I'm vaguely aware of her but have never really listened. But someone mentioned this clip. Crikey. Never had the luck of seeing a Powerpoint presentation quite like Caroline's.

Not as boring as The Seahorses or Liam's solo stuff.
Not as interesting as The Stone Roses or Oasis' good bits.
A perfectly acceptable single that won't change the world.

Liam Gallagher & John Squire - Just Another Rainbow (Official Lyric Video)

*EDIT*

Five days after the single's release, they put out a proper video. I have no idea why/how record companies make these decisions...

RIP Annie Nightingale. We were talking about her on here sometime back. I always remember her old Sunday evening show on Radio 1 in the 80s, discovered loads of stuff listening to that show and she was still partying into her later days, still spinning new tunes. A legend.

One tune she often played that always made me smile was Cristina's version of Is That All There Is. Thanks Annie.

We were. Not that long ago. And she still had a Radio 1 show right to the end. She was scheduled to continue in 2024.
Now I know why the most recent episodes of her show on the Sounds app are old ones from 2017 - she became ill.

The first female DJ on Radio 1, the longest serving broadcaster on the station and someone who always seemed down to earth and relatable.

After taping the Top 40 with Tommy Vance in '82/83, I would hear Annie come on at 7pm playing stuff I never heard before. I was a little young to appreciate all those records at the time, not yet being a teenager myself. But even then, she was clearly in it for the music, not the showbiz.

Then she gravitated towards dance music in the '90s, and the first time I ever heard Underworld's Cowgirl (pre-Dubno) was when Annie played the original 12" version on her show.
I also remember her playing the American Spring mix of the Primals' Higher Than The Sun. I had Screamdelica by then but hadn't heard this version before. Annie was setting the pace and I was just trying to keep up. Really sad news. RIP Annie.

^Yes. She was a fantastic broadcaster, really likeable and crikey she knew her stuff. And i can't say for certain 100% but i think she was first to play Thieves Like Us on the radio before its release.

Edit: ah, Annie's Bird On The Wireless documentary on BBC4 now
