He frequently repeats the same anecdotes verbatim so, at first, I thought I'd read this one before: The Lights' audiences are full of youngsters, Gillian didn't contribute to the music, etc.

Later in the interview, however, he seems to go out of his way to praise Bernard. Calling him a genius multiple times. He also speaks of Steve and Gillians' "work" not being used for Republic.

Are the relationships thawing?

Well, I seem to remember the problems with Republic being Stephen Hagues fault (according to Hooky) now it appears Bernard was the one who fucked around with things so who knows?

The rock world has been shaken to its very foundations by Hooky not talking to the press for a billisecond. A spokesperson for Hooky said, 'He is a notoriously private person and once every proverbial blue moon doesn't want to shout his mouth off about how JD would have mutated into New Order anyway, the Light are touring the universe and Gillian is, technically speaking, a cookie runt.' The Stoke-on-Trent Times is now the only newspaper not to have shared these fascinating insights. Get well soon, Hooky!

Yeah, the Rep-is-shite-cos-of-no-Hooky-thanx-to-Stephen-Hague thing is now a commonplace, but there were rumours it was essentially Bernard's baby. Either way it's no masterpiece, bugger.

Agreed. In true NO style Hooky says shitloads and most of it's contradictory, e.g. as I wrote elsewhere, when Republic emerged he said he loved it cos Hague'd kept 'em classic New Order songs!

Do you really like it? I find it incredibly dull, with the exception of (obviously) Regret and Special and maybe Everyone Everywhere. It was the combination of Republic, The Rest Of and Raise The Pressure that got my enthusiasm dwindling.

I like Republic, I think it's a great rainy day album. It has some of Bernard's best lyrics too. If the production wasn't so smooth and it had more Hooky on it it would be Tecnhique Part 2. I do think of it as the come down after the party.

Great interview, it does seem like he's not so bitter about the rest of the band anymore.

I could never understand that insane popularity of the Stone Roses. I guess one had to live in Britain in '88-'89 to get it. But still, years later, whenever they get together, they attract the biggest crowds. Technically, it was all down to one single album. The 1994 LP was hardly a game changer.

I know most people think its a stinker but its just one of those things. I really bought into the glossy image of it all at the time. Savilles glossy artworks, the glossy production, appearing with The Hoff for Top Of The Pops, it was all OTT and the complete antithesis of the gloomy looking Manchester sounds and images from the past. Plus, I think the summer of 1993 was a sunny one and it blended nicely with that too.

Fook, Republic is twenty years old. I feel old now.
