I assume this is incorrect?

"They’ll tour again in 2013 and start work on a new album, their first as a trio (they’re fleshed out by a guitarist and bassist for live shows)."

Or is Phil genuinely not going to be contributing to any future songwriting?

I hope it's incorrect....what does the last part mean? 'They're fleshed out by...' ?????

It essentially means (if the Telegraph is correct - ho, hum!) that the guitarist (Phil) and bassist (Tom) will join them for live shows only (and not contribute to the album) - i.e, the core 3 (Bernard, Steve and Gillian) will be writing the album but joined by the others for live dates...

Unless they mean Gillian?

Cool

I wonder should people read much into the line about Phil and Tom's status in the band considering that the picture over the article didn't even include Stephen!

I couldn't see them demoting Phil now after all this time in the band.

They're at the bottom of that Telegraph article.

Do other bands' fans (e.g. The Cure / Depeche Mode and numerous others) gripe when one (founder) member leaves and the others carry on under the same name? Lol Tolhurst, Vince Clarke, Alan Wilder, etc immediately spring to mind? Confused

Cool

I thought Phil was in the Sirens' studio. I cannot imagine them recording a new lp without a bass player either. Let them get on with it without questioning every utterance or move. At the speed of New Order...it's gonna take some time!

Who knows if you can take anything from that article but... if the new album was really an electronica album made with a producer, you wouldn't need a band in the studio. If this is true, I think it would be a good sign that they are inspired to try something new in the studio.

And as far as membership in the band, I think Phil has been prolly regarded as a junior member anyway, not one of the three core members. Phil seems to be all over the Sirens sessions... I don't think Bernard even knows how to play guitar like that.

I think to the greater populace whats left of New Order will always be Sumner, Morris and Gilbert now and that'll be the case no matter how long Phil and that other lad are with the band.

Fair enough, to me. I appreciate their contribution and so on but they're extras, spares. The much-discussed issue of Is It New Order Without Hooky? baffled me. It changed when Gillian had to drop out anyway, I still liked the music they've all done, and will continue to do so now Im sure, but those four people were New Order for so long I cannot accept others as being proper members of the band. Not in an angry way, I accept thats life and things change. I cant understand Hookys point of view that the new line-up isnt New Order as, to me, his old line-up wasnt eithe. Not really.

I do think the new album will be good though. I cant wait to hear the title they give it, theres bound to me some meaning in it.

Totally agree with everything you've written Coops.I will always love NO and can't wait for a new album. And to me the band will always be Sumner, Hook, Morris and Gilbert and no one else. I accept Hooky is no loger there and Phil and the other chap have stepped in, buts its not the same.

Love some Duran, and don't blame Andy Taylor's absence on the other four or Andy. However, love some The Cure and still find it hard to accept anyone but Boris Williams behind the kit even after 20 years. That one is still often a whole big can of worms opened on occasion on certain Cure forums.

Phils been in the band 13 years, and if I remember correctly, he was in a 5 piece version with Gillian briefly circa 2000-2001. So, technically, if you want to be like THAT, "Get Ready" was made as a trio with two extra musicians (Gillian and Phil).

I don't think Phil played any part in the writing of Get Ready?

It was the original 4-piece.

According to Hooky it was an er, 2-piece writing effort; him and Bernard.

Quote:
Bernard and I were very, very together when we did [the 2001 reunion album] 'Get Ready.' Steve and Gillian hardly did anything on 'Get Ready'; Gillian left anyway.

Phil isn't on Get Ready at all. He joined to tour the album. In fact he was the second touring guitarist for the Get Ready gigs, the first was Billy Corgan.

Now Gillian is back, and can strap on a guitar at gigs, I think Phil needs to step back a bit live. Loved it when Gillian played guitar on Ceremony at the last MCR gig. Also, fond memories of her guitar contributions touring Republic.
I'd be surprised if he doesn't do something on the next album though, he's written and recorded with the others a lot now.

It was, it absolutely was. It was three members of New Order and some other people. So was WFTSC. And the next effort will be New Order without Hooky.

And at some point in the future, although someone else can do the maths, Phil will possibly have been in New Order longer than Hooky but even then New Order will be, to me at least, the original four.

All of which I imagine bothers Phil and that other lad not one bit.

Surely Phil was principal guitarist for all these gigs? Coogan's contribution was minimal.

And Coogan only appeared at 6 gigs anyway, if memory serves me.
