I failed at two of them, so got 10 out of 12.

To be fair, I'd've got 11, given a little more to think.

The other one though; no chance I'd've got it.

Your first question is - which of these contestants do you think is the one who has chosen New Order at their specialist subject? Big Grin

OK, I've had an app dictate the questions, so forgive me if some of them are slightly wonky:

1) With the addition soon afterwards of the keyboard player, Gillian Gilbert, New Order was formed by Stephen Morris, Peter Hook and Bernard Sumner, the surviving members of which band?

2) The track 'Temptation' referred to the subject having green eyes, blue eyes and eyes of what other colour?

3) What’s the name of the fictional band who appear in the video for the 2001 single 'Crystal' which inspired the name of a real group?

4) What’s the title of the New Order 2020 single which was the first brand-new music released by the band since the 2015 album 'Music Complete'?

5) A version of the band's track 'Vanishing Point' was used as the theme tune to which BBC television drama series broadcast from 1989 to 1991?

6) The group is said to have lost money on the best selling 12 inch single, 'Blue Monday', because of the expense of producing the record sleeve which was created by which designer?

7) Which Scottish producer and DJ‘s version of 'Age of Consent' is featured on the band's 1995 remix album '? (the rest of) New Order'?

8) The cover of which of the band's singles features a photograph of a Tahitian woman bathing by the American photo-journalist Elliot Elisofon?

9) What’s the name of the drummer with the band 'The Swans' who produced the aptly named 'The B-Side' which featured on the b-side of the EnglandNewOrder number one single, 'World in Motion'?

10) "Once in a while I need a friend, so why won’t you let me recover?" is the opening lines of what 1993 single, taken from the chart-topping album, 'Republic'?

11) In 1988, New Order won a Brit Award for the video 'True Faith', which had been made by which French director and choreographer?

12) Which American singer received a writing credit for the track 'Run' after his publishing company filed a lawsuit alleging its similarity to one of his tracks?

As mentioned, I got ten correct. I probably could've got 7), given more time.
I'd've never got 9). Still can't remember the answer now and I've watched the clip 3-4 times.

Mastermind Q's 7,9 & 11 shouldn't have been allowed haha. I wouldn't have been happy if I'd gone on MM and missed those.

More interesting would be:

1) Where did they play their first gig?
2) What does/did Stephen Morris collect?
3) What did Uncle Bernard wear while recording BM at Britannia Row?

Just watched it. Agree on 9. That's hardly a NO question at all!
Because I refused to buy WIM in 1990 (was in Ireland and Ireland were playing in their first ever world cup. Was NOT going into a record shop to ask for the England song), I don't believe I ever even heard The B-Side. Did buy the 2002 reissue but "the B-Side" wasn't even on that. Just listened now. Am honestly not sure if I've ever listened to that before!

Also the True Faith question. Yeah the video director has been mentioned on here before, but I couldn't remember his name. Another rather tangential question, I think.

So 10 out of 12 for me. Olivia beat me. Olivia beat everyone.
Howie B was easy though. I believe I saw him live at the Royal Festival Hall back in 2014. I think he was supporting Trentmoller as part of the UNKLE curated Meltdown Festival.

Incidentally the previous time we had New Order as a Mastermind subject, it was for the celebrity version with Dom from Dick & Dom in the hot seat. We discussed it on this very thread. You can jump back to page 8, or click this.

A TV commercial promoting an American Football game on CBS this weekend between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills had some industrial/goth version of Blue Monday as BGM. Can't find it on YT or any other streaming site.

WhoSampled lists 66 cover versions of BM. Have a listen through that lot and get back to us!

Or alternatively, Shazam it next time. Or use Google Search For A Song: Android or Apple.

By the way what does BGM stand for? Brilliant Goth Music? Blue Goth-ing Monday? Big Game Music?

Background music.

My immediate thought was Orgy's cover, since American audiences would be familiar with it.

Bloody Hell, that top looks horrible. Especially the lyrics bit.

Also that webpage was like something out of the 90s. I had three pop-ups on entering, then a further one after I’d dismissed the first batch.

Not sure if this is the right place, but in the US, Rhino are running a Christmas countdown promo campaign, and today is New Order

So very low sale prices (eg Movement & PCL boxsets $53.99 each, Low-Life boxset $89.99, various of the 12" reissues are all around the $10 mark)

Totally Killer (2023) has two full minutes of BLT (Shep mix) on its soundtrack.
The IMDB score may be an unremarkable 6.5 but Rotten Tomatoes gives it a crtics score of 87%.

It's like a cross between Back To The Future and Scream with a hint of Mean Girls. All three of those films are actually mentioned in the dialogue, I guess in an attempt to beat us to the punch with a "yes, we know".

Our heroine, Jamie travels 35 years back in time in an attempt to stop her own mother (and three friends) being stabbed to death in a "Scream" style stabbing. Her mother and friends are known as The Mollys because they all dress like Molly Ringwald.
So it's perhaps approriate that as Jamie arrives at a party, New Order is playing when somebody says: "There they are: The Mollys".

In Back To The Future, Marty McFly travels back in time by 30 years to 1955, so this is actually a longer time gap, as Jamie jumps back to 1987. A great New Order year!

Jamie gets to explain to the 1987 people that she's done a "Back To The Future" to stop a murder, but the cops don't believe her, of course.

This isn't the first "back to the 80s" time travel movie to use BLT; we had Hot Tub Time Machine back in 2010. That also had Echo & The Bunnymen's "Dancing Horses" on that soundtrack, whilst this film has "The Killing Moon" which is kind of appropriate.

Oh there's also a really cool Scream-style murder done to Shannon's Let The Music Play. If you like that sort of thing.

Well its actually a Joy Division reference.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/ip...s-everything-is-possible

However I think Jims memory is failing him as Life in a Day came out before Unknown Pleasures.

Some similarities in a way with New Order but then different trajectories in the mid 80s. I travel & Theme for great Cities still hold up well today.
The Bass player was kicked out as well!

This is pretty random. Julian Casablancas singing "Bizarre Love Triangle" lyrics during The Strokes performance of "You Only Live Once" at the Roskilde Festival in 2006. New Order didn't perform at the festival that year so I'm unsure as to why he was referencing the group. The song starts at the 22 minute point in this video with the lyrics popping up a couple of minutes into it.

How I stumbled across this was through searching the Dime a Dozen site for New Order concert recordings. This Strokes gig was in the results with a note about the lyrics. I checked YouTube for a clip and, voilà!

Think this has been mentioned on here already ( by Debaser?) , brief few seconds of Shellshock intro in Maxxxine. Watched it last night. Possibly one of the worst films i've ever seen. Utterly lifeless. I like Mia Goth, but even she seemed totally bored in this . Apparently X and Pearl are superb films ( also featuring Miss Goth) and Maxxxine is the final part of the trilogy. But all involved ,(including Elizabeth Debicky and Kevin Bacon too) with Maxxxine should be ashamed of themselves.
