Am I sh*tposting? Maybe but hey, somebody's got to keep this place alive!

Where's the synth break in this edit? The one at 5:14 below. That's the best part of the track!

"State" isnt one of their most lauded singles, but I think it could have been. Maybe if a producer (John Robie, I guess) had said: "let's work on the quality of those verses, and maybe have less of them"...

I like listening to the production on "Shame". I guess John Robie gets some credit for that.

I'd love to have a re-edit using the original parts of 12" "State" & "Shame", with some better (and less numerous) verses/lyrics. It's almost really good.

Back in the 80s, when New Order had barely done a track that was anything less than 'brilliant', I used to think that 'State' was a rare misstep.
Along with 'Face-Up' and 'Every Little Counts', I used to think these three tracks were pretty poor (at least by NO's standards). Only in my daft, 17-year old opinion, of course (what did I know, eh?).

Now, I love all three of them, especially 'State'.

To be fair, it's probably because there's far more 'less than stellar' stuff by the band, post 1990, to compare those tracks favourably to.
Let's be honest, 'State' is a million times better than 'Chemical', 'Liar', 'Slow Jam', 'Rock The Shack', 'Jetstream' and 'Working Overtime'.

I think 'Shame' is a pretty decent alternate version/remix, so credit to Robie there.

It would be nice if there's a more 'dialled back' version of the track to be included on the Brotherhood set.

I know but cutting out that break is just silly - it's the best bit! By all means edit things down for the 7", but not the good bit.
(I bought the 12" at the time; I think I woulda been p*ssed off with the crappy 7" edit if I had bought that instead).

Gillian featured on Huw Stephens' Round Table last night (BBC 6Music), commenting on the week's new releases.
Sounds like Steve was in the background too, although he wasn't part of the review panel.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001wqy6

She mentioned that they are revisiting The Other Two and reissuing the first LP, apparently.
Seems strange, as that was only reissued back in 2020 by LTM/FBN. I think that was meant to be remastered but ended up being a straight reissue of the earlier LTM release (albeit returning to the original cover, after the earlier release had used the Tasty Fish sleeve).

Maybe this time it will be remastered with the addition of extra tracks. Hope so. Maybe some of their other soundtrack work from the period.

BBC 6 Music currently has an hour of tracks - that sample or are influenced by - Kraftwerk available on the Sounds app & website. All tracks continuous in the mix. Track one is an obscure little ditty by NO that you probably haven't heard of...

6 Music's Rave Forever: A Touch of Kraftwerk

The Sun (of all places) picked up on a story recently about a punk band who released a single in 1979 that only sold 50 copies - that has now been picked up for use in a Hollywood movie. Here's Gary Crowley's twitter (with a BBC news link):

Snack Shack isn't actually a punk film; it's set in 1991. It is quite good though, currently with a score of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 89% audience score. The film is out, although the BBC article doesn't make that clear.
Anyway, what caught my ear was this track. I haven't heard this version before. It's funny when something like this fades in whilst you're watching a film and you think: "wait, is that...?".

Following on from my post above, I've been watching films again.
Sean Penn film Black Flies aka Asphalt City is currently trending on Amazon Prime UK.
In the opening scene (and again in the final scene) is a familiar piece of music. Technically not NO, but if you've been to a NO gig in the past few years you will have heard it.

New Order: Divers (Wagner: Das Rheingold, Scene 1, Vorspiel)

And if there were any lingering doubts about its influence on All Day Long:

He's still hanging on to grudges against old managers, I see.
I think C**t was his name for Ireland manager Mick McCarthy...

I was in the weird position of hating him for walking out on Ireland in 2002, but still kinda supporting his performances for MUFC.

I've just got into this show now. Yes Never Let Me Down worked well at the end of p1. Haven't heard that song for ages, so it sounded kinda fresh.
I usually prefer watching films rather than making a commitment to series like these. I'm about half way through series 1. Somebody tell me if it's worth continuing to the end. No spoilers though please!

Haven't watched the latest episode yet, but will watch tonight.

I wonder if it's the same version as was featured in the trailer for the second game a couple of years back:

Weirdly, the track didn't feature in the actual game and the guitar bit featured in the game was a different 80s song (a-Ha - Take On Me, I think).

Even stranger, although the band was credited for the song, some other female artist got really annoyed with the game developer, as she felt the version they had used had copied her 'version' of the song. I think she wanted some sort of credit.
Very odd that an artist who didn't write a song could feel that she deserved some sort of praise for strumming an acoustic guitar and singing along to someone else's tune.

Perhaps buskers should get credit too...

Originally Posted by: perspexorange Go to Quoted Post

But, surprisingly, this relates to another artist who covered the song a decade ago and not New Order.

This artist is stating the arrangement that they use in the game copies her own arrangement, which used new bits that she put into her version.

https://www.ign.com/arti...w-order-true-faith-cover

This seems very murky (as pointed out in the article). I'm not sure how you can (potentially) claim copyright on a song that isn't yours to begin with.
You'd think that, doing an acoustic version of a 'synth & electric guitars' song is always going to bring about variations in the style of the song.

So at the end of Episode 4 which I watched tonight, we did indeed get acoustic True Faith. I shazamed it, and got a result of:

True Faith by Lotte Kestner (2011)

And then I shazamed the game trailer above which gives me a result of:

True Faith by Ashley Johnson (2020)

So whatever gripes Lotte Kestner may have had about her version being copied for the game trailer have perhaps been assuaged by having her 'orignal' acoustic cover used in the TV series.
On the one hand, I agree that she wasn't in a position to complain about one acoustic cover version copying another acoustic cover version. But on the other hand, I imagine Lotte Kestner may have lost out on some performance royalty money when the game people decided to use an imitation of her cover. I'm guessing they commissioned Ashley Johnson's cover-of-a-cover in order to save money. Otherwise why not use Kestner's 'original'?
Personally I prefer Denise Johnson's (RIP) acoustic cover, but I guess Denise went for a less 'intimate' approach to the song.

Tainted Love by Soft Cell was originally a Northern Soul (i.e failed hit) song by Gloria Jones from 1964. Marilyn Manson did a cover version in 2001 which clearly drew inspiration from Soft Cell's version. I guess Soft Cell's version remains the most successful, so maybe they have less reason to care, but I don't recall there being any legal issues around Manson kinda copying their version. Maybe it feels different if you're an obscure artist though, and you see your chance for exposure undermined with a cost-cutting facsimile of your efforts...

PS As a NO fan I would probably be annoyed if someone came along and had a "bigger" or "better" hit with TF or any of NO's songs. Or JD's. So far, that hasn't happened. Unless you count Operation Blade which was a rip off of Confusion (Pump Panel Reconstruction). I kinda resent Operaton Blade, even though the bits that it borrowed weren't performed by NO in the first place!

It's certainly worth watching until the end of this series (i.e. series 1).

The only issue you might find would be what they decide to do in series 2.

Series 1 pretty much follows the first game. That game (and the TV series so far) have pretty much received universal acclaim, and so they should. Both are excellent.

The second game, although praised for a lot of elements, was pretty divisive (to put it mildly).
If they follow this game (which looks likely, based on recent casting and how close series 1 was to the first game), it may well cause some consternation amongst people and bring up old wounds.

To be fair, a lot of people didn't have a problem with the second game and you might enjoy it. Just be aware that you *may* have problems with series 2.

If you want to remain 'spoiler free' for series 2 until it launches, you might struggle a little.
Don't search for anything regarding 'part 2' and refrain from viewing any online discussion of what series 2 might cover, as the contentious issues will be sure to be mentioned.

Love Will Tear Us Apart is used in the opening of the Hulu documentary Brats which features 80s Brat Pack member Andrew McCarthy contacting the other members and adjacent members to ask about their feelings about that branding and their careers.

This is a documentary that appeals to me and is definitely firmly on my radar (I love John Hughes films and grew up with this group of actors).

Sadly, I think it's going to be on Disney+ in the UK, which I don't subscribe to.
Shame, as I'd really like to see it.

It's a really good doc, and LWTUA is used over the opening. I think it's the only song that didn't appear in a Hughes or Brat Pack film that McCarthy uses.

Speaking of which:

Oh there's one for the Scotland team too.

Incidentally the Brats documentary film is available to stream on "3rd party" android app, Cinema HD. You can put the app on a Firestick or an android phone/tablet as long as you allow apps from unknown sources in your settings. You won't find Cinema HD in the Play store. You can find it HERE.

PS If you do decide to download Cinema HD (for free) you will need a media player as it doesn't have one built in. I recommend MX Player which is also available on the above link.
