I will get it but, to be honest, apart from the first LP (which holds a special place in my heart), I was never that fussed by the later two LPs. There are a handful of really nice tracks on them (For You, Twisted Tenderness and maybe 2-3 others), but nothing to write home about (IMHO).

It's funny, in respect of the first LP, although I love it, it does sound really dated these days in parts. Well, I think so, anyway.

Get The Message, Getting Away With It (not originally on the LP), Patience Of A Saint, Some Distant Memory and, possibly, Idiot Country are the only tracks that still sound pretty fresh to my ears.
Love them as I do, Reality, Tighten Up, Gangster and Try All Your Want sound especially dated. Still, I give the LP regular spins and enjoy it tremendously.

I always think it's strange that 1991's 'Electronic' sounds dated, yet 1989's 'Technique' still sounds very modern.

Yes, pretty much what perspex said. First album reminds of some good times circa 1991 when i was young. Yep, i was actually young, once upon a time.

Classic example of an album being released at a certain point in time that it, for whatever reason, just felt it had to be, with the time and place and a great album too.

A smattering of good songs on the 2nd and 3rd album but those albums just didn't have the luck of falling at a certain point in time.

But anyway, i won't be picking up this new vinyl edition of the hits compilation.

Oh and i did catch Electronic live a couple times. At the Cities In The Park thing memorial for Martin Hannett at Heaton Park, August 1991. They were ok but the headliners that Sunday night Happy Mondays were just an absolute scream. Probably at their height commercially that period. Shaun, Bez and Rowetta just brilliant on that stage that night, i was right down the front, ah happy times.

Second time i saw Electronic was Wembley Exhibition Hall 1 in December 91. A fricking freezing cold December night. Wembley Exhibition Hall 1 was a big, soulless hangar . God. Stereo MCs supported. Spotted Wilson and Gretton afterwards, descending from upper VIP area.

Disc one - Singles (and probably could have been*):

1. Getting Away with It
2. Get the Message (Single Remix)
3. Reality*
4. Tighten Up (Single Edit)
5. Feel Every Beat
6. Disappointed (Single Mix)
7. Forbidden City
8. For You
9. Second Nature
10. If You've Got Love*
11. Until the End of Time (Soulboy Collective 7" Version)
12. Vivid (Radio Edit)
13. When She's Gone*
14. Late at Night (Radio Edit)
15. Twisted Tenderness

Disc two - Best b-sides and remixes

[Open to debate, as remixes generally don't age as well]

1. Lucky Bag
2. Free Will [Extended version. For heaven's sake, do not edit down this glorious track]
3. Second to None
4. Idiot Country Two
5. Imitation of Life [only use New Edit if my vague calculations are off for these tracks to fit on a disc]
6. All that I Need
7. I Feel Alright
8. Radiation
9. Warning Sign
10. Getting Away with It (Extended Version)
11. Feel Every Beat (12" Remix)
12. Disappointed (Original Mix)
13. Until the End of Time (Fluffy Dice Remix)
14. Twisted Tenderness [Guitar Mix]

I like your version better too, Andy.

Rather than a collection of "Best B-sides and remixes", the official second disc looks cobbled together with tracks collectors may not own - luring them into rebuying.

I've collected basically everything on every format by Electronic, (even MiniDisc and cassingles), so no pressing need for these. But yes I'll grab both. Always liked the album artwork so hopefully transfers OK to vinyl. And hoping for some new edits on CD.

Still holding out for a cheaper copy of the Hong Kong "Getting Away With It" 12" promo, if anyone's selling.

My selection isn't perfect (ending both discs with "TT" seems weird now that I look at it), but it's a bit more elegant than their, as you say, "cobbled together" version. I tend to always prefer a chronological approach on compilations. Also, the FBI mix of "Gangster" was lucky to get an official release on a CD single (it's just a DJ made, extended edit), and has no place on a "Best of". "King for a Day" is pretty forgettable, other than its mention of Dracula years before the much derided "Dracula's Castle" on WftSC. And the 808 remix of "Disappointed" and Vocal Remix of "Getting Away with It" have not aged terribly well to these ears. But as you say, people may be happy to get their hands on tracks they've missed.

I think a few of us did alternate track lists when the original GTM comp came out back in the day. Still got some playlists saved.

Had there been unlimited scope, I would've done a 3xCD set covering singles, b-sides and remixes, plus maybe a limited edition of 250 with a DVD or Blu-ray featuring promos and TV appearances:

CD1: The Singles (and some Promos, which were almost Singles)
1. Getting Away With It (Full Length) - AKA the Album Version. Not the mislabelled, edited down "Full Length" on the original single.
2. Get The Message (Album Version)
3. Feel Every Beat (US Promo Edit) - Minus the long fade-in, straight into the guitar but otherwise the album mix.
4. Tighten Up (Album Version)
5. Disappointed (Original mix) - AKA the 'Electronic Mix' in North America.
6. Forbidden City
7. For You (Single Mix) - The remixed single version on the CD1+2 set. Beefed up sound vs the album version.
8. Second Nature (US Promo Edit) - On a 2 track promo CD. Captures the track perfectly, almost like a 7" mix.
9. Until The End Of Time (Fluffy Dice Remix) - Bernard's version from the fan club CD.
10. Prodigal Son (Album Version) - Had its own dedicated 10" promo release.
11. Vivid (Album Version)
12. Twisted Tenderness (Album Version) - Guitar and Instrumental versions exist, so was obviously considered as a Single at one point
13. Make It Happen (Original Mix) - Also had it's own 10" promo release. Original 7:51 mix with the Ice-T samples restored.
14. Late At Night (Radio Edit) - *almost* the same length as the album version, but a better mix overall.

Around 74 minutes.

CD2: The B-sides
1. Lucky Bag
2. Free Will (12" Mix) - Yes, the 12" mix.
3. Second To None
4. Lean To The Inside
5. Imitation Of Life (New Edit) - The original version overdid the headache-inducing outro. The 2006 New Edit nicely fixed that.
6. A New Religion
7. All That I Need
8. I Feel Alright
9. Turning Point
10. Radiation
11. Twisted Tenderness (Guitar/Vocal Mix)
12. King For A Day
13. Warning Sign

About 66 minutes.

CD3: Remixes & Alternate Mixes
1. Getting Away With It (Extended)
2. Get The Message (DNA Groove Mix)
3. Feel Every Beat (Danny Rampling & Pete Lorimer 12" Mix)
4. Gangster (FBI Mix) - Not sure I would include this after all. A copy and paste effort.
5. Tighten Up (Single Edit)
6. Lucky Bag (Miami Edit)
7. Disappointed (808 State Love Glove Mix 12") - The same 808 12" mix, but a mastering DAT recently revealed its full, unused title.
8. Idiot Country Two - The 2013 edit without the samples at the start.
9. Second Nature (Plastik Mix)
10. Until The End Of Time (K-Klassic Mix)
11. Haze (Alternative Mix)
12. Twisted Tenderness (Instrumental)
13. Make It Happen (Darren Price Mix)

About 77 minutes.

DVD/Blu-ray: The Videos
Everything, including the Late At Night variants, EPKs, and various TV show appearances: RTP era tracks on LATER, Vivid on TOTP, Haze on Jo Whiley etc.

(I realise this has veered off NO spotting into Electronic territory, but hey, the DR forum has the most visitors in real terms and within a few posts it'll be business as usual)

Of course, if we had unfettered access to the vaults, there is other stuff that could be considered for an Electronic retrospective:

- The unreleased single remixes of "Tighten Up" that are allegedly languishing in a Warners vault somewhere (according to a Discogs member),
- Those unreleased Second Nature remixes (Journey, Modern and other dubs), but for the most part, I can hear why some of them were kept unreleased.
- The Feel Every Beat (Danny Rampling & Pete Lorimer 12" Dub) and (US Downstairs Dub) that both remain vinyl only, the former which is pretty good and so 1991.
- Soundboard recordings of gigs like supporting Depeche in L.A. and Cities In The Park for Martin Hannett that must surely exist (the Revenge 'Cities' set made it out on CD),
- Instrumental versions. No offence to Barney of course, but lots of bands put out instrumental versions of their LPs and sometimes it can put a whole new perspective on them. Most of the Electronic backing music is brilliant.

Perhaps we should fold all the subforums with any traces of life (Music For Pleasure, Ceremony, etc) into Digital Republic. Even if they had their own separate panels rather than mixed in with pure NO content. There are so few regulars left that it makes no sense to hide them elsewhere. Many simply forget their existence and the doubling up of this Electronic news is a prime example.

Back on (sort of) topic - Spotify has released "Lucky Bag" (full length) as a GTM album taster "single" and it's also available to purchase elsewhere. Qobuz in hi-res.

Likely a first on streaming platforms for this track.

Several interesting items at this auction, some NO box sets here,

but Joy Division stuff is much more interesting as there is an original Factory Sampler FAC 2 and other posters as well as some books, and I don't think I've ever seen this JD poster before: Rainbow Theatre

Can't see this mentioned anywhere, but maybe I didn't look hard enough

I love Johnny Marr's guitar playing, but his solo work usually leaves me a bit dry. His autobiography from a few years back was excellent, but I was on the fence about his new book Marr's Guitars. However I'm reconsidering as the reviews are quite good. This article actually contained an anecdote I'd not heard before: Bernard used one of his guitars on "Regret".

Same, Andy. His solo stuff has done absolute zero for me. Love his guitar work on all The Smiths songs but his own stuff? Nope, nada, zilch.

Same, Andy. His solo stuff has done absolute zero for me. Love his guitar work on all The Smiths songs but his own stuff? Nope, nada, zilch.

It's strange, the music sounds good when I hear it, but I rarely feel an emotional connection to the songs that draws me back for further listening ("New Town Velocity" is an exception).

I know it's not a popular opinion to show appreciation for him these days, but I really liked Morrissey's last album release, I am Not a Dog on a Chain. It's excellent and easily one of his top 3 or 4 solo albums for me.

Actor Jeffrey Wright interviewed on 6Music today.
Apparently, he's a fan of JD, NO and The Smiths. Atmosphere played and he apparently went to see NO in LA a few months back.

I liked him before. More so now.

I must admit I never cared much for The Smiths. In fact, Johnny Marr only came to my attention because of Electronic, back in 1990. Only then I proceeded to find out more about his old band.

I understand why they're great, but I much prefer the solo work of both Moz and Johnny. Both sound much more solid and mature to my ears. I have all Johnny's albums -- and all the singles, I suppose? I've got that 7" box somewhere.

A blink & you'll miss it appearance in this great set from Dave Clarke. About 30mins in I think but account needed to jump around.

We get about 5 mins of it from 29:00 to about 34:00. 'Proper' vocal version (not backwards).

Clarke's productions and track choice tend not to have a lot of warmth (yes I know, that's techno!). He's fine for a few minutes but I probably wouldn't listen to a 2+ hours DJ mix from him.
Lots of classics (or just oldies?) in here mind you, for eg:

Joey Beltram - Mentasm New Mix
Robert Armani - Circus Bells (Ken Ishii Remix)
New Order - Everything's Gone Green (Dave Clarke Remix)
Mr. Lee - Pump Up London (Acid Mix)
Outlander - Vamp (Mike Humphries Retweak)
Underworld - King Of Snake (Dave Clarke Remix)

That's the original mix he submitted for the Rest of... compilation. Apparently Bernard didn't like it because the vocals were "too upfront". Clarke resubmitted it with backwards vocals and it found a spot on the vinyl version. I guess Bernard appreciated his cheek but still didn't think the mix warranted a place on the CD. This original remix did come out on one of Clarke's mix compilations (Remixes & Rarities 1992-2005).

I'll confess to not being desperately familiar with this mix. Glad to be corrected!
