I figure this is the best place to post this (stats from setlist.fm)
https://www.setlist.fm/s.../new-order-63d6b237.html

now granted, an 'average' setlist doesn't really exist,
but its basically the statistical view of the songs they've
played on tour, and weighted with the setlists.

but basically it traces back what i said about minimal changes,
starting from 2001:
=============
new order - average setlists

Code:

2001 Setlist - 19 shows

1 Crystal
2 Regret
3 Transmission (Joy Division cover)
4 Ceremony
5 Atmosphere (Joy Division cover)
6 Your Silent Face

7 60 Miles an Hour
8 Close Range
9 Touched by the Hand of God

10 Bizarre Love Triangle
11 Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover)
12 True Faith
13 Temptation

Encore:
14 Rock the Shack

15 Blue Monday

==========
1 intro - and then the familiar - crystal - regret combo - and usually ceremony
2 you will see the basics - a few joy division tracks - which are now played during the encore
3 mid songs which are replaceable - usually from get ready, or waiting for the sirens call, even some from technique
4 the closers - bizarre love triangle, true faith, temptation, and blue monday
5 the encore, which moved around blue monday, but now is all joy division

going forward:
Code:

2002 Setlist - 16 shows
-------------------------
1 Crystal
2 Transmission (Joy Division cover)
3 Regret
4 Ceremony

5 60 Miles an Hour

6 Atmosphere (Joy Division cover)
7 Close Range
8 She's Lost Control (Joy Division cover)

9 Bizarre Love Triangle
10 Your Silent Face
11 True Faith
12 Temptation

Encore
13 Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover)
14 Blue Monday

not much of difference from previous year, same format

Code:

average setlist 2005 - 24 shows
--------------------------------
1 Crystal
2 Regret

3 Love Vigilantes
4 Krafty

5 Transmission (Joy Division cover)

6 Jetstream
7 Waiting for the Sirens' Call

8 True Faith

9 Atmosphere (Joy Division cover)
10 Bizarre Love Triangle
11 Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover)
12 Temptation

Encore:
13 She's Lost Control (Joy Division cover)
14 Blue Monday

skipping a few years, but a little variation in the middle, but the rest is the same

Code:

average setlist 2006 - 20 shows
------------------------------------
1 Crystal
2 Regret

3 Who's Joe?

4 Ceremony
5 Transmission (Joy Division cover)
6 Krafty

7 Waiting for the Sirens' Call

8 Your Silent Face

9 Turn

10 Bizarre Love Triangle
11 True Faith
12 Temptation
13 The Perfect Kiss
14 Blue Monday

Encore:
15 Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover)
16 Shadowplay (Joy Division cover)

another year, and again, very few changes

5 years later...
Code:

verage setlist for year: 2011 - 6 shows
------------------------------
1 Crystal
2 Regret
3 Ceremony
4 Age of Consent

5 Love Vigilantes
6 Krafty
7 1963

8 Bizarre Love Triangle
9 True Faith

10 5 8 6

11 The Perfect Kiss
12 Temptation

Encore:
13 Blue Monday
14 Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover)

a few more from power corruption and lies, but the rest is the same...

the next year, they started rotating the opener - to elegia
Code:
Average setlist for year: 2012 - 54 shows
------------------------------------------
1 Elegia

2 Crystal
3 Regret
4 Ceremony
5 Age of Consent

6 Isolation (Joy Division cover)
7 Here to Stay
8 Krafty

9 Bizarre Love Triangle
10 True Faith

11 5 8 6

12 The Perfect Kiss
13 Blue Monday
14 Temptation

Encore:
15 Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover)

still following the same format

10 years ago, they started this format, which is what we have now
Code:

average setlist 2013
--------------------
1 Elegia
2 Crystal
3 Regret
4 Ceremony
5 Age of Consent

6 Isolation (Joy Division cover)
7 Here to Stay

8 Your Silent Face
9 Bizarre Love Triangle
10 World
11 True Faith

12 5 8 6

13 The Perfect Kiss
14 Blue Monday
15 Temptation

Encore:
16 Atmosphere (Joy Division cover)
17 Transmission (Joy Division cover)
18 Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover)

586 was the only real change, but the rest is still the same today

Code:

average setlist 2014 - 12 shows
---------------------
1 Elegia
2 Crystal
3 Regret

4 Singularity

5 Ceremony
6 Age of Consent
7 Your Silent Face

8 Californian Grass

9 Bizarre Love Triangle
10 5 8 6
11 True Faith
12 Plastic
13 The Perfect Kiss
14 Blue
15 Temptation

Encore:
16 Atmosphere (Joy Division cover)
17 Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover)

they starting focusing on a couple of tracks from music complete, and a lost siren track
the rest was exactly the same

the next 5 years - excluding the 2 covid year (2020-2021) would see slight variations of this
Code:

Average setlist for year: 2015 - 15 shows
---------------------
Singularity
Ceremony
Crystal

5 8 6
Restless
Your Silent Face
Tutti Frutti
People on the High Line

Bizarre Love Triangle
Waiting for the Sirens' Call
Plastic
The Perfect Kiss
True Faith
Temptation

Encore:
Atmosphere (Joy Division cover)
Blue Monday
Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover)

but with the exception of a few of the middle songs, from music complete, the rest were the same.

so,no for the last year, and this year, we have about 75% of the same songs from 20+ years ago,
with the same format - except now, all the joy division songs are in the encore.

Code:

Average setlist for year: 2022

Das Rheingold: Vorspiel (Richard Wagner song)

Regret
Age of Consent
Ceremony
Your Silent Face
The Perfect Kiss

Be a Rebel
Sub-culture
Bizarre Love Triangle
Vanishing Point
Plastic

True Faith
Blue Monday
Temptation

Encore:
Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover)

Average setlist for year: 2023 - 6 shows
-------
Das Rheingold: Vorspiel (Richard Wagner song)

Crystal
Regret
Age of Consent

Academic

Your Silent Face
The Perfect Kiss
Sub-culture

Be a Rebel
Tutti Frutti

Bizarre Love Triangle
Plastic
True Faith
Blue Monday
Temptation

Encore:
Atmosphere (Joy Division cover)
Transmission (Joy Division cover)
Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover)

i'm pretty sure new order will stick with this format going forward without changing it to much,
except rotating a few songs in and out.

the rest will remain the same.

This recent 5 date tour did see them falling back on complacent setlists, somewhat. I'm guessing they got lazy because, apart from SXSW, it was relatively low profile.

Your quoted stats don't really seem relevant to last year's tour which, while relying on a set of the same 11 core tracks, threw in 3 wild cards each gig from a pool that was impressively deep:

1963
Academic
Age of Consent
As it is When it Was
Atmosphere
Be a Rebel
Bizarre Love Triangle
Blue Monday
California Dreamin'
Ceremony
Decades
Guilt is a Useless Emotion
Love Will Tear Us Apart
The Perfect Kiss
Plastic
Regret
Restless
Sub-Culture
Superheated
Temptation
Transmission
True Faith
Tutti Frutti
Vanishing Point
Your Silent Face

I don't think the band are any different from any other popular legacy band that have been around for 40+ years.

They are always going to include 'the hits' or 'the fan favourites'.

Here are two random recent setlists from a couple of other big legacy bands:

Depeche Mode:

Going Backwards(**)
It's No Good(*)
Barrel of a Gun(**)
A Pain That I'm Used To(**)
Useless(*)
Precious(*)
World in My Eyes(*)
Cover Me(**)
The Things You Said(@)
Home(**)
In Your Room(*)
Where's the Revolution(**)
Everything Counts(*)
Stripped(*)
Enjoy the Silence(*)
Never Let Me Down Again(*)
I Want You Now(@)
Walking in My Shoes(*)
A Question of Time(*)
Personal Jesus(*)

Simple Minds (as I know you like them, -1):

Act of Love(**)
Love Song(*)
Glittering Prize(*)
Promised You a Miracle(*)
Waterfront(*)
Book of Brilliant Things
Let There Be Love(*)
Vision Thing(**)
Belfast Child(*)
Theme for Great Cities(*)
Someone Somewhere in Summertime(*)
See the Lights(**)
Don't You (Forget About Me)(*)
Alive and Kicking(*)
Sanctify Yourself(*)

* = Single (classic era)
** = Single (modern-era)
@ = fan-favourite

As you can see, the two bands are mainly just parading out their classic singles, with a smattering of new singles (mainly taken from their latest LP).
I've not compared them over years in the same way as you have, but I strongly suspect that, if you compared the typical setlists for each band over the last 10 years or so, they're going to paint a similar picture. Not exactly the same, but still including a lot of their hits.

What you have to think about is that, a lot of the people going to see these bands aren't going to be people like you and I, hanging out in forums.
They're going to be people who are like 'oh, <insert legacy band name here> are playing in Seattle in August. I've never seen them, but quite fancy it, as it's local'.

Imagine how disappointed you'd be if you were them and you turned up, they didn't play any singles and you didn't recognise any of the tracks. You'd be pissed off and it wouldn't feel like you actually went to see them.

I know if I went to see Simple Minds, I'd be a bit fed up if they didn't play Love Song or Promised You A Miracle.

Keep the punters happy.

Also, of course, the more a song is played, the more familiar it is.
Leading to more people wanting to hear it.

It feeds itself.

Edit: Couple of edits on my previous post above (which I couldn't edit, as it was rejected as SPAM). Barrel of a Gun should've been classed as (*) track and 'Theme From Great Cities' as a (@).
There are possibly other errors too but, either way, you get my point.

that's all well and good, but not really helpful to those, going to several shows, which usually doesn't happen.

and if you only hear 1 or 2 different songs, then you wouldn't really want to spend that much money on seeing them multiple times.

back in the 80's or 90's, if i liked a band, i would see them 2-4 times if possible, and sometimes the shows would be very different.

this discourages people from seeing them more than once.
also, they have had several live releases, so why not put some of those rarer tracks on there,
instead of the usual, as they have for the last 3-4 releases.

i have seen both simple minds, and depeche mode a few times.

but make note : simple minds rarely tours the US, so i would end up going no matter what the setlist is.
i've given up on depeche mode after 1987, because that was the last great album i liked from them (black celebration)

but i have gotten many of the live albums from band bands, bootlegs, and youtube videos.

--

i could make an argument for simple minds - they have altered their show radically from 2000, and have a long, deep setlist,
which does have core songs, and rotates others as they come and go, depending on if they have a new album or not.

depeche mode is prolific, and since they also maintain a regular album release schedule, they will tour no matter what.

---
i guess my point is there is much less variation for new order - although they have not done, as i mentioned, played an album
in its entirety, and then added the greatest hits.

that would be enough for me, but i doubt they would do it.

simple minds had a 5x5 tour where they brought a ton of classics, and depeche mode had a greatest hits tour, where they
played a lot of classics for the last time.

the only significant thing new order was an orchestral show in australia (no recording), and the MiF shows, which are only
partially on youtube (but no official released video), but fortunately many physical releases. so that was decent.

---
if you live in the UK you are spoiled by all the bands you get to see, and yearly also,
here in america, they usually don't come as often, or if they do, they don't really tour in the same places.

so its disappointing after every 5-10 years of seeing them, and hearing mostly the vast number of same songs again each time.

and yes you are right, it happens with a lot of bands
--
the cure
human league
duran duran
erasure
flock of seagulls
abc
kraftwerk [still well worth it for the visuals]
etc

however, there are many bands that change things up that i do like
--
psychedelic furs
modern english
the fixx
underworld
many of the techno artists

anyways, i just wanted to back up my claim about the band and their shows.

i know it won't change, but it would be a nice surprise if they did.

Totally agreed.

To be honest, I'd settle for 2 or 3 old favourites introduced. Classic stuff, that they haven't played in years, such as Everything's Gone Green and Thieves Like Us (although I doubt Bernard's vocal range could do the latter justice and this might be why they don't attempt it any more).

The MiF gigs were incredible and they should've taken them on tour (although the logistics, presumably, were problematic).
It was great to see some old classics dug out and I really wish they'd do something similar again.

I suppose, off the back of it, we did get revamped airings of Vanishing Point, Sub-Culture, Shellshock etc. (although the latter hasn't been used that much). So that's something.

I believe Steve especially had a lot of work deconstructing and reconstructing the tracks for MiF, so I guess it would be a lot of work doing something similar for another batch of classics. Shame.

There seems to be a disconnect in your logic. Their setlists aren't designed for maniacal fans such as us who would like to go to multiple gigs each tour. They're perfectly acceptable for the vast majority of people who go to see them once.

"Guilt is a Useless Emotion" was the only one from this list that was played in New Orleans. I actually would have loved to have heard "Vanishing Point", but it was only played once on this tour (Dallas). And "1963", "As it is When it Was" and "California Dreamin" are actually quite uncommon.

...and they will never play an album in its entirety. I can't imagine Bernard would find it appealing and they certainly don't want to be seen as emulating Peter Hook & the Light. Fortunately, the positive response to Hooky's tours has influenced New Order to occasionally dig out some long ignored treasures in the last few years ("AiiWiW", "In a Lonely Place", "Lonesome Tonight" and "Thieves Like Us", for instance).

sorry, you're looking at the wrong quote.
its sometimes hard to edit long posts on here.

i agree on the first block of songs with you.
those are rare, and you don't hear them often.

its the second block of songs that you can see is what i meant.
starting from 'age of consent' onwards.

if you had looked at my initial post, you would see those 10-15
songs are the ones that never change.

those are the core songs that they've been playing for at least 20 years.
thats the proof, and that's what i've been commenting on all along.

But what would you have them do?
Not play the hits / fan-favourites?

As much as I would LOVE the band to perform a set full of deep cuts, we know that's never going to happen when they have tracks, like Blue Monday, True Faith and Temptation to whip out.

Here's a little story about the MiF gigs which, I think, sums up the opinion of the average person (i.e. not super-fans like us) on legacy bands.

Before heading to Granada Studios on the day of the gig I went to, my good friend and me decided to do an afternoon / evening on the beer in Manchester.

Calling at our fourth or fifth venue of the 'pub crawl', we went into a bar called 'Bar Atlas', just opposite where the Haçienda used to be.
When trying to chose a suitably nice gin for our G&Ts, the bartender asked 'oh, are you here for the gin tasting?'.
To which my reply was 'How much?'. His response was 'Free!'. To which I then responded 'Yes, yes we are!'

So, we sat on a balcony outside, overlooking the Haç flats, whilst we were treated (and I mean treated!) to copious amounts of free gin. All of this was provided by an Australian couple who had come over to the UK to promote their brand ('Four Pillars' - very nice, highly recommended, incidentally).

Anyway, several very large drinks in, we got really friendly with this lovely couple and the topic turned to 'are you local, why are you in Manchester etc.' To which the following conversation occurred:

Us: We're here to see a gig.

Them: Oh, who's playing?

Us: New Order.

Them: New Order! Wow, we love them! They're playing here, tonight? In their home town? Awesome! Any idea whether we can get tickets?

Us: Doubtful. They sold out a few months back.

Them: Oh, that's a real shame! We'd have loved to see them.

Us: Yeah, bit of a bummer. They're doing a really cool thing too, with a synth orchestra, where they're not-playing the hits and playing 'deep cuts' that they've not played for years. No 'Blue Monday' etc.

Them: Oh! Really?... I'd don't think I'd really want to see them then.

So, there you go - average non-fan's opinion of a legacy band, I would imagine.

(Incidentally, free booze, a sunny Manchester and New Order at the MiF - I've had worse days! :-D)

If you think about it, unless you're really invested in a band, you're probably only ever going to see a band a handful of times (maybe only once for some people).
For them, they don't mind hearing hit after hit. That's really what they're paying to see.

Case in point, me and The Cure. I love early Cure (first 4 x LPs, plus Disintegration too) and have liked them since the late 80s.
Never been to see them live, but would like to.
However, I doubt I'd really be desperate to see them more than once. But you can bet that I would hope, when I they'd play A Forest, Boys Don't Cry and Love Song. If they didn't (no guarantees with Robert), although I might've enjoyed the gig, I'd likely walk away at least a little disappointed,

I think they've added pretty much everything you could think of apart from EGG. The reason I've not been for a while is the predicatability of the setlist. You can guarantee the last hour will be TF/Plastic/BLT/BM/Temptation/LWTUA + 1 other JD and maybe TPK and its been that for 15 years+. These are big songs that suit big venues but it seems relentless with the lasers etc. I'd love if they mixed the set round and played some at the start instead of this crescendo but that would play havoc with Bernard's memory and autocue.

I remember seeing them in the mid-80s and they didn't play BM on 4 occasions at least and I still enjoyed it.

Yeah, but that's because you're a big fan. You'd've probably been pleased whatever they played. I know I would've been.

The average person who 'quite likes' the band and thinks it might make a good day out, will probably be a bit p'd off if the hits aren't played.

But, I do agree with you and -1 in that I would like to see the set shifted around quite a bit.
I think someone mentioned it before, but how cool would it be to start with Blue Monday?
Those drums etc. The crowd are likely to react positively and the band has still got plenty of killer tunes in the bag for the inevitable encore.

I've seen them enough times that all I ever hope for now, in regards to the setlist, is that they play at least 1 song I've not experienced live before. That's a big ask when you're seeing them 3 gigs in a row like I did last year, but it did happen with a couple of tracks in Hollywood. While there was nothing fresh in New Orleans, they had great energy and I was impressed that some of the visuals had been changed from last year's tour. Also, things like the "The Perfect Kiss" synth bassline sounding different gives me comfort that they're not just going through the motions (the 1993 tour was far worse in that respect).

One other thing: Despite going straight to the merch line to score the limited Substance shirt instead of heading to the barrier, there was only one person in front of me for the New Orleans gig. But I was still far closer than I've been in years due to the size of the venue. It appears Bernard is no longer using an autocue, unless it's somehow built into the wedges pointed at him. I looked for one but didn't see it. If there is one, it was well hidden, and his eyes weren't going there as had been apparent at some gigs in recent years. It was very nice to see him singing with his eyes closed and head pointed skyward (when not looking at his fretwork) focusing on the vocals instead of the words. Check out my photos on that gig's thread to see if I'm missing something or not.

thank you all for the commentary.

i just wanted to backup my claims about the constant setlist, and the nonchanging parts mostly.

yes, we would like some variety or something fresh once in awhile, but we can hope for more MIF shows,
or one offs from time to time.

as long as they record in full, audio and video, that's good enough for me
(Looking at the orchestral Australian concert). still have only seen a few
clips from it.

Here are two random recent setlists from a couple of other big legacy bands:

Depeche Mode:

Going Backwards(**)
It's No Good(*)
Barrel of a Gun(**)
A Pain That I'm Used To(**)
Useless(*)
Precious(*)
World in My Eyes(*)
Cover Me(**)
The Things You Said(@)
Home(**)
In Your Room(*)
Where's the Revolution(**)
Everything Counts(*)
Stripped(*)
Enjoy the Silence(*)
Never Let Me Down Again(*)
I Want You Now(@)
Walking in My Shoes(*)
A Question of Time(*)
Personal Jesus(*)

depeche mode just opened their US tour.

here's the first setlist:

Depeche Mode, 3/24/23, Golden 1 Center, Sacramento
1. "My Cosmos Is Mine"
2. "Wagging Tongue"
-3. "Walking in My Shoes"
-4. "It's No Good"
5. "Sister of Night"
-6. "In Your Room"
-7. "Everything Counts"
-8. "Precious"
9. "Speak to Me"
10. "A Question of Lust"
11 "Soul With Me"
12. "Ghosts Again"
13. "I Feel You"
-14. "A Pain That I'm Used To"
-15. "World in My Eyes"
16. "Wrong"
-17. "Stripped"
18. "John the Revelator"
-19. "Enjoy the Silence"
20. "Waiting for the Night"
21. "Just Can't Get Enough"
-22. "Never Let Me Down Again"
-23. "Personal Jesus"

so 11 of the songs were on it, and the rest were different.

thats quite a change i would think, and they do have a lot more variety to choose from.

now maybe going forward things won't change that much, but thats quite a different
listing from their hits.

Puzzled as to why they've dropped the Planet Funk version of WFTSC from the sets over recent years. I felt it was a big euphoric stomper that fitted in very well with the big hits set.

Think they played Thieves Like Us a couple of times some years back, within the last 10 years but maybe they decided it didn't flow with the set. Same with Lonesome Tonight which the played a few times circa 2015-16.

The gigs are more and more geared towards the big hitter crowd pleasers now, have been for a long time and that ain't gonna change now. You won't see something like Vicious Streak randomly dropped in , not sure they ever did that one live ever come to think.A shame because that's the kind of song Bernard would find his way around well with his vocals these days i think. How about Slow Jam? I know, i know but i always rated it!

Re: The Cure. First gig i ever went to was them at Birmingham NEC in 1985. God, it went on for hours. I liked their singles and various album cuts and still do but wasn't so familiar with some of their earlier stuff back then. Would probably love it more now as i know all their albums up to and including Disintergration well. Stuff after that like The Wish album not so much.

Quite different on the surface, but I think it's because they have new material. I think your disappointment with New Order's sets is really based on the fact they can't seem to pull their fingers out and record and release a new album (even though you apparently don't like anything they've released in decades).

I was at the Depeche Mode concert last night in San Jose. The set was identical to the tour opener in Sacramento. They played 5 songs that didn't exist on their last tour from the new album they are promoting. They played nothing from the last album they were promoting in your "random" previous tour setlist.

Edited by user 26 March 2023 13:57:35(UTC)  | Reason: Didn't change hardly anything, like Depeche Mode.

it's not about new music.

i don't care if new order drops in 2-3 songs from any 'recent' album or hypothetical 'new one'.

it's about the fact they have many other songs they could be using in the setlist

in case you havent noticed, many of the songs are not album tracks
- temptation
- blue monday
- ceremony
- touched by the hand of God
- true faith
- everythings gone green

so its not like they can't drop in 'this time of night', 'way of life', 'primitive notion' or some other non-hits,
because it wouldn't really matter. no one asked or supposedly liked sub-culture, but yet
no it is a constant (for the record i like it). but yes, 5-8-6, or thieves like us, or even
waiting for the sirens call could work.

would it be that hard to change the setlist up every year? they did it from 1980-2000,
and maybe a little longer.

it's not about bernard not hitting notes, his voice has been changing, and he has adapted
to new keys for the songs.

i think its just taking the easy way out, thats all.

I know I'm wasting ny time responding, but you give really poor examples.
TbtHoG and EGG haven't exactly been on heavy rotation of late.

People love Sub-Culture. It always gets a tremendous response. It has every right to be in the set and that's really only been since the MIF gigs.

I agree they can be complacent with the setlists, but Thieves Like Us (never particularly good live), WftSC (original and Planet Funk versions) and 586 (heavily reworked, not "lazy") have all been played in recent years.
