Its 80s day on Radio 6 and Stephen has put together a synth mix that is being played as I write this: Yello, Liasons Dangereuses and Kraftwerk so far. I'm sure it will be on the BBC Sounds app later.

Yello: Oh Yeah
Liaisons Dangereuses: Los Niños Del Parque
Kraftwerk: The Telephone Call
Scritti Politti: Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin)
The Rake: Street Justice
Sylvester: Rock The Box

How did my predictions go?
Track 2: Direct hit!
Track 3; Right band, wrong track. I guess Steve went for the one that influenced 1963.
Track 6: I'm claiming half a point for predicting Patrick Cowley. Sylvester of course collaborated with Cowley on Do You Wanna Funk. So, pretty damn close.

Other thoughts: Scritti Politti. What a great track that was. I used to cane Scritti's Cupid & Psyche '85 album "back in the day". Time to dig it out.
The Rake: oh god this is bad! Either I never heard this track or I've chosen to forget it. A big nope from me.
Yello: Oh Yeah. Even though I already knew the track when Ferris Bueller came out, I'll always associate it with Ferris washing his hair and then driving his dad's vintage Ferrari. Oh how I yearn for the days when you could bunk off school and um, tear around town in your dad's Ferrari....

Catching up on Steve's mix on BBC Sounds now. Good to hear The Telephone Call again. Bernard also chose it for his Tracks Of My Years on Radio 2 some years ago. Wood Beez also great to hear again. Yep, agreed, that Cupid & Psych album was absolutely everywhere back in them olden days 1985.

Didn't know that Liaisons Dangereuses track. Or that tune by The Rake.

Didn't have 6Music on at all today so missed all this 80s stuff but have downloaded all the 30 minute mixes and will catch up. Jeremy Healy and Simon Raymonde both contributed and Coldcut did a 'Mix Up' thing of their 1989 album What's The Noise?

No, I was in a rush to let the world know about this mix while it was on air (unfortunately the quality of the tunes he chose went right downhill after Kraftwerk though Big Grin

Looks like they've had this banner for a while now but I don't usually watch Man City.
I spotted it today during highlights of the FA Cup match with Chelsea.

incidentally I've heard that Mr Cummins can be a bit touchy (and block-y) on twitter. Perhaps it's true...

I believe they've nicked "Giggs Will Tear You Apart Again" and substituted Phil (Foden) for Giggs, so to speak. They sang it after he scored today. The gits.
Well perhaps Ian would like it...

Cummins always strikes me as really antagonistic every time I see him interact with anyone.

The above is a good example of this.

Just because Bernard doesn't go to matches doesn't necessarily mean he's not a fan. People like the Gallaghers (for example) are probably happy to be recognised at the Etihad, based on the kind of people they are. Bernard, being the private sort of person he is, might not want the inevitable attention he would get if he was in the Old Trafford stands.
Mr Cummins, being the other end of the camera lens, probably doesn't get recognised much at all and can slip under the radar.

All that being said, I don't think Bernard is that much of a football fan really and probably wouldn't go to that many of the games anyway. But nothing wrong with that. As long as he 'nails his colours to the mast' and sticks with them, that's all that matters. Just support your team in the way that you can.
I used to go to Old Trafford all the time, but haven't been for years. Doesn't mean I'm any less of a fan; just that my priorities have changed.

Sorry D. I missed your statement above, nestled between the two Twitter posts.

Yep - I've seen quite a few really prickly posts from him.

I've probably mentioned this before but I really wanted to pull him up on something a year or two ago. He was criticising one of those designer clothing companies flogging a pair of trainers (or some such) with the UP design on them at £250-£300 a pop.

He had a point, but it might've been held more weight if he hadn't been trying to sell, at that time, his 'strictly limited, signed, tracing paper, slipcase, different sleeve and a tacky badge' variant of the reprint version of his 'Juvenes' book for £495!. Half a grand for a book. Half a grand! And a reprint at that.

https://specialeditionbo...cts/joy-division-juvenes

Looks like he found 100 punters.

It does make me laugh that whole 'limited edition' thing. The original print of the book, back in the day, was meant to be 'limited edition', so you could argue that he probably shouldn't have ever reprinted. Those people who shelled out for the original presumably bought them assuming that the 'Juvenes' presentation of his (much reprinted already) material was a 'one-off'.

What's stopping him releasing a further 'limited edition' in future? The whole point should be 'this is a once in lifetime' chance to buy this book. Not something that he re-releases every few years.

At least the trainers were functional...

Hmm, interesting choice. Again, there's got to be someone in the Beeb who's a fan. What with those two recent trailers etc.

Tonight I spotted another BBC series trailer with JD music on it. I think it was called ‘The Gold’ and it featured ‘Digital’ (which is an unusual, but welcome, choice).

Right you are. A dramatization of the Brink's-Mat robbery of 1983. Have they resisited the temptation (no pun intended) to feature a certain well known 12" from that year on the soundtrack? We'll have to see...

From the YouTube description:

Quote:
"The crime of the Century" 💰

Inspired by the iconic true story of the Brink’s-Mat robbery and the decades-long chain of events that followed.

On the 26 November 1983, six armed men broke into the Brink’s-Mat security depot near London’s Heathrow Airport, and inadvertently stumbled across gold bullion worth £26m. What started as 'a typical Old Kent Road armed robbery' according to detectives at the time, became a seminal event in British criminal history, remarkable not only for the scale of the theft, at the time the biggest in world history, but for its wider legacy.

Inspired by extensive research and interviews with some of those involved in the events, The Gold is a pulsating dramatization which takes a journey into a 1980s world awash with cheap money and loosened morals to tell this extraordinary and epic story for the first time in its entirety.

Just remembered this! An Eastenders and New Order connection. The character Lofty from back in the 80s played by Tom Watt. Tom did a song Subterranean Homesick Blues and Bernard, Steve, Gillian and Andy Robinson appeared in the video. Steve at times sitting on the fridge , sometimes dancing behind the sofa while Gillian smiles. Bernard on the sofa a lot with the lovely Brix Smith! Hadn't watched this amusing little video for years. I think the song dates from around 1986/87 ?

HaHa. Yeah, this is one of those bizarre things that one can almost imagine they dreamt about but never happened.

I got this on an old VHS trade I did with a guy called Steve Dean in about 1993.

As weird now as it was then.

Still… great stuff and fun to see the band (sans Hooky) having fun.

For some reason, my post keeps getting rejected as spam, so I'm having to try and push this through in a different format.

Woman is Josie Lawrence.

The others might include C P Lee and John Scott.

I've no idea who John Scott is. Think C P Lee was involved in the Watt song and he used to be in Alberto y Lost Trios Paranoias.

Josie Lawrence was always a contestant on the 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' TV show.

Haven't watched the latest episode yet, but will watch tonight.

I wonder if it's the same version as was featured in the trailer for the second game a couple of years back:

Weirdly, the track didn't feature in the actual game and the guitar bit featured in the game was a different 80s song (a-Ha - Take On Me, I think).

Even stranger, although the band was credited for the song, some other female artist got really annoyed with the game developer, as she felt the version they had used had copied her 'version' of the song. I think she wanted some sort of credit.
Very odd that an artist who didn't write a song could feel that she deserved some sort of praise for strumming an acoustic guitar and singing along to someone else's tune.

Perhaps buskers should get credit too...
