The original Heardle had LWTUA over the weekend but is was a version I'd not heard before - and I've heard a lot of versions of LWTUA over the years.

Indie At The BBC programme on BBC2 last Saturday night. Compilation of old clips ( was this an old repeat?)

Temptation from the August 84 BBC Rock Around The Clock bash was shown. Thing is they included Richard Skinner's intro to the programme at the start of the clip and I thought oh they're going to show Age Of Consent from the performance but then jumped straight onto Temptation. They cut it at the false end so omitted Barney's " Oh it's the last time, it fuckin' is!" from the later part of the clip.

Interesting to see the video quality. It did look VHS and it was mentioned in the caption about the original BBC tape no longer existed so they used a VHS recording. You could tell the poorer quality compared to the other clips in the programme.

True Faith Pettibone remix over end credits of episode 2 of AIDS: The Forgotten Tapes on BBC2.Think only the first episode has been aired but I watched all 3 on iplayer .You kind of forget now what a massive scary thing AIDS was in the 80s.Old footage in the series really takes you back to that time.

Confusion 1983 Arthur Baker instrumental on 6Music this morning.I think Stuart Maconie meant to play Confusion main mix but played the instrumental by mistake.Or it could have even been Confused Beats, i get hazy on which is which with those 1983 mixes.Sounded cool on the radio though, either way.Part of 6Music's all day 80s rave today.

Rolling Stone Magazine: 200 greatest dance songs of all time. The fact that they said "songs" rather than tracks probably isn't a good sign. There's a mixture of good and bad in here. And of course some of the good stuff is ranked way below some of the bad stuff. BM is at No 7 No. 18, and a track that was on N.O.'s Back To Mine comp is at No 1. So there's that. [If you don't wanna scroll from No 200 there's a shortcut along the top breaking the list up into segments.]

Also

Was listening to this week's BBC Essential Mix from Vintage Culture. At 1hr,3 mins; Blue Monday. I thought it was Vintage Culture's own edit but it turns out to be the Freemasons mix - which is actually Shazam-able. I don't think I realised that the Freemasons remix was kinda official, but maybe I just didn't care...
If you're outside the UK you can also listen here, though I can't really recommend Vintage Culture's 2-hour mix as a whole.

I've discovered Tom (Peel) Ravenscroft's "Ravers Hour" - Friday nights on 6 Music, thanks to the BBC Sounds app. Now THAT'S an hour of banging tunes in the mix.

Umm, it's #18? It should be in the top 10, and NO WAY is Disclosure's Latch a bigger dance anthem than Madonna's Vogue.

Of course we know these lists are always subjective.

We all know these lists don't really mean much. But it's still satisfying to see New Order and Joy Division mixing it up with the more mainstream artists in the upper reaches.

Steve is the focus of the latest 'Electronically Yours' podcast from Martyn Ware. Presumably available through all major podcast providers (it's on Apple Podcasts, for example).

Good spot. Hooky did one of these too back in May 2021. You can just press play on Ep104 in this link and scroll back through the others too, if you like.

EDIT: Steve twittered about it:

Gave the podcast a listen. Pretty good though i got a little lost on some of the tech chat.Stephen is writing another book? Or a novel, not clear. And there's a lot of swearing on podcasts these days isn't there? Is it necessary? Browsed through what other guests Martyn Ware has had on and there''s an episode with Roger Lyons. Might give that a go , wonder if he talks at all about his work on revamping and programming for the live version of Blue Monday back in the early 2000s. Also an episode with Will Sargeant and many more

Listened to the Roger Lyons ep. He didn't talk about his work on the live version of BM but did mention about Bernard's autocue failing at the 2005 Hyde Park gig. Moisture had got in the laptops and Bernard spent the whole gig just singing "la la la because he couldn't remember the lyrics" . Eh? I was at that gig and Bernard sang all the lyrics fairly well from what i recall.Deffo that gig because Roger mentioned that they were playing Glastonbury the next day.

I mentioned previously that YSF featured in the 2019 film adaptation of The Goldfinch.

I guess this is old news, but tihs week I discovered the track in another film; 2008's Bronson starring Tom Hardy.
Around 35 minutes into the film, as Hardy/Bronson is preparing to leave jail* we get a sort of montage featurng the instrumental sections of YSF edited together for about a minute and a half. It even made the Soundtrack album.

*most of the film involves Hardy/Bronson either going into jail, coming out of jail, or getting up to things in and out of jail.

Yes i saw that film some years ago and remember YSF featuring. From what i recall, i'm not sure i was fully convinced the music fitted or was apt for the scene. Nice try but...dunno, maybe the song is too hardwired to my brain to associate it with a film scene about a hardened criminal. Of course, to anyone previously unaware of the song it may have worked brilliantly with the scene.

It can't be too often that The Him gets played on BBC Radio 1 these days. But Helena Hauff played it in the "New Wave" episode of her current residency (no tracklist BBC? For shame!).

Yet another indicator of just how iconic Blue Monday has become: NYPost.com

I have a friend that's not really that into music (so we can never be that close). I made her a mix CD of New Order just to try to convey my obsession to her (she grew up on Linkin Park and Smashing Pumpkins, etc). I asked her what she thought and her response was "I'm addicted to the drums on Blue Monday". This says to me that track possesses the power to affect people that aren't even music fans.

Spotted this on YouTube:

Interview with Sheila Rock, music photographer, in which she name checks the band and tells a story.

Warning: the interviewee doesn't really draw breath and, to put it politely, is 'in the zone' when it comes to occupying the conversation.

So, start watching at 23:52 to get to the good stuff.

There might be a bit more about New Order earlier in the interview - the interviewer pointedly refers to the band as if something negative might've been said about them before.
However, after watching the first five minutes of the interview I was put off listening to the whole thing and scrubbed to the relevant bit.

From what I heard, she has photographed some great artists and has led the life. So I'm sure there's more interesting bits in the interview.

I've heard of rock photographer Mick Rock (RIP) but was unaware of Sheila Rock. I guess if you're a photographer with the surname Rock, you're obliged to be a rock photographer!

For me it was more her langorous, long-pause style that stood out. Like someone needed to pep her up with speed or coke or something.

So the interviewers appear to be music journos, David Hepworth and Mark Ellen both formerly of the revamped 1980s "Whistle Test" (no Old Grey). I was looking at the Wikipedia page for Whistle Test and was less than thrilled to read that "the series was cancelled in early 1987 by Janet Street-Porter, who had been appointed head of Youth Programmes at the BBC". Thanks Janet, you gobby cow. I didn't like you much as a presenter, and don't think much of your 'decision' either. What did she replace it with? Anything?

Did you watch to the end? The last thing she says at 28:43 (not NO related) seems to leave both men speechless. Mark Ellen jumps in with "different times" whilst Hepworth seems to be moving his mouth but unable to get any words out! They quickly end the interview after that.

She says she told them to go back to Manchester, but clealry she did manage to get a couple of pictures, and they look quite familiar. So perhaps not a total waste of time.

Sad, obsessive fan that I am, I search for the band on YouTube every few days and sort to show recent uploads.
On occasion, I find something interesting, like a foreign interview etc. Sadly though, it’s mostly just badly filmed camera-phone snippets from recent gigs.
