I didn't watch that BBC series Industry a while back, maybe I'll see if it's still on iplayer. But this guy Nathan Micay did the music for it? Anyway, he compiled an Ambient Focus mix for 6Music last year I think and it was repeated a few weeks back. Downloaded it and listening now. Some cracking stuff on this

I didn't watch it either, but I did listen to the Essential Mix:

A couple of tracks contained within:

Do you think you're better off alone? Remember that from Alice Deejay?

^ Thanks, D.Yes i read on some of the YouTube comments on Nathan Micay's Industry main theme that his Essential Mix is fab and worth checking out.I'll try and give that a listen. That Green Light/Fun Night mix is pretty good, i played your embed.Though the original still betters it for me.That Analogue Dear track is a piano version of that Alice Deejay You're Better Off Alone track from the 90s? I do remember the Alice Deejay tune but i couldn't pick up on that the piano version is a cover...have i understood correctly?

We were in London last night for another all nighter at Troxy.Wandering the streets in the city at 6am this morning trying to find our way back to Euston, surrounded by the corporate towers must have led me to look up Industry and Nathan Micay's Ambient Focus mix for 6Music when we finally got back to the midlands.

Kind of interested to watch Industry now, if it's still available. It's all about fresh out of Uni 20 somethings trying to forge a career in the City i think?? That world is a long way away from mine in a small market town but i can kind of put myself in the shoes of those kids trying to find their way in the City.

I followed your example as I also have the BBC Sounds app on my phone.

Yes you have understood. I noticed it when listening to the Essential Mix (on BBC Sounds) at the time and I checked the tracklisting to make sure it was what I thought it was. You can make out the chorus melody (gently) from about 1:15 on the embed above. And you can make out (half of) the original intro melody around 2:13.

Anyway my thoughts on the ambient mix? I listened to it twice. The second time I knew there were some tracks I wanted to skip over, e.g Taylor Swift and Kath Bloom. But I enjoyed other tracks, particularly the one below (first 8 minutes were in the mix). Incidentally someone has put the mix on Spotify, even though it has expired on BBC Sounds now.

I guess when this came out in 1997 it was for an an entirely non-existent episode of Twin Peaks. I'd like to hear this on a big soundsystem, e.g. Brixton Academy whilst waiting for a band to come on stage. Maybe early in the evening, entering the venue.

Stars Of The Lid - Music For Twin Peaks Episode #30 Parts 1 & 2

It put me in mind of some other Drone music like this:

I Break Horses - Heart To Know

And, before there was Spiritualized, there was Spacemen 3. I'm not sure if this is strictly drone music, but near enough.

Spacemen 3 – Big City (Everyone I Know Can Be Found Here) - Recurring

^ Ah OK thanks for confirming about that piano cover of the Alice Deejay tune.

Glad you found some stuff you liked in Micay's Ambient Mix.

Yes I like some of Stars Of The Lid's stuff. Think I'd seen on streaming that Twin Peaks one that wasn't actually in Twin Peaks. Will give the whole 21 minutes a spin. They have a track called Don't Bother They're Here which became a favourite of mine for listening to at sunrise after all nighters in summer 2021.

I have a 12" of that Spacemen 3 track but a slightly different version. Its the Revolution mix or something I think. Pretty much the same as that Recurring mix really . I was aware of Spacemen3 in the 80s because they were from my small hometown Rugby. I wasn't a massive fan of them back then but I think I used to see Jason Pierce around town in the mid 80s when I was a teenager but didn't know he was back then although I was aware of Spacemen3. There was a moody looking dude in shades around town at night in ooh...1984-85 who I'm now convinced was Jason Pierce.Think he used to drive a Volkswagon Beetle .Sonic Boom did a DJ set in Rugby a few years back but alas I missed it.

Associates on TOTP in 1982.Isn't the groovy chick on the piano Martha Ladly , later to be the girlfriend or wife of Peter Saville? And the painter of the image for the Factus 8 sleeve? Or am i getting her mixed up with someone else? Either way the lady is very, very lovely in this clip Smile Oh and great coat, Billy (RIP)

I saw them live once at This.
That DVD suggests that Nick Cave and Steve Mason only did one song each, but they did more. I think it went on til 1am or something at Brixton Academy.
A friend I was with warned me that Spiritualized can "go on a bit" live. And he wasn't wrong. They can be simultaneously brilliant and boring in the same song. Had a habit of dragging things out too long so that you start thinking: "move it along now please!". But I was still glad to have caught them live.

Yeah I'm kind of thinking it'll be 50% brilliant and 50% not so brilliant. Still, be good to finally catch them live like you said.

Really enjoyed the show tonight. A lot of the big loud guitar ones dominated the night. On record I've always been more of a fan of the mellower numbers but the big loud songs were fabulous tonight. They do a lot of that "improvised, cacophonous wall of sound" to close out songs, don't they! The 3 girls on the gospel backing vocals were brilliant, kind of carried the show.. Jason was bloody great too. They played for 2 hours. Really glad I've now seen them live

If you ever want to annoy your neighbours (because they really deserve it), then these two seem to do the trick. Laptop speakers don't do them justice. Crank up the bass!

Midfield General: Bass Mechanic (NO fans should recognise something here)

^ I gave those two you posted a spin, D.Yeah i think that Bass Mechanic one was posted before , possibly by your goodself sir, in a thread about tracks NO sampled.Yeah, spotted the NO sample and quite a banger of a beat.I did though prefer the Disco Sirens one, liked the funky bass on that one.

On a slightly more chilled vibe, i heard this in Chivalry on Channel 4 the other night. It played in a scene at the start of the final episode and i thought, i recognise that tune, Shazamed it and it's For You by Khadja Bonet.Chivalry was ok, nowt amazing but i only really watched the series because i'm a quite a fan of Sarah Solemani and have been since years ago when she was in Him & Her on BBC2 (or was it BBC3?) with Russell Tovey.Comedy about a young couple living in a bedsit.

Bored last Sunday afternoon i decided to catch up on the latest episode pf Later.. with Jools Holland.I've often struggled with this show but watch it sometimes just to see if there's anything on it that grabs me and once in a while i'm pleasantly surprised. The new series has relocated to the newly refurbished theatre room at Alexandra Palace.I didn't know it had such a room but it seems so.The new Later.. set up there is a bit odd, it's apparently a 1,000 or so capacity room is that correct? Funny, because with the new shows you hardly ever see the audience. They're up in the stalls looking down on the small arena where each week 3 or 4 bands/artists are set up facing each other like the old series but this new thing just doesn't work for me.

Anyway, on last week's show the only thing that grabbed my attention were this lot.I think i may have heard this once somewhere maybe but it seemed familiar. It's Confidence Man with Holiday. The sound has a 90s feel and some almost Underworld 90s era synths sound.I'm not sure what i made of it all but i guess i liked it.The guy and the girl are a little comical with their dancing but you have to admire their enthusiasm i suppose. She reminds me of the weekend raver girls i used to see at Coventry Eclipse in the early 90s.Not the greatest dancer but energetic all the same.I think this lot are Aussies, is that correct? Read on some YouTube comments that their gigs are a great night out and loads of fun.Maybe i'd appreciate them more in a live gig with an avin' it large crowd participation rather than Later's rather sterile setting.

I think the track I posted before was MC Ade, the original source of the Bass Mechanic vocodered vocal. [And I think the "Oliver" at the very start was sampled in BM 88 too]. But the Midfield General track has some wonderful sub-bass for really annoying the neighbours!

Apparently it was out of action for 80 Years so yeah it's a bit of an unknown quantity. I remember seeing an advert for St Etienne at Ally Pally and thinking: are they big enough to play that venue these days? Then realised it was the theatre. I don't live too far away. Maybe I should apply for Later tickets! I think it was opened shortly before the pandemic so that might be another reason why it hasn't really registered.

I see what you mean. I haven't watched for ages, this is my first glimpse of the new "Later"...

Check out the Erol Alkan rework. It's a sort of dub/instrumental which kinda focuses on the "middle 8" part of the original song. And then take a listen to an old 90s track by Orbital spinoff band Golden Girls, especially around the 2 minute mark. Thoughts?

Incidentally I think they supported NO in Australia at one of the last NO gigs before Lockdown. I'm pretty sure I remember Gillian tweeting about them. Can't find that tweet but I found this:

^ Thanks for that MC Ade track.Yep deffo the sample used in Spooky and yes quite possibly that Oliver bit in BM 88, good spot , i'd never have got that.

Thanks for that link to Alexandra Palace's theatre room .I kind of like the distressed look they went for with the walls and stuff. There was a set by Bicep early last year at the 6Music festival which of course was all just online with no audience because of lockdown and it was stated that it was filmed at Alexandra Palace.I watched it and remember thinking it looked a much smaller room than the Alexandra Palace i know! But it was hard to tell for sure because it was all dark and moody.I think now it must have been filmed in this newly refurbished theatre room.Couldn't find the whole set on YouTube but Apricots from it is.I reckon this is in the theatre room....

Much as this theatre room at Ally Pally looks great i still don't think hosting shows of Later there really works.I've never been the biggest fan of the show but i think the old studio set up with the audience at floor level and almost standing around the performers worked better.

Gave the Erol Alkan mix of Confidence Man a spin, yep pretty good. And gave the Golden Girls one a listen too.Definitely an inspiration or a similarity, whether intentional or otherwise.I think i have that Kinetic track or a different mix of it on an old cassette that came free with Muzik magazine (remember that mag? Is it still going?) back in the mid 90s.Probably still have the cassette somewhere in my attic.Didn't know Golden Girls had an Orbital link or was a spin off! .

So Confidence Man supported NO in Oz just before the first Lockdown? Didn't know that.

Ah go on, just a couple more. C'mon , it's gotta be better than watching the fricking jubilee

Weird stuff going on in this vid.The eyes bit reminds me of that old 80s film The Keep.

Lots of summer fun on the water and jet skis in this one.Janet looking very very lovely indeed and throwing some great moves. She is just aceSmile
