Well sometimes you gotta discover these things for yourself ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
I think I actually listened to that Leon Bridges track, but I was thinking about the time I saw him live at the Apple Music/iTunes festival back in 2015 rather than the band that was playng beneath his vocals.

She's a bit sassy these days (on twitter too). I remember seeing Rebecca at Ben & Jerry's festival back in 2008 (13 years ago!) when she was one half of folk-pop duo Slow Cub. I really enjoyed this song by them, whch I then went out and bought (as some of us still did back in 2008).

Let's Fall Back In Love

In other news, here's a never-before heard Weatherall remix of Primal Scream's Shine Like Stars.

^ Ah ok, think I was aware of Slow Club a few years ago but had no idea what kind of stuff they did. And had no idea Self Esteem/Rebecca had been one half of them. Gave that tune a spin but it wasn’t really my cup of tea or at least not on one listen.

Gave that Primal Scream previously unreleased version of Shine Like Stars a listen too, certainly quite different from the Screamadelica version.

Speaking of Rebecca/Self Esteem on twitter, this is very Off Topic, but then we don't really have a poitics thread do we?

I hope she's wrong about this, but I fear that she isn't.

The new Hugh Jackman film, Reminiscence features a couple of songs sung by Rebecca Ferguson. She has a pretty good voice as it happens.
This is one of those songs. I guess they didn't need the whole song in the film, so she didn't record the whole song. Which is a shame. Might appeal to fans of Mazzy Starr or Lana del Rey.

Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby

It's turns out to be a cover of a song by Cigarettes After Sex; a band I haven't previously paid much attention to. I think Ms Ferguson may actually have a better voice than the band's singer below (who I think is a bloke!). But at least here's the whole thing.

RIP Richard H Kirk of Cabaret Voltaire. I’ve only got one Cabs album but I heard a fair amount of their stuff over the years. Stuff like Sensoria and Just Fascination were great and they were still knocking out new stuff recently- the Shadow Of Fear album from just last year was top form. This one of the stand out tracks IMHO from that album.

Ah Mr Kirk AKA:

Agents With False Memories, Al Jabr, Anarchia, Biochemical Dread, Bit Crackle, Blacworld, Chemical Agent, Cold Warrior, Dark Magus, Destructive Impact, Digital Terrestrial, Dollars And Cents, DR Xavier, Electronic Eye, Extended Family , Frightgod, Future Cop Movies, Harold Sandoz, International Organisation, King Of Kings, Multiple Transmission, Nine Mile Dub, Nitrogen, Orchestra Terrestrial, Outland Assasin, Papadoctrine, Pat Riot, Port Au Prince, PSI Punky Dread Allstars, Reflexiv, Richard H Kirk And The Arpeggio 13, Robots + Humanoids, Sandoz, Signals Intelligence, The Revolutionary Army (Of The Infant Jesus), The Silent Age, The Third Man, Trafficante, Ubermenschlich, Ubu Rahmen, Vasco De Mento, Wicky Wacky.

And also in groups/projects:

Acid Horse, Citrus, Sweet Exorcist, The Pressure Company, The Technocrats, XON.

Yes, I did just copy/paste that all from Discogs.

I'm familiar with Sensoria from hearing it in DJ sets by the likes of Erol Alkan and the Chems. But overall my awareness of the Cabs was pretty low. I guess you have to seek them/him out, as the mainstream isn't likely to deliver the Cabs to the ears of the casual listener.

Joe Muggs did an informative obit on Kirk in The Guardian, and even squeezes in a New Order mention.
There's no mention of how he died. I'm guessing this wasn't expected as he still seemed to be releasing new stuff.

New Order also gave Mr Kirk a mention here this week:

As part of my self-education, I'm currently listening to this:

Crikey he also released stuff under all those numerous aliases? Wow, never knew of any of those.I became aware of Cabaret Voltaire probably around the mid 80s with stuff like Sensoria on nightime Radio 1.They always seemed totally on their own journey and didn't give a fuck about pandering to mainstream or any of that shit.I got the impression that Richard H Kirk and Stephen Mallinder were quite spiky characters and didn't suffer fools gladly. The Cabs album and singles back catalogue is pretty bloody immense before even starting on any of those AKA's Richard H Kirk released stuff under. The only album i have of the Cabs is Percussion Force from the early 90s which actually isn't one of their best to be honest but I really do recommend giving their recent 2020 album Shadow Of Fear a listen though, there's some fantastic stuff on there.Lovely to see NO acknowledging Richard H Kirk's passing, Cabaret Voltaire supported Joy Division a few times i think and i think NO's Western Works demos were at the Cabs studio (?) Oh and of course the 2 Cabaret Voltaire tracks on the Salvation soundtrack i think i'd say surpass NO's contributions

Edit: just listening now to another Cabs album. From this year, BN9Drone. Over an hour of weird out drone. Some really fantastic stuff has come out of Sheffield over the years, what the fuck do they put in the water up there?

RIP Greg Gilbert of Delays. He'd been receiving treatment for Cancer for a number of years but sadly passed away this week.I was a big fan of Delays around the mid 2000s and saw them live 2 or 3 times, a great live band.Greg had an incredible falsetto vocal and was a really talented guy .I played the band's 2004 Faded Seaside Glamour album a hell of a lot back in the day.The gorgeous and optimistic melodies on a lot of the songs were just fabulous .A very sad loss.

Great all nighter at London Troxy last Saturday night.Illuminaughty presents Shamanic Tales.First big blow out night since February 2020 which, erm, was also Illuminaughty at The Troxy! Fantastic crowd in the venue last Saturday, the atmosphere was incredible and lots and LOTS of weird and beautiful people. Was trippin' me nuts off but somehow managed to Shazam this track to look up when i came back to earth.Shazam states i caught this one at 3.50am. Lovely memory of the whole night peaking when this one tore through that off the scale, fantastic soundsystem in Troxy.

Anyone seen that 2018 film Arcadia? I only became aware of it recently and managed to find it online after i missed a few showings of it on BBC4.It's no longer available on iPlayer.A surreal, disturbing, startling and even nostalgic collection of old footage of Britain and its countryside, traditions, Pagan rituals and weird connections to the land.Great music written for it by Adrian Utley of Portishead and Will Gregory of Goldfrapp.

Christmas, from the point of view of a Christmas tree. The clue to the fate of the tree comes halfway through when the mice tell the tree "Don't worry, old tree. You'll soon be warm enough" .

Merry Christmas.
