Bernard's lyrics are certainly getting more complex

Don't know that I've ever seen anyone mention this.

I'm a big fan of Meat Beat Manifesto and their 1989 debut double LP Storm The Studio. The track Re-Animator (Pt. 1) is built around the bassline from Blue Monday, although I think it's replayed, and not sampled. The track also uses Bowie's Fame and Young Americans, Public Enemy, dialogue from Hellraiser, and more.

I can hear it in the opening 20-ish seconds of the track and then it kinda comes and goes after that.

WhoSampled says there's dialogue from Ghostbusters (TV advert) and Our Man Flint (1966), but no mention of Hellraiser. Mind you they don't mention BM either.

Want to turn this into a Bizarre Musical Triangle?

The Chemcial Brothers first bonded over a mutual love of New Order and Meat Beat Manifesto.
They sampled beats from Meat Beat's God OD in Song To The Siren, at 0.02:

...and later went on to work with Bernard and produce NO of course. Not to mention recreate Temptation in their live shows.

EDIT: Also the Chems have a new track out this Friday called The Darkness That You Fear. There's a guitar riff towards the end of the track that sounds VERY Hook-ish. I'm not saying it's him (it's probably a guitar rather than a bass) but it's very much in his style.

Edited by user 21 April 2021 02:25:41(UTC)  | Reason: Hooky influence on Chems track out this Friday.

I was a casual fan.

Liked that track with the robot saying "I am Electro. My brain is bigger than yours".

This film finally came out on streaming services this week. Does it have any JD songs? Kinda. She's Lost Control sung by Anya Taylor-Joy at kareoke.
There's also a suicide theme in the film which I guess is a bit Joy Division-y.

Decent cast with Dean Charles Chapman (1917) and the above mentioned Ms Taylor-Joy (The Queens Gambit).
A film where I liked the acting more than the story. I wanted to like it, but I wouldn't watch it a second time.

Some good tunes on the soundtrack though from Fontaines DC, Slowdive and the Chems.

So Suomenlinnan used to be part of Finland but now it's part of Sweden.
Isn't there a travel ban from UK to Sweden until the end of May? How'd he get there?

Google says it's part of Finland

Interestingly this is the same Helsinki studio that Elvis Costello secretly visited just over 12 months ago to do some surprise impromptu recordings (that ended up on his Hey Clockface LP later in the year)

Let's hope that Bernard was doing something similar and that this will result in new NO songs

I remember about two weeks ago Phil did an interview where he said NO is working on something new but he can’t talk about it and he even learned the Celtic guitar or something like that for a song

Little article in The Mirror about Pat Nevin when signing for Chelsea in 1984 negotiating a deal that he could be substituted at half-time in a friendly so he could make it to the Royal Festival Hall gig. From his new autobiography. Though I think I’ve heard him tell this story before but I’m sure he said it was to make it to a Cocteau Twins gig, not a NO gig.

Saw Edgar Wright's fantastic documentary The Sparks Brothers on Saturday (and going again tomorrow). It's so fun seeing Steve and Gillian as fans. Steve mentioned that during the sessions for LWTUA they were listening to both Frank Sinatra and Sparks. There's also a good photo of Steve and Gillian with Ron and Russell during the end credits.

Had to go back and listen to NO's "cover" of Sparks' When I'm With You from Milan, 1982. That didn't go too well, did it? LoL

I'm sad I never got to see one of those chaotic '80s shows. I didn't see them live until 2001 (but I had plenty of bootlegs).

Feel your pain. Still cuts deep that in 1987 I was too young for their two licensed gigs in Perth – Canterbury Court and The Red Parrot. Which both fit the bill of chaotic 80s gigs. There I sat a few miles away, beyond gutted. And after being regular visitors prior, they never toured Oz again until 2002.

Ultimately managed to catch them in the UK before then, but those 80s gigs just seemed something else.

Although I didn’t get to experience the band live in person until 1993, I believe that, based on the hundreds of bootlegs I’ve heard, New Order were the most exciting live band to experience.

That 1982 Rolling Stone, Milan gig is an absolute beast.
The Sparks cover, plus the 5-8-6/Temptation/EGG segue.
Magnificent!
A band head and shoulders above their peers.
