Yep - it's an early fade. It starts to fade out just after Bernard starts his (vaguely incomprehensible) last vocal segment and finishes pretty much as soon as he delivers his last line.

There's actually a little bit of extra music between the first "chorus" (assuming those synth chords count as a chorus without any lyrics) and before the second "Why did you never speak my name...' verse. It's shortened on 'Low-life'

You're right! Well spotted, sir!

I wonder if there are other bits cut out of the Edit earlier in the mix; according to my iTunes, that 'lead in' to the second verse starts at 2:37 on the LP version and at 2:08 on the Edit, which seems to point to something missing earlier on in the Edit.

As you pointed out, the lead in to the second verse is shorter on the LP version (13 seconds, 2:37-2:50) compared to the Edit (25 seconds, 2:08-2:33).

If I was a cleverer man, I could do some sort of graphical analysis of the two tunes. But I'm a bit of a 'thickie', so I won't. Smile
If anyone else wants to give it a go, I'd be interested to see the results.

Seem to recall the single, slow, low synth notes right at the start play for a shorter time before Hooky's bass starts up on the Debut Magazine version. So the intro is shorter, but the music before verse two is longer, with the early fade making it shorter overall than the Low-life version

I was able to sync up the two and play them at the same time.

While the music bed is largely the same for both, the instrumental rough mix adds more guitar riffing where the vocals would start.

Also, it's obvious they edited together different takes, because the beat goes out of sync in a couple of sections of the instrumental mix, but then gets back in sync for other sections. The most obvious place is the guitar scrape into the full band. The instrumental take is not double-tracked, and runs a split second too long.

Oh, and the obvious faster fade.

Remembered I have this. Not of much interest but an official release if nothing else. Album called Like A Girl, I Want You To Keep Coming. One New Order track included - a live version of Sister Ray ( ok a cover version, not a NO song) recorded in Sao Paulo 1st Dec 1988. Bought the CD sometime around 1989 I think.

Thanks for doing this.
I should mention though that we were talking about the ‘edit’ version that was on the 10” LP given away with ‘Debut’ magazine, issue 11:

https://www.discogs.com/...-Issue-11/release/917525

rather than the ‘instrumental rough mix’ given away with the ‘Discreet Campaigns’ cassette magazine:

https://www.discogs.com/...-Campaigns/master/400971

Despite comments on that top Discogs link, the ‘edit’ version isn’t an instrumental, but a vocal version.

That being said, I hadn’t noticed the beat going out of sync. I’ll give the ‘instrumental rough mix’ another listen today and listen out for the bits you refer to. Thanks for the info..

Although I first heard about this LP whilst reading a Record Collector article in 1990-1, I only got hold of it about 2-3 years ago.

It’s a pretty intriguing little curiosity, with a distinctly odd choice for the New Order track. ‘Sister Ray’? If you wanted to include a track by the band, you’d think they’d have picked something a bit better known and more representative of their sound.

I will also say that I really hate both the cover art and the name of the compilation. It seems like they were trying to be ‘edgy’ and controversial.

Still, an interesting oddity.

Soundboard recordings? Wow. Didn't know that.

I guess it makes sense that most of the later gigs would've been recorded.

You're still Out Of My League.
I used to be a vinyl completist and only bought other formats if they had exclusives - so I didn't ''''need'''' the Regret CD but tracked down all the RIAD releases. I gave up years ago for practical reasons (storage, moving house etc), plus I was sick of London's oldie to newbie rate. I'm nowhere near as passionate as I used to be, and YouTube has the proverbiale kitchen sink.
Didn't bother with the Redpubelick CD cos there was nothing on it except the (mediocre) album, which they'd already done to death.
I got the Video 586 12" and yeah, It had As You Said on the Bside and a postcard of the same image as the Fart and Sole box shit, which came out at the same timeish. The CD just had the Aside. The funny part is I've never played it cos I didn't have a turntable and when I left the country I left it with my ''''''''family'''''''', so it's probably been chucked out. I only had the Featuremist edit and didn't hear the full version till the Be Music compilation a year ago.
I read that Record Collector article too and assumed the Sister Ray was the One I had on the Demos, Outtakes and Rarities cassette, but it ain't. I'd rather have this than another Blue Monday mic but you're right, the title and cover are trying too hard. There was also an Oz's Live and Dangerous mix (not really a mix) on the New Order The Remix boot, and of course the BBC Radio 1 Live release.

Come to think (that's my brain in reverse), I also got the JD flexi through mail order, featuring the instrumental, which wasn't compiled till Tart and Hole, plus the 1990 Cumfusion 12". In fact I had pretty much all the vinyl from JD through those iffy off-shoots to Raise the Pisser, and it'd be worth about a Grand, especially after Factory went bust, but even if it hasn't been chucked out, poor condition has an enormous effective on value. I'd only spend the money on Special Brew and whores anyway.
Then there was the Record Mirror Subculture mix, but without the actual mag, and again, it's in poor nick. I picked it up at the local flea market, with another freebie featuring the Per Shop Boys' In the Night. Arthur Baker transformed that track.

I love the fact that they couldn't even be arsed to complete the Happy One but still gave it THREE airings: Other Side of Midnight, Substance 89 and Palatine Lane. Then there was Let's Go, which they considered too weak for an album featuring Face Up, and then used for Salvation, 1963-95, US Best Of and the Brotherhood remaster. It's clear they put it on the Best Of not cos it is indeed worthy, but cos it was the closest they could get to a newbie - like Hellbent on Scrotal. It's the same mentality that puts unreleased tracks on Hits Compilations (DUH) or Move Over Miss L on The John Lennon Collection: hardly 'Plastic Ono Band' fodder but the bastards knew fans would be missing a five-year-old Bside.

Since we're talking about promos and stuff here, I have to say the radio edit for Restless remains my favourite version, so much better than both single, album and extended versions any time.

this thread might end up costing a fortune, if people start buying things,

i'll take the blame.

but i do like when people point out things that i don't have, as long as they are relatively cheap.

the brotherhood box was kind of expensive, and i'm sure the other items brought up will set
me back a lot too, but thats from me not knowing about them, or not having the funds to
get the items when they came out.

a lot of them are promo items, which would have never been in most stores anyways.

or in foreign countries, and magazines, or stores... your mileage may vary.

Yes I hope. I'm pretty sure this CD is very near another promo CD in a cardboard sleeve. I think it's a Revenge CD (true passion 2.0 sampler...).

i've taken out tons of cd's from card sleeves and put them in other cases,
and with other cd's, it's driving me crazy trying to find them now.

especially with the 3 inch ones.

luckily i keep all the new order ones together, so i only have to go through 100 cd singles, or more to find something.
i don't mix up electronic, revenge, new order, bernard sumner, etc. then it would be a real mess.

luckily i haven't lost an actual cd, i just can't find where i put them. ha ha.

now, with these posts, i'm forced to go back and dig them out.
