This digital version must have coincided with the 40th anniversary ruby vinyl reissue. I hadn't spotted it until today. No bonus material and no indication as to who remastered it (I assume Frank Arkwright?) I opted for a FLAC copy from Qobuz. It doesn't sound a million miles away from the 2007 master, to be honest. A tiny bit louder overall. The remastered audio for the upcoming JD reissues are also beginning to appear on certain digital stores for pre-order I.e. TransmissionThey've left the 2007 mastering of UP on most services so if you do buy it double-check it has (2019 Digital Remaster) in the title: 7digital Apple Music Amazon Google Play Spotify Qobuz

I assume the singles are using Arkwright's 2015 remasters used for the 2xLP edition of Substance.

Although these new ones are explicitly marked as (2020 Digital Remaster) and the Arkwright remaster on 2015's Substance reissue was the same as + - box-set from 2010. Re-badging a 2010 remaster ten years on would be a little cheeky...

Oh, Factory. Never change. I just compared my original Factory pressings of Substance on LP, CD, and cassette. While the CD fades out, the LP and cassette use the "full mix" with no fade, same as the 2015 remaster of Substance. The full mix was also used on the Martin compilation in 1991, then showed up on the Heart And Soul box. But the 12" released in 1980 has a fade, same as the Substance CD. The plot thickens.
1980 - FACTUS 2 - fades
1988 - Fact250 - full mix 1988 - Fact250c - full mix 1988 - Facd250 - fades (same for US and Japan CDs)
1991 - Martin compilation - full mix on CD for the first time
1992 - London reissue of Substance on CD - full mix
1997 - Heart And Soul - full mix
2008 - The Best Of Joy Division - full mix
2011 - Total (From Joy Division To New Order) - full mix, but faded early to be the same length as the version 1980-1988

Plus Minus too, previously unfaded, full length mix but now with fade. With the two Substances and other represses in the late 80s Factory introduced a few errors that we have struggled to fully identify and correct in later years. SLC being yet another. I'm pretty sure that this other SLC was and is an unfinished mix that should never have been used. Keyboard parts are missing, plus there's a rhythmic sound absent throughout (a kind of shuffling). It'll be a similar situation to IALP and its not quite finished mix that was used over and over again throughout the 90s and even up until the RSD 12". Edited by user 11 June 2020 21:52:33(UTC)

So does this mean the original 12" release contained the full mix, but with a fade out? Meaning the original CD version of Substance actually featured the correct 12" version (and the tape/vinyl didn't)? And therefore the "unfinished mix" you mention is the one found on '24 Hour Party People' soundtrack? (a version that also fades). Regardless of this confusion, my favourite version will always be the full mix without the fade (found on 'Heart and Soul'.

I'm not exactly sure of every appearance, by 'full' I think that means longer. It has less going on within it, less keyboards being the most obvious.

The 1992 re-release by London Records features a new longer version than the original 12" mix of "She's Lost Control" (also found on Factory compilation Martin and Heart And Soul), while the other editions have the version featured on the "Atmosphere" single. Re-released again in 1999/2000, and remastered in 2015. Found it here: https://www.discogs.com/...on-Substance/master/4912 |

Later Factory UK pressings, at least on CD, of Substance also include the ”non fade” mix.
I assume this applies to all formats, that only the first pressings in 1988 have the original mix as on the Facus2 12”? Was there a slight dropout or something that caused them to re-cut it with (probably unintentionally) a different mix?
