Well, to be fair, the song was still about in 1984. So it’s not like it’s set in 1982, with the song not coming out until 1983.
1983 and 1984 ain’t too far away from each other, either. I’d imagine that Blue Monday would still have been played in most clubs and radio stations in 1984.

It’s difficult to gain much from that teaser, but I guess they just wanted a song that summed up the decade; to make people aware that the film in set in that period.

And as for comparisons with Ready Player One, we’ve no idea how, or indeed if, the song will be used in the final film.
It’s a teaser. That’s all.

I'm inclined to agree with Perspex Orange.
There's no rule that says a film based in 1984 has to have all its music from that year. I don't remember Ready Player One being strictly a 1983 movie.
Incidentally the track spent 27 weeks in the lower echelons of the UK Top 100 in 1984, and I suspect that was the same in other parts of the world too. I remember going to school discos in '85 & '86 and hearing it played.

As for whether it was used better in Ready Player One, how do you know -1, have you seen WW 1984?

I've actually just watched the full trailer. It was part of a live event streamed on twitter/periscope a few minutes ago. I can't see it uploaded to Youtube yet but I'm sure it won't be long.

And guess what? The trailer is FULL of Blue Monday. Mostly not NO's version but a cinematic/score version, with military drums, big guns and even revolver shots semi-replicating the drums from BM. There's also a bit of NO at the end. And it all sounds immense.
The film isn't out til June but I honestly think this is going to connect the track to a whole new bunch of teenage movie-goers if it's as prominent in the film as it is in the trailer. They've gone BM crazy with this.

*EDIT* Here it is. THE WHOLE TRAILER IS BLUE MONDAY (although only a little bit is NO).

Yep. Blue Monday was (incredibly) still in the top 40 until 20/11/83. So was still ‘current’ only 5-6 weeks or so before 1984 arrived. Therefore, the song is very much of the era that the film is covering.

Watched the trailer. Looks great.
The song works really well. Love when the New Order version kicks in. Sounds golden.

I doubt it.

As a song, Blue Monday evokes the time period without sounding cheesy - try and imagine the trailer cut to any of 1984's top 10 singles:

When Doves Cry by Prince
What's Love Got to Do with It by Tina Turner
Say Say Say by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson
Footloose by Kenny Loggins
Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) by Phil Collins
Jump by Van Halen
Hello by Lionel Richie
Owner of a Lonely Heart by Yes
Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr.
Karma Chameleon by Culture Club

Blue Monday already sounded more futuristic than anything of the time, and it's been continually reworked, covered, and referenced, which has kept it in the public's consciousness. It's still a contemporary song. Plus, it has long instrumental passages so they're not trying to cut dialogue around lyrics. And it lends itself to orchestration well.

Incidentally, the music arranged for trailers is often just that - for the trailer. Blue Monday proper will likely be on the soundtrack, but not this orchestral version. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 used an incredible remix/orchestral version of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain, but the soundtrack used the standard version.

i doubt if the song will be used in the movie, doesn't really look
like there's a place in the movie for it.

anyways, yes, they beefed it up, and used parts of the original and orchestral versions
in the trailer.

as far as the 1984 exposure goes, it always bothers me when a movie or trailer uses
music that isn't from the correct time period, or is just flat out wrong.

this virgin airlines video for june 22,1984, has a guy holding big country's steeltown album, which came out on 19th of october in the UK, must be time travellers:

anyways, maybe the song will be on the soundtrack, we'll see.

Off the top of my head the four tracks in bold were very specifically featured in/written for films of the time (3 of the 4 are the names of the films).
I could imagine Prince's Let's Go Crazy working quite well. I wouldn't mind a bit of Owner Of A Lonely Heart in the film somewhere.

Some other tracks from the time that might work:
Tears For Fears: Mothers Talk (album version - v dramatic)
Pat Benatar: Love Is A Battlefield ( I enjoyed "We Belong" in Deadpool 2, albeit one of the many tongue in cheek tune choices)
Billy Idol: Rebel Yell
Animotion: Obsession
Eurythmics: Here Comes The Rain Again (or y'know Sweet Dreams if you want to jump back a couple of years)
Frankie: Two Tribes (all those remixes and instrumental sections)
But yeah I get why BM works, I really do. Maybe we'll get some of the above songs on the film soundtrack too...

Noooo!

I can't argue with your logic/example here, but as agent Mulder might say: I want to believe.
I'd love to think that the orchestral "score" parts might be used beyond this trailer. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Yeah, I noticed that! :D

I think what I was trying to say is Blue Monday works because it's largely anonymous (most people have heard the song, not many people can tell you who it is). Prince would be cool because he ruled 1984, but then the trailer becomes about Prince, not about Wonder Woman. Also, Blue Monday has aged gracefully, and the rest of those songs have not. It's a fine line between referencing the decade and dropping into cheesy nostalgia.

Regardless, this looks like the best thing DC has offered!

Yep. It’ll be Fine Time. Barney in full ‘gurn mode’.

They actually featured the song on the episode shown last week. They played a couple of minutes of the video. So, nothing major.

already visited 3 different links for the WW trailer on Youtube. in each link, there's a hand full of youngsters asking what song is being played in the trailer. really wished they used the regular 83 version, than this remix(which i think is awful) version.

It's not a remix.
BM 83 (re-edited) is at the end of the trailer.
Prior to that, it's two cover versions. A synthy one near the start (don't know who that's performed by).
And an orchestral version in the middle. The orchestral version is apparently by L'Orchestra Cinématique.

Quote:
Check out our epic cover of Blue Monday by New Order which features in the official trailer for Wonder Woman 1984. What do you think of the trailer? Enjoy!!

If you are wanting to use this track for your own project please email us at orchestracinematique@gmail.com. The fact that this appears to have been pre-made doesn't bode well for my hopes that it might have been recorded for/by the film makers for the film itself...
*BIG EDIT* Actually I misunderstood what this video is. It's not the actual recording used in the trailer. They have clarified in YouTube comments that it's inspired by the trailer. Which means it must have been put together within about a day (!).

Gave that Atomic Blonde film a try tonight on Channel 4.Right at the start, Blue Monday 88 plays. So far so what, another film another use of BM.What caught my ear next though was what sounded like the intro to the live version of Atmosphere that NO do these days. That bass drum thump and a bit of keyboard.Hang on i thought, they've used a live version of NO doing Atmosphere as a piece of music in this film? But then the unmistakable voice of David Bowie kicks in.I recognised the song when he starts singing the "putting out fire with gasoline " line but not the name of it so googled it.It's his song Cat People (Putting Out Fire) .A song of his from 1982 i think?

So, did NO take the intro from that song and incorporate it into as the intro to their recent years live version of Atmosphere? It's their nod to Bowie? That bass drum thump at the start is identical.Or am i the only person that didn't know this? I didn't get the memo?

Oh and i turned Atomic Blonde off after about half an hour, just found it all a bit meh.

Check out the intro to David Bowie's song Cat People. Is it not identical to the intro to NO's live version of Atmosphere???

edit: listened to Atmosphere from last year's Bluedot, yep sounds like they sampled the intro complete.

Wow! Yep, you're right. Had never noticed that. Good spot.

I liked Atomic Blonde. A pretty good, stylish action flick. There's a pretty great fight that starts in a building and carries over into a car, IIRC.
I'm a sucker for a good female action hero and Charlize Theron, with this performance and Fury Road (awesome film!), really fits the bill.

David Bowie's Cat People (Putting Out Fire) was released in 1982.The keyboard notes at the start are kind of similar to the keyboard notes at the start of Atmosphere (released of course in 1980).Was Bowie giving a nod to the JD song? And then after Bowie died in 2016 NO started using a sample of the intro to Cat People in their live version of Atmosphere in tribute to him and a cheeky "Yes David, we clocked that you gave a nod to Atmosphere at the start of Cat People" ???? I looked up Atmosphere live on the NOMC15 (2015) live disc and that intro wasn't used at that gig or that period. So they started incorporating the sample after Bowie's death in 2016?

Compare intros:

David Bowie - Cat People

New Order - Atmosphere live 2019

I went back and listened to NOMC 2015 - couldn't hear it. Then I googled Alexandra Palace 2018, the last time I saw 'em live, and yep there it is:

You have clearly been paying closer attention to the live intro of Atmosphere than the rest of us between 2016(?) and now. Gold star, Mr Fotze...Singing Detective.

Cat People sometimes turns up on my phone listening choices as part of a 2ManyDJ's mix (this one dedictated to drummer Keith Forsey who played on many famous artists/songs in the 70s & 80s). But it turns out the intro isn't in that DJ mix...

There are four of these 2x2 mixes from 2ManyDjs' that they did for Apple Beats1, I just used a youtube ripper to nab them all from the YT uploads for my phone. And now I've gone completely off topic.

Slightly back to the topic, Atomic Blonde was watchable but inessential. The kick-ass glamourous hit-woman thing has been done before (Nikita/ La Femme Nikita) and indeed done more recently (2019's Anna). But I like Charlize, and John Goodman (despite his real life politics), and plonking the story in the period immediately before the fall of the Berlin wall added something to it. Agree with Perpex Orange re: the action sequences too.

PS: Ah it looks like Mr Detective has posted since I started this post...

Thanks Debaser, and perspexorange. Nice to know I’m not the only one who didn’t get the memo on this.

Strange thing is I could have sworn NO had used that slow bass drum thump on the Atmosphere live intro longer than recent years. I thought I’d heard it live at one of their gigs before Bluedot 2019. But I didn’t see them live between after November 2015 and Bluedot last year. So if I’d witnessed them doing that intro live before Bluedot it would have been before Bowie died in 2016. I guess I must have just heard it on YouTube or something in last couple of years if they didn’t start using it til after Bowie’s passing.

Yeah I think I agree with you Debaser about Atomic Blonde- watchable but not essential.Ill watch the rest of it one evening.

Collaboration with Iggy Pop. Incorporating Lou Reed’s Street Hassle into Temptation. Now incorporating Bowie’s Cat People into Atmosphere. They’ve successfully pinched from all the legends of 70s art rock! Ian would be proud. Big Grin
