C’mon En-ger-land!
Am sitting here wearing my 1990 England blue strip, just like Mr Sumner in the World In Motion video.
Hope it’s lucky.

Edit:

The obligatory World In Motion was also played at the end of the programme in preparation for England’s next match against Belgium. The last time the two nation’s met in a World Cup was 1990, so there were various clips from that tournament, played out to WIM.

Yep, we watched England v Panama in the pub, a fun afternoon; seemed like we were cheering an England goal every five minutes. Though I was very drunk. Day Of The Lords before the game caught my attention! Though I was trying to make a connection what the song had to do with the upcoming match and the England team, only thing I could connect was the “Where will it end?” lyric. Where will it indeed end for England? Probably in a penalty shootout in the Colombia game on Tuesday.

If I listen at all to World In Motion it’s the b -side, kind of prefer that version now, never was completely clear on who is doing the “ You can hold and give” and “ you must defend and attack” parts etc on that version . It’s obviously on the “ My name is John Barnes, what’s yours?” and “ get round the back “ it’s Keith Allen but I never had Allen down as good voice impersonator to do those Steve McMahon, Des Walker (?)parts.

I’ve always assumed it was Keith Allen.

He can certainly do accents and seemed to be in the mood to do impressions at the time:

Well...hmm...maybe.A just about passable geordie accent from Keith Allen there. But i'm still not convinced unless proven otherwise he did impersonations of England footballers on the WIM b-side in the parts where there's different voices doing a line each of the John Barnes rap that is on the A-side.I don't know...where is it factually stated that Keith Allen really did do those parts? Not that it matters! It's all pub quiz trivia. Just curious.

But anyway, whatever, but i'd never seen that clip before, that montage of all the Madchester bands and stuff circa 89/90 to the soundtrack of that Paul Oakenfold remix of the Mondays' WFL certainly brought back some memories of that era.

Just found the following quote in Hooky’s ‘Substance’ book (I knew I’d read something somewhere):

“Relegated (good footballing analogy there) to the B-side, if you listen to his version, it does sound unfinished, although it does feature Keith and my mate Richard “Dickie” Chappell, the tape-op from Real World, on the half rap, a valiant effort.”

It’s on page 1055 of the digital version.

Yeah. That clip is quite good. The New Order bit seems to be a collection of 2-3 other clips taken from other Granada news articles during the year.
I have a copy of the original programme where Steve makes various football puns, which was broadcast in February 1990. This also includes a short Sumner interview that was not included in the Christmas show. However, I hadn’t seen the Hooky or Keith Allen interview bits before so I’m not sure whether these had ever been broadcast previously.

Yep that sounds more like what happened though Hooky does have habit of making up stories.I don't have the digital version of Hooky's book and can't recall if that is in the hardback but upon flicking through Bernard's book there on page 229 is the same version of events as Hooky remembers.Bernard, like Hooky, says it's this Richard "Dickie" Chappell character; "a born again Christian" states Barney ,doing those bizzarre footballers voices for the rap on the b side. To quote Barney " So that's Dickie the Christian rapping on the b side in his lilting, fey Bath accent"

This appears to confirm my long held belief that it's not Keith Allen doing those footballer impersonations ( though it's obviously him on the "My name's John Barnes, what's yours?" and i assume him again on "Get round the back!" ?

That photoshop of Ian Curtis reminds me of watching on tv an England World Cup or Euro qualifier some years ago. They were playing Lithuania I think and during the teams lining before the match for the national anthems , the camera panned along the stern and grim looking Lithuania squad and the commentator said “ They look like Joy Division “

That's quite a memory you've got there, Mr Fotzepolitic.

They put a nice little factory logo on Ian's top as well, which you can't see in the embedded twitter images. If you want to see the full image you have to click on the tweets to open them in a new tab and then right click to view image or open image in new tab (depending on your browser). So they look like this. BTW the ShadowParty one looks kinda sinister IMO.

Also played before San Francisco date on Friday.

It was nice that the sound engineer turned it up compared to the previously played tracks. The crowd really seemed to appreciate that.

Barry Keoghn, who you might know from Dunkirk or The Killing Of A Sacred Deer in American Animals. A heist movie about university students who...don't really know what they're doing. Substance T-shirt appears around 1hr 40 into the film. UK release date: 7th September. It's actually a true story, with the real characters popping up as talking heads during the film.

Missed it too. Had a look to see if I could get last night’s 10pm Sky News on catch up but turns out they don’t make their news shows available on that. There is a minute or so online of Barney talking about mental health issues and a dig at the coalition UK government after the banking crash not funding the NHS enough for mental health.

Thanks for posting this.

It looks like there might be two clips; the one you posted and a 1 minute clip which is just an edit of the first one (Barney mentioning under-funding etc.).

Unless there is more? Sky tend to put news on a loop with some bits being repeated and other different bits being shown at other times. I wonder if they showed another clip.

Anybody know for definite?
