Seen as if I got a good response to my request for radio interviews / documentaries, I thought I'd try my luck here with the following rare video material.

I've pulled this list together of stuff I'm missing from a load of old bootleg trading lists that I've had filed away since the early 90s:

1981 Toronto TV, 1981 (JD/NO item)
17/01/1983 'Riverside', BBC TV, 17.01.83 (visit to the Haçienda, interview with Ben Kelly)
13/09/1983 'Loose Talk', Channel 4, 13/09/83 (interview with Charles Sturridge re 'Confusion' video)
20/09/1983 'Loose Talk', Channel 4, 20/09/83 ('Is Factory Fascist?' debate with Tony Wilson)
23/12/1983 'The Tube', Channel 4, 23/12/83 (interview with Arthur Baker re 'Confusion)
04/05/1984 'Countdown', Dutch TV, 04/05/84 (Confusion) (does this exist?)
27/01/1986 'Villa Tempo', BRT1, 27/01/86 (interview with Sumner, Hook & Gretton)
29/01/1986 ?, Channel 1, 29/01/86 (interview)
02/1986 ?, BBC 2 Belfast, 02/86 (interview)
18/10/1986 'Juice', BBC Wales, 18/10/86 (interview with Morris & Gilbert)
11/1986 MTV, 11/86 (interview with Sumner)
10/1987 'Club MTV', MTV, 10.87 (interview with Hook)
1987 'Music Box', Super Channel, 1987 (interview)
02/01/1988 'Night Network', ?, 02/01/88 (interview with Morris & Gilbert)
01/1988 MTV, 01/88 (interview with Morris & Gilbert)
20/01/1988 'Juice', BBC Wales, 20/01/88 (interview with Hook)
04/03/1988 New Zealand TV, 04/03/88 (unknown)
19/03/1988 'Snub TV', 19/03/88 (interview) (different from interview on 27/03/89?) (does this exist?)
10/06/1988 'The Other Side Of Midnight', Channel 4, 10/06/88 (Wilson/Slonimsky interview + Atmosphere video)
07/1988 'Network 7', Channel 4, 07/88 (True or False item about Curtis)
18/09/1988 '120 Minutes - X-Ray', MTV, 18/09/88 (interview)
11/01/1989 MTV, 11/01/89 (interview with Hook)
29/03/1989 'Rapido', BBC TV, 29/03/89 (interview)
05/02/1990 'Snub TV', BBC TV, 05/02/90 (Revenge)
14/02/1990 'Granada Tonight', Granada TV, 14/02/90 (interview)
27/08/1992 'Celebration - The Mancunian Way', Granada TV, 27/08/92 (programme on Manchester music; not the earlier 'Madchester' one from 1990)
02/10/1993 'The OZone', BBC TV, 02/10/93 (interview with Sumner) (not the 'Ruined In A Day' video shoot)
02/1994 'MTV News', MTV, 02/94 (interview with Sumner at Brit Awards)
1995 'Ten Of The Best', VH-1, 1995 (interview with Hook)

Has anyone seen any of the above? Do these actually exist? Any and all information greatly received.
Any copies of this material even more greatly received! Smile

Crikey i don't remember many or any of them except the Rapido March 1989 one which i have on VHS i think but which i would of thought can easily be found on YouTube anyhow, it's not that rare at all, surely?

Think there was a discussion on here a while back about the existence or not of (or if they even played it) Confusion from Veronica's Countdown, can't recall what the conclusion about it was.

There are 38 minutes of the rushes from that Rapido interview, you can buy them on the link above from the French National Archives.

Thanks for the response, Fotz.

The Rapido one I’ve listed isn’t the well known interview from 03/11/88. Instead, there was apparently another interview (may be with the whole band, individual member, splinter band etc.) in March ‘89.

I’m doubtful that that particular interview even exists though. Chances are, someone mislabelled their VHS tape and the interview they are referring to is actually the main 11/1988 one.

I’m also sceptical that the Sumner OZone interview exists. The only OZone ones I certainly remember seeing is the RIAD video shoot one, the Other Two one and a very short clip where they interview various musicians about what they think of Michael Jackson. This latter clip includes one with Hooky, possibly interviewed during the RIAD shoot, stating that he thought MJ was a little messed up. Perhaps the Sumner one I’ve listed is a similar ‘vox pop’ type short clip.

As regards Confusion on Countdown, I believe it does exist, but it might not have been broadcast. I remember that discussion you mentioned and someone posted the following link to what was recorded during the session:

http://reelinintheyears....arch/?stage=show_results

It states that there was two attempts at an interview, three attempts at Blue Monday and two of Confusion.
There are certainly two versions of the interview out there in the wild.
There’s also two versions of Blue Monday (one with a false start) available on the ‘net. I also have a bit of the missing third attempt of BM. This is a very short clip, presumably broadcast a few weeks after the main performance. The (same) presenter says something like ‘bands can come into the studio and record tracks, like New Order did recently...’, followed by said different performance of BM.

It may not be a definite third take but it certainly contains some different camera angles / vision mix. It’s a very short clip (about a minute IIRC) and in pretty bad quaility.

So, it seems likely that Confusion does exist, but it might be that it was never broadcast and no one’s seen it.
However, as mentioned, I have (on those possibly spurious trading lists) a listing that says ‘04/05/84 - Veronica’s Countdown - Confusion’ with a run time of 5 mins. So it looks like someone had this to trade in the early 90s.

Wish I’d traded for that particular item now when I had the chance. 😞

Brilliant. Thanks Johnny. They look like they’re from the 11/88 interview.
I will give them a good look when I get home. Looks good.

Oh i seee, sorry i misunderstood you. When you stated 29/3/89 Rapido i thought you meant the one where it starts with driving down the street to sound of BLT 12" then has Bernard, Gillian & Steve walking in countryside then interviewed on rocky top somewhere and Bernard "Rock was great but then it just started repeating itself" , Steve in front of computer and gear in small room, shots of in Hacienda with bit of Tony Wilson etc and then at end Hooky with opinion on U2 etc.I first saw that a couple of months after Technique came out, not a couple of months before, so i remember it as being March 1989.So was the first time i saw it actually a repeat showing of that episode of Rapido in March 1989 and it had originally been shown on 3/11/88? Or do you mean the interviews etc were done on 3/11/88?

My fault - I wasn't very clear.
Yeah - the programme you've described is the one that I had labelled as 03/11/88.

However, I think I might have solved the mystery. Looking at the BBC Genome project, it appears that the programme in March 1989 may have been a repeat of the November 1988 one. Presumably the tape lists that I have have labelled with the date of the repeat.

The programme for 17/11/88 (on BBC 1 at 23:30) (note: not the 3rd, as I thought) has the following description:
'Real stories of rock 'n roll from a French perspective. Tonight: New Order in Manchester, Nick Cave in Paris, Randy Newman in Los Angeles and plenty of surprises from the contemporary music scene.'

And the programme for 29/03/89 (on BBC 2 at 18:45) sates:
'Antoine de Caunes presents the French perspective on rock 'n' roll. Tonight's programme features New Order in Manchester, Nick Cave in Paris and Randy Newman in Los Angeles.'.

Got to be the same programme. So that's that issue solved. :-) I'll knock the March programme off my 'want' list.

However, looking at the Rapido listings on the website, another 'problem' has reared its head:

The listing for 03/11/88 states the following:
'Rapido this week casts un oeuil sur Boy George in Paris, New Order in Manchester and Elvis, Elvis everywhere. Also featured are the Florentine bands Moda and Violent Eves. The rise of Folkettes Tanita Tikaram, Tracy Chapman and Michelle Shocked. '

This programme went out two weeks before the 17th edition. Although the New Order description is the same, the rest of the bands appearing seem to be completely different. You would think that, being only 2 weeks apart and on the same day / time slot, the two Nov '88 programmes can't have been the same episode repeated. On the other hand, it seems a bit weird to cover New Order twice in the space of two weeks.

I'm wondering whether the listings got a bit confused, either in the original 'Radio Times' listings or in the Genome project.

Anybody know for definite? Did the band feature in the programmes for both 03/11/88 and 17/11/88? If not, what day were they featured; 3rd or 17th?

So as far as I can piece together, I have the band appearing on the following episodes of Rapido:

12/87 Live performance of True Faith from Paris 08/12/87. No interview footage as far as I know. As far as I know, this was only on French TV (i.e. not in UK)
03/11/88 (or 17/11/88) Interview / documentary with band at Alderley Edge.
17/11/88 (or 03/11/88) Possible other interview / documentary (probably spurious)
29/03/89 Repeat of 03/11/88 (or 17/11/88) in the UK
14/02/90 Revenge interview / documentary (I have this in both English & French languages)
20/02/91 Short interview with Arthur Baker about New Order (contains some footage from 11/88 programme).

Anybody else have any of the rare stuff I'm missing?

Looks like my link / image didn't work so here (hopefully) is a screen grab of what was recorded for Veronica's Countdown in '83:

https://ibb.co/b3se3n

So, it certainly looks like Confusion was recorded and, if the bootleg trading list I got off someone in the 90s is correct, it is seems to be out there in New Order fandom. Would absolutely LOVE to see this.

PS Can't edit my previous posts; keeps marking them as Spam. Frown

Yep the Rapido that i first saw on 29/3/1989 must have been a repeat though i'd never known that.Though i do recall thinking how the narrator says "Their forthcoming album Technique" at some point i found not very good journalism seeing has it had been out a few months by then.So the narrator was correct at the time of original broadcast 3/11/88.This 29/3/1989 repeat is probably what led to confusion over dates of episodes and versions.

There was an OZone interview with the other two and Bernard circa 1990 - also an MTV special sameish year (not the 1993 Past Present and Future).

Ah. Thanks.
Sorry - just to get this straight, was this one interview with Steve, Gillian and Bernard, circa 1990?
Or was it two interviews; one with Steve and Gillian (the one previously mentioned by me, broadcast in 1993) and one with Bernard, circa 1990?

It was an interview with Andy Crane and The Other Two (together) and Bernard (vaguely together). Must be mid 90 cos they talk about Revenge and World In Motion.
The 93 one was for RIAD.
Also Rapido on Revenge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlUJEJ7l5rE - LP's still shit though. Even the pathetic underachievement of The Other Spew garnered the occasional gem (Movin' On).

Ah yes. Had completely forgotten about that one. As soon as you said Andy Crane, I could picture him there, silly over-sized baseball cap on his head, trying to look cool...

Thanks for the Revenge link. That doc also went out in the UK, with English dub. I have both versions. I really liked Revenge, but know I'm in the minority. Don't judge me.

Talking of Revenge, if anyone has video footage of the Junction, Cambridge 23/04/90 or Riverside Newcastle 19/04/90, I'd be grateful for a copy. Apparently the video exists somewhere.

Disagree, pineapple, and the song about breaking someone's face, and the 4 ugly sailors, and the nice ballad song were and are stll solid achievements , better than anything and everything in metal, country or rap ,or Hawaiian music.

Still a poor effort though, even Paul Lester and Hooky thought so.
