One of Stephen Morris' choices for the Synth Hero radio show is now being used in a perfume advert I see.

GusGus have always seemed to me to be more of an Icelandic collective rather than a defined band, what with all their personel changes. Tracks like Polyesterday and Ladyshave (funny lyrics!) had an indie pop feel to them which got them played on Xfm (now Radio x). Whilst the likes of Dance You Down and David were full-on club bangers, both of which I bought on 12". And then there was GusGus v T-World whose track, Purple was highly addictive. At some point I think the T-World guys became core members of GusGus. But it's all a bit cofusing...

Anyone seen Duncan "son of Bowie" Jones new film Mute?
A deeply flawed film that has been savaged by the critics. I thought the first hour was pretty easy to watch actually, even if it wasn't entirely clear where the film was going. The second hour was more challenging, especially as we got to know some of the characters better. Not too many likeable ones in this flick. One of those films that I think is fun to discuss and ruminate over afterwards even it you didn't really enjoy it at the time. There's some nice music score on it, mind you.

Anyone else into this Jon Hopkins guy? Apparently he's been around a few years now and has made some fierce music.I only became aware of him recently and his Immunity album from a few years ago. He's got a new album coming out called Singularity.....hmmmm... This KEXP thing from a few years ago... that first track; i don't know what he's doing with those 2 or 3 little boxes that appear to have some kind of touch pad/screen but they make some great sounds. How he does it all is pretty bloody unfathomable but mesmerizing.

edit: oh just read he did the soundtrack for that film Monsters.Really liked that film (the sequel maybe not so much)

Radiohead- Daydreaming.Possibly the song for the 00s generation that was the 70s/early 80s Joy Division's Atmosphere 1980, except the 00s generation prefer looking at their phones for updates

Been listening to a lot of Ennio Morricone in the car lately. This, the music to the finale of Once Upon A Time In The West. The final duel scene. This has to be what New Order were taking inspiration from when they tried to create a Morricone styled track with Elegia. The way the guitar crashes in like a bull in a china shop at 1.41 is so like how Bernard's does on Elegia. Also, that repeating insistent undercurrent in the music is echoed in Elegia.

Not sure i ever saw Once Upon A Time In The West.I must have i guess.Probably saw it as a kid on tv one long Sunday afternoon in the 70s.

Today's interesting fact about the Spice Girls
Geri's nickname was Ginger, and if you take this nickname, reverse the syllables, and remove the outer letters of what is now the second syllable, it spells her first name. This does not apply to any other Spice Girl. I have tried.

Wow, never knew Colourbox did any TV appearances. This looks like that German TV Music Convoy thing that New Order also did Thieves Like Us on in the mid 80s.Basically music tv off the back of a lorry. This Colourbox song The Moon Is Blue off their 1985 'Colourbox' album i remember Gary Davies bizarrely ,though credit to him, trying to big up on his lunchtime Radio 1 show in summer 1985.Probably the only 4AD song ever that Gary Davies gave airtime to. Colourbox's eponymous album 1985 album featured the incredible Arena; possibly one of the greatest songs ever and which i'm sure i've posted on here on more than one occasion over the years so won't post again right now.I think two of Colourbox's original members have sadly died in the last few years- Ian Robbins in 2014 and one of the Young brothers, Steven, in 2016.Colourbox's 1985 album on 4AD was very, very forward looking back then- Sleepwalker, Just Give 'em Whiskey,Moon Is Blue,Suspicion,Manic,You Keep Me Hanging On (Motown cover and covered also later on after Colourbox by Kim Wilde of all people) and Arena. All just brilliant songs.Soon after the album they released the great Colourbox Officlal World Cup Theme and the 12" Baby I Love You So/ Looks Like We're Shy One Horse/Shoot Out 12".All incredible stuff.

The Spice Girls saved me from alcoholism. Hear me out. It was when I read alcohol abuse causes impotence. Like any male, I thought, Fuck liver disease, fuck bankruptcy, fuck destroying my few remaining brain cells; the very notion I may never again shoot my wad over 'Too Much' was - that's right - Too Much. And I say that with all due respect to 'Say You Will Be There.' Thank you, Spice.

I hope you enjoy this (from the clearance sale). But don't share it if you shoot your wad over it.

spice egg

BTW is there a Spice Girls forum out there somewhere where you bang on about New Order?
I'm guessing the other foumites would be women in their late 20's and early 30's who wouldn't approve of your drooling discourse.

Still a great song.Always thought the close up/fades and merges of the girls in the video backdrop were an English 80s Indie bleakness yet still vaguely psychedelic counterpoint to the more commercialised, sales chasing close up/fades and merges in The Bangles late 80s California dreampop in their video to Eternal Flame.Something in the permission to that taken for granted late 20th Century vague out/daydreaming has been taken away in the world we now live in.

Today's interesting fact about the Spice Girls
Scary Spice is not actually very scary. In a recent poll, the 'scariest movie scenes' included Shining, Carrie, Saw and Hostel, but not one moment of Spiceworld. I myself can watch Spiceworld, say 'I am not afraid' and place my free hand on my heart.
Today's interesting fact about the Bangles
Su Hoffs was the first ever woman who could remain fully clothed and still earn my man-milk. Well done! And I say that with all due respect to Melanie C.

Yet another 'favourite Spice Girl' survey and it's always the same. I argue Melanie C for her superior vocal, songwriting and dancing skills; development from teenybopper into respected recording artiste; commitment to important social (particularly women's) issues and charities such as comic relief; delivering two-hour, note-perfect gigs and a consistent back catalogue covering a wide variety of musical genres; coping fabulously with professional comedians on panel shows; combining respect for the fans with the need for privacy; staying true to her unique style and sex appeal without becoming a cliched media puppet; best of all, surviving 22 years in the biz without degenereating into arrogance (Posh), vulgarity (Madonna), excess (Winehouse) or grotesque plastic surgery (pretty much everyone). Then some Einstein counters, Geri cos tits.
