Hi there,

It's been a long time...

Don't think this was discussed before. Those digital remasters of 2015, are they any better than the 2008 remasters?

I purchased the Republic 2015 remaster recently, and it's better than the original master, but Republic wasn't remastered in 2008.

The 2008 remasters of the Factory albums, without being wonderful, are imo satisfactory in that they add flesh to the thin-sounding originals without brickwalling them. Yet I'd like to know if the 2015 Factory albums remasters are better than their 2008 remasters, and if the WFTSC 2015 remaster is better than the (awful) original master. Is it correct than GR hasn't been remastered yet?

Tx

Seem to vaguely recall reports from people whose ears can pick up on these types of things that the 2015 remasters are better than the 2008 ones. The only remaster of the 2008 ones I purchased were the Power, Corruption & Lies vinyl and the Low-Life vinyl. Not sure if they were released sometime after the CD versions of the 2008 remasters but I only bought them just last year.

I think Get Ready's 2015 reissue was a remaster. But it's a bloody awful remaster, or at least the vinyl edition which I bought last year is. Really, really fricking quiet. Terrible.Or maybe it isn't remastered. Feck knows.

Agreed. The vinyl was woeful.

Thoughts on the Republic 2015 remaster? I was a little let down i have to say. I'm not saying i wanted it super compressed and brickwalled to fuck but its pretty quiet compared to the rest of the catalogue. Also i think they could've reissued it on a double vinyl. Might have helped slightly.

If they remastered Rest Of it would sound shit but the sound would be great.
I never bother with remasters cos I never hear much difference. I remember Owen Morris' 11.93 work for 94's Electronic rerelease - sounded exactly the same. It's diferrent with remixes.

The difference between the original Factory mastering of Electronic and the later Parlophone CD is like night and day. Suggest you buy new speakers, headphones or cotton buds Tongue

For the most part remastering remixes is mostly pointless unless they are truly remarkable; something like Reunited In A Day would probably qualify.

Although the version on (The Rest Of) is perfectly adequate for what it is.

Which version of 'Electronic' do you think is "night", and which "day"?

I included 'Reailty' on a mix CD a few weeks ago, and realised the '94 remastered version was louder on the left chanel than the right - quite an oversight. So I prefer the original release's sound quality.

My meaning was they are audibly different unless you're - say - listening to it on a pair of PC speakers from 1995. Mike was asserting they sound exactly the same which they really don't. I didn't mean that one was necessarily superior over the other but there is a clear difference. I can't recall a specific problem with 'Reality' but I do remember thinking that the '94 version was a little brickwalled and unnecessarily loud in places. That said, one or two of the tracks benefited from that with bits of instrumentation becoming brighter and easier to distinguish next to the Factory CD.

The Frank Arkwright 2012 remaster is pretty definitive. It's somewhere between the two previous masterings, in my opinion; louder and clearer than the Factory mastering but not as harsh as the Morris one.

I remember a chum playing me the '''''new''''' '94 'Lec and Parlophone were touting it as a warm-up for Autumn's follow-up (SIC). I'm not sure what I was expecting - I just remember thinking there wasn't enough difference to warrant purchase, as there may be with radical remixes.
That reminds me: I remember another chum saying it was cool that the 'Lec were on Parlophone cos a major label would push them to making loads of new music and not sitting on their fat arses à la Factory... Yup, bugger all for three years and it was still crap.
