Just a heads up for those interested. The 3rd May 1984 edition of Top Of The Pops which featured New Order performing Thieves Like Us live is getting a repeat this upcoming Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC4.Grab yer high quality recording. Also on the programme are Blancmange ( remember them? I quite liked some of their stuff actually and I think they've just done a new album ) Human League ( performing The Lebanon? I liked that one of theirs even withstanding the " where there used to be some shops" line), OMD and more.

Thanks for the head-up on this.
If anyone does grab a copy, I'd be very grateful if they could let me have a copy. I don't possess either the technology or ability to do this myself.

There's a popular misconception that NO always did live-but-shite TOTP appearances which did chart performances more harm than good. Like a lot of the mystique around the band, it sounds awesome and fab and very NO but isn't actually true, or at least ain't been true for Decades till A Later Date. BM sure, but TLU is fine - Gillian actually said she was proud they managed to do justice to it - while True Faith and even the much-maligned Technique trax (Bernard: 'The hardest LP to play live') are hardly an embarrassment. In fact this was when they won over a bunch of fans, including that cunt called Michael Monkhouse. After that they were a finely-honed live outfit and it's unsure TOTP appearances were live at all, let alone crappy. Only half the synth seems to be covered in World, and Hooky's bass has a fascinating ability to play itself in Ruined in a Day and Here To Stay. File under: NO the indie band, NO never play the same set twice, NO tell interviewers to fuck off.

Totally agreed, Michael. TLU is a great TOTP performance, as were True Faith, Fine Time and Round & Round.
There were quite a few other great NO TV appearances back in the 80s. Celebration, Switch, The Tube, Big World Cafe.
Really, the only dodgy TV appearances were Blue Monday on TOTP (not really all that bad) and the infamous Rock Around The Clock (quite understandable, given the circumstances).

It would have been a good performance if it wasn't for the bass being way too high
Its no wonder Barney hated him

Yeah Hooky's bass was way too loud but it was really great tv performance.Up there with the great television events of the 20th Century, like The Beatles doing All You Need Is Love on the Our World first international satellite broadcast in 1967 or the moon landing in 1969 (though the conspiracy theorists would argue that one)Hey i'm turning into keepitcoming.Or i'm just pissed[:) Shame Gillian didn't have time to iron her dress beforehand though. Wasn't this the TOTP performance where some other band apologised to New Order for miming? I think it's a great performance and I've got no problems with Hooky's bass being as high as it is.
I've never agreed with Barney's (latter) philosophy of why he starting miming on T.V, because the live performance 'didn't do the particular track justice'. He kind of misses the point of the band he is in. I would rather hear a terrible live track than a track being mimed. Anyone can mime. New Order miming look ridiculous.
