http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/5687241/peter-hook-on-the-rediscovered-joy-division-new-order-tapes-there-is-no-happy

I don't agree with his 'OMG internet bootlegging' attitude. The material on the tapes, while interesting, is probably not going to make a ton of money, and that's not because of internet illegal downloading. Do you really expect music from nearly 30 years ago, mainly outtakes or unreleased stuff (and maybe there was a reason for it being unreleased) to make a ton of money? He should be more realistic instead of blaming that on internet illegal downloading.

But if what he says is true about offering her a lot of money, but her turning it down, or (apparently) New Order's legal person giving him permission to act on their behalf, well, I don't have much sympathy for this lady.

Good question... Surprised Hooky hasn't bought them...

I'd also like to know what's happening with the video tape of the three piece NewOrders 1981 gig at Hurrahs in USA... There were snippets of that on the go about 10 years ago..

The Hurrah footage is frankly superb, in visual quality, performance and, especially, significance. This was only there 5th gig as New Order, was when they were still a three-piece and, I believe, was the first gig after their equipment was nicked.

Shame only the Dreams Never End clip is still on youtube. The other clip is even better, but is sadly no longer on youtube. Steve singing Procession, Ceremony and, presumably, joint vocals of Cries & Whispers (only Hook's vocal were shown in the clip). This has to be the only video footage of him having a crack at the vocals (from behind a keyboard for Procession and whilst playing the drums for Ceremony).

I would kill for the complete gig, which presumably exists (or at least is mostly complete).
Well 'kill' may be too strong a word. :-) But I'd pay a fair amount of money.

Hopefully, this footage will be on the rumoured box set that Steve is working on.

Can't recall exactly why now but isn't the generally accepted opinion of this Julia Adamson woman is that she's a fairly untrustworthy person, a thoroughly unsavoury character? The Theresa May, if you like, of the "indie" scene.

Yep,Rocket Mick has thanked me for that last comment of mine.I take it then that he agrees with what i've said in that Julia Adamson/Nagle is a thoroughly despicable person, a thoroughly untrustworthy scumbag, a bad egg by all accounts.I mean, if Julia Adamson would like to come on here and defend herself....go ahead,Julia.....I'm sure she would be chomping at the bit to defend herself...... so, over to you, Julia.......

Hi. I feel obliged to reply to this insipid victimisation of me as not only are there hits on the website from this page, but with New Order well on the Manchester International Festival bandwagon this year, I feel obliged to reply, rather than 'defend myself'. Your accusations are obviously stupid. I've been a socialist since Hannett educated me about such in 1980 - so that's my politics. The tapes have had various claimants declaring they belong to them, but the fact is they belong with the copyright owner and in the case of the Joy Division copymasters the rights lay with Warner Music.
The took me to court along with Joy Division members and estates. I had no representation as there's no help for cases such as this. I do have a very strong claim on ownership of the tapes (this is different from being the copyright owner of the material on the tapes). More than 3 solicitors have said as such.
Although there's a gagging order in place about the court case, I am allowed to discuss it with interested parties, of which you and this forum/website are clearly one. Warner had very aggressive lawyers, who I believe run the Warner office in UK. The courts voluntary legal assistant (there to help the court cases go swiftly for those without representation) noticed the clear case of ownership I had and approached Warners before the court commenced to discuss this. He came back visible shaken saying he had never been treated so rudely and that they had broken many codes of conduct in that discussion.
I lost the case as Warners said I was a bootlegger amongst other things.

Anyway there were no financial transaction of any sort, not even for costs to get to London for the hearing. I've had many folk tell me otherwise, but these are the facts.

I was a sound engineer at Strawberry and Yellow Two studios in Stockport which is why I knew about the tape library being thrown away. Web page about it here http://www.invisiblegirl.co.uk/archive/1984.html

There's an exhibition about Strawberry Studios on at the moment, worth checking. https://www.facebook.com...awberryRecordingStudios/

Just heard 'True Faith' by New Order on 6Music - snare just isn't quite the same, is it, without Hannett.

Thanks for visiting and commenting Julia, this is an unexpected bonus. If you are reading this, can you clarify the result of this:
Quote:
I lost the case as Warners said I was a bootlegger amongst other things.
Anyway there were no financial transaction of any sort, not even for costs to get to London for the hearing. I've had many folk tell me otherwise, but these are the facts.

Do Warners now have the tapes? Did they effectively get them from you for nothing (albeit you incurred some costs)?

*EDIT* Also in this Billboard article Peter Hook says
Quote:
“She’s found it -- great! Brilliant! You’re our mate forever!” continues Hook, explaining the approach he had hoped to take with Adamson. “Here’s a finder’s fee, a thank you, and we’ll give you a credit on the record. We’ll even give you a point on the record, because we wouldn’t have been able to do it without you.”

I don't know how much of that comment was speculative, but if a finders fee was offered, did you feel it was insufficient? If so, can you help me to understand how that fits with your socialist ethos? I realise this question may sound like I'm trying to catch you out, but as a fan I'm just curious to make sense of it all.

Oh, and what hapened to the other artists' tapes such as Magazine and Psychedelic Furs?

Dredging up an old thread I know - but it was mentioned on the JD forum the other day and I realised that the Invisible Girl site had a photo and more details of the reels

In the context of the Movement box set which we've analysed to death, I'm curious as to what we make of the second reel?

Dated 15th September 1980 (so after the Western Works demo, but just before the band went on the US tour)
Listed as Joy Division - "New Order" Theme Music on the spine

3 tracks. 1. Short and 2 x Long Mixes - no track title though.

The comment from Invisible Girl says this may be instrumental mixes of 'green' - but it's far too early to be Everything's Gone Green right?

My best guess is maybe the 7" edit of IALP and then the 2 different 12" mixes?

Mark Johnson's book says they recorded the first version of Ceremony and IALP in the US on 22-23 September, but then Hooky's book describes that session as "finishing the recordings".
Maybe IALP was already completed and mixed at Strawberry before they went to the US - but seems unlikely. In which case - what is it?

Yeah, far too early to be EGG.

Was IALP recorded at Eastern Artists Studios, New Jersey at the same time as Ceremony?

If not, IALP does seems the most likely candidate. Especially considering they'd not written too many songs by 09/80* and the fact that we know that there is 1 x 'short' mix and 2 x 'long' mixes of that track.

* 9 tracks by my reckoning (Ceremony, IALP, DNE, Homage, C&W, Mesh, Truth, Procession & the very rare Hour).

Most sources seem to suggest that it was. They recorded there for 2 days, one day per song

However - Hooky does describe it as "finishing off" the recording of the single there -so it's plausible that they started it at Strawberry before they left and took the tapes with them.

This tape box is clearly marked as a "master" though - which means if it's IALP - then that must have been recorded and mixed at Strawberry before they even left for the US!

These tapes have been in Warner's possession for a while now, so I think if there was anything rare on them then it would have been included in the Movement boxset

Not sure if there are any clues in Rob Gretton's diary (I don't have a copy) - and also I note that the Strawberry Studios exhibition featured the diary for July 1980 - July 1981 so theoretically should have this session in there
