New Order eschewed titling its songs after its most obvious or oft-repeated lyrics... These are the kind of generalisations that continue to fascinate folk but have sweet FA truth in them. Regret, Shellshock, Confusion, Here To Stay, Crystal, WFTSC...
Ian Curtis, the band's leader in its previous incarnation as Joy Division... One learns a new thing every day.

I remember going into town one rainy November Monday in 1986 and buying the 7" and 12".That was as exciting as life got for me in those dark, English, 80s winters at the age of 18.

I don't think i liked the Pettibone 7" mix any more or less than the album version, it was just a variation. The thing that bugged me bout the 12" Pettibone mix was the fact there was no Hooky whatsoever. The great thing about the 7" Pettibone mix was the growly Hooky bass bit near the end.

I remember thinking back then that the reason it wasn't a big hit in the UK, or at least a high chart hit was because they released it after the album. They should have released it before the album came out instead of State Of The Nation.

It is hard to believe that BLT only made it to No. 56 in the UK charts back in 1986. New Order had a reasonable fan base by that stage and the general music fan would have been well aware of them to. Its low chart position is indeed Bizarre!

bizarre love triangle was an average song when it came out, and to me it represented them going full on pop music.

especially the mixes, it did make a huge dent in the dance charts in america, and helped people over here get exposed to them.

for me, it was just another release. that later became an 80's staple.

Truer words have ever been spoken.

You best focus on lifeless cover versions and endless lists of remixes...

I actually heard the 12" version of BLT before hearing it as it sounded on Brotherhood and have to say I much preferred the 12" mix, as for chart positions for me New Order appeared in 1983 with Blue Monday and then pretty much disappeared again until 1987 with True Faith which prompted me to buy Substance, turned out that I vaguely knew TLU, TPK and Shellshock so I must have heard them at some point on the radio when they were released as singles but overall considering that it was a singles collection most of the songs were unfamiliar, point being that they rarely got played on the radio over here except at night by the like of Dave Fanning so they must have been releasing singles that were completely ignored by day time radio, all during the 80s I was an avid radio listener along with being a TOTP addict.. Before beginning to collect their music in 1987 my entire New Order and indeed music collection pretty much consisted of the Blue Monday 12" purchased in September 1983 when I was 12.

Just shows how our opinions vary. I've come close to considering BLT my favourite song of all time. However, I have never owned the version I really like, which is the one on the official video (minus the dialogue). It seems to combine the best elements off Brotherhood and Substance. What's the mix called?

That's the seven inch version (remixed by Shep Pettibone). Can be found on the new re-remastered version of 'Singles' and (I think) 'Total'. However, the video has the intro to Shep's 12" version prepended onto the start of it, for some reason.

Did they really have a major fan base back then? Blue Monday excepted, most people I knew became aware of them with True Faith / Substance and Technique.
The best mix would be Hague but he loses half the second instrumental break. WHY?

i thought 'state of the nation' and 'shellshock' were much better singles,
and that bizarre love triangle was just another standard dance song.

also, the pop lyrics in it weren't as thought provoking or deep.

that's why it signified a shift in their music.

I love the lyrics on BLT and the way Bernard sings them: the many emotions of guilt, excitement, love, bliss, paranoia and suicide - not bad for a song just two verses and a chorus.
I'm unsure why you categorise BLT as being so different to other New Order dance orientated love songs like Confusion or Shellshock.

State of Nation is one of my least favourite from New Order singles from their classic era. The lyrics seem pseudo-intellectual and I reckon a load of bollocks...

One of the first times I ever heard it was when a DJ played the 12" A side in a club when the place had just opened on an empty dancefloor. It sounded like God herself was kissing my ears.

Anyone who thinks that Shellshock and SOTN are better songs doesn't understand music. Shellshock and SOTN are OK album tracks unjustly promoted to single status. Anything on "Low Life" knocks ten shades of excrement out of Shellshock and SOTN. (Can you imagine how good the b-side dub mix of "This Time Of Night" or "Face Up" would have been?)

I didn't notice that the 12" was Hookless until 2 years ago! I was putting this together

https://www.mixcloud.com...gle-full-length-re-edit/

I realised about 85% of the way through there was no bass on it at all. The thing is for me, there's nothing wrong with pop music. When NO went a little brighter, there was nothing to be ashamed of in that.

of course you can find a differing opinion
but you'd be wrong
i wish more average new order songs had been written
instead of substandard will this do barney mcgrew crap like Shite Of The Nation

Yep i've never rated Shellshock.I remember first hearing the 7" on the radio and being massively, massively disappointed and it never got much better on further listening. It was utter dogdoo.I enjoy some parts of the 12" and Shellcock from time to time but only give em a spin once in a blue moon.

State Of The Nation i rate slightly more than Shellshock but not by much.

Did NO have a big fanbase by around the time of Bizarre Love Triangle? hmm... a fairly big one but not big enough to worry the charts with million selling singles. Most of the people who bought Blue Monday probably never bought a New Order record again in their life.BM was their first and last New Order purchase.

the last truly good song from new order, that still had the 'indie' sound to it was 'touched by the hand of God'.

bizarre love triangle was them selling out to the pop crowd, and pretty much never looking back.
pretty much every single from then on showed how they lost themselves from their roots.

it was nice enjoying new order while it lasted back then.

oh, how time has not treated them well since then.

Listening today for the first time in years to Pettibone's dub version 'Bizarre Dub Triangle' Hooky is present on that mix.Or at least right at the end like he is on Pettibone's 7" mix.Little odd in retrospect how Pettibone erased Hooky from the main 12" mix but put him on the dub version.

Maybe not so odd, considering Hookys behaviour and attitude to producers.

It probably has more to do with limp-wristed poptastic producer sensitivities than bitching. 'He was a rotter! I shall NOT use his work!' That's more Hooky's attitude.
