the entire Republic album to me is perfect. i didn't always feel that way because I used to skip special, young offender, and Avalanche...but like a fine aged wine one day it all became perfect. when your driving down the road on a sunny Southern California day with the windows rolled down, bass turned all the way up forcing everyone to appreciate ruined in a day, spooky, and times change there's just no going back.

Well, good call, from the polls.

Singularity was winning also, and will be released in March.

Maybe one more after this, or that might be it for the album.

Again, now the singularity is on the verge of coming out.

Will that be it for the album. I think so. Only on a rare occasion have they released a 4th single.

I'm hoping Academic will round off an even four singles from Music Complete. Wonderful track. We've had a guitar track with Restless, two dance tunes in the shape of Tutti Frutti /Singularity so a return to guitars (with an electronic edge) would be perfect to balance things out. Academic was released as remix stems along with Tutti Frutti and they've just introduced it into the live set which is hopefully further evidence it might get it's own release.

I know Mute's approach has been remix heavy but a b-side, no matter how low-key would be great... even just a Stray Dog-esque instrumental for the fans perhaps.

I think there'll be a 4th single.But that'll be it i reckon; i'd be very very surprised if there's a 5th.

You'd put money on a 4th single being Academic or Superheated or maybe People On The High Line but they may surprise us and stick out something like Unlearn This Hatred which i'm not a big fan of though i don't mind extended version.

Am I missing something here? Aren't there already 4 singles from the album?

Restless
Plastic
Tutti Frutti
Singularity

Was Plastic not an official single?

And judging by the tour setlist, it seems that People on the Highline would be an obvious choice. I don't think they're regularly performing Academic live. So that would be an odd choice for a single since the band doesn't care about it enough to perform it live.

The album version was released as a digital-only standalone track with the Music Complete artwork; a "key track" as is known in the musak biz these days.

Restless, Tutti Frutti and Singularity were all backed with promo CDrs, a myriad of remixes and unique artwork. Plastic had none of that.

I personally don't believe it was ever a Single in the conventional sense, even in today's predominantly digital world.

I never got around to downloading the digital pre-release of Plastic when it came out, but was the ending of it any different than the album version? On the final release, Plastic blends into Tutti Frutti, so I'm wondering if the earlier version just abruptly ended or actually faded out.

On a side note, I was just getting ready to compile a new personal NO compilation once I get my Singularity CD... so what is everyone's verdict on Procession being a single? I've always assumed it was the b-side of Everything's Gone Green for many years since Substance listed it as such. There's even a handful of vinyl copies which list the 7" version of EGG as the a-side. Did the Singles compilation perhaps get this wrong? Or is it considered a double a-side single, sort of like DM's Blasphemous Rumours + Somebody? I got rid of my Singles CD years ago, so I don't remember what was said about it in the liner notes, but it certainly sounded out of place on the album.

It was the album version - no difference. It shouldn't be considered a single, it was merely a taste of the album.

In the UK, Procession was released as the A-side of a 7", with Everything's Gone Green on the B-side. EGG was then re-recorded and released as the A-side on a 12" in Belgium by Factory Benelux, which was Factory's Belgian imprint. That 12" was only available as an import in the UK, so technically EGG was never an A-side on Factory proper.

The liner notes in Substance incorrectly attribute Procession as the B-side to FBN, when it doesn't appear on that 12" at all. Of course, Substance also famously swaps the titles of Mesh and Cries And Whispers.

So EGG is one of two instances in New Order's catalog where a B-side was so good, it was deemed worthy of being an A-side in it's own right (the other being 1963).

Is this actually noted on the original 7" vinyl anywhere? What makes this a little confusing is that on this Discogs website, there's a few different regions which mix it up a bit:

France and Spain had matrix numbers on each label showing that EGG is side-A and Procession is side-b:

France Side AFrance Side B

Spain Side ASpain Side B

Then there's one from Italy which clearly labels Procession as Side 1 and EGG as Side 2:

Italy Side 1Italy Side 2

Unless I'm missing something, all the other regions don't seem have anything on the label indicating which side is which.

When Bruce, Drew, and myself were putting Recycle together we did a lot of digging. There are quotes from both Tony Wilson and Stephen (who wrote it) alluding to Procession being the A-side. Stephen's quote might even be in the Retro box, but I don't have it handy to check.

There's something here about people are invited to make a music video for People On The High Line.So i guess that's the next single? Didn't Bad Lieutenant do something like that? A competition for a fan made music video.

Good spot FP. I guess that's one way to keep costs down. Not really the song I wanted as the next single, but if it gets a physical release I'll probably buy it out of some silly desire to complete the MC collection.
