What is the most hard to find New Order song out there or thought to be out there? I've heard that there is a Remixed extended Mr Disco out there somewhere, Never Heard it.... would like to!

And who knows the story behind the Subculture Berlin Mixes...?

Well if you include mixes/remixes it could descend into a bit of a trainspotting-fest.

As for actual recorded song... I dunno, I would nominate "Homage" from the Western Works demo session.

Never made it past that session (bar an early live gig?) but it's technically a "New Order song".

Vicious Circle (new order mix)
Sunrise (edit)
Sunrise (instrumental rough mix)
Rocking Carol

"Are you ready, are you ready, are you ready for this?" from the western works session would be my nominee. Theme is real obscure though too.

Wasn't "Are You Ready?" a sort of collaboration between Rob Gretton and certain members of Cabaret Voltaire as they were using their Sheffield studio at the time?

Can 'Theme' be considered a proper New Order track? I know it was credited to Be Music on the Cool As Ice LTM compilation 11 years ago.

A further search on Discogs shows it as basically produced/written by by Peter Hook. Already into trainspottery territory (sorry).

Vicious Circle (NO Mix) as JJ pointed out is a good one; cassette-single only and produced by the band themselves; the fact the Republic period spawned any b-side at all is impressive enough.

Too Late (and Turn the Heater On, if you're including covers) from the 1982 Peel Session faded into obscurity. Never performed live, either (to the best of my knowledge).

The Peter Saville Show Soundtrack was another rare one.

I think some of the Technique b-sides such as MTO, Don't Do It and The Happy One are pretty rare as well. And also from the Get Ready period the b-side Such a Good Thing and their cover of Vietnam.

Their version of the Mission Impossible Theme takes a lot of beating. Was that ever released?

The Peter Saville Soundtrack is pretty rare I guess. And long

Mission: Impossible Theme not released.

That's a weird one as I'm not clear if it was for The Beach or the second Mission: Impossible film in 2000.

I've heard both theories. I reckon it was to be used in The Beach, in the computer game scene. Then along came U2 with their version for the MI film and The Beach used different music for that scene. Total guess though.

Please forgive me if I have misunderstood (and I really may have misunderstood).
The first of the Mission Impossible films came out in 1996, and featured the U2 boys version of the theme.
The Beach came out in 2000. Are you saying that Danny Boyle was going to use the MI theme performed by NO in The Beach but then he didn't because Clayton & Mullen (U2) had done a version of the theme in '96?

MI 2 came out in 2000. Maybe it was for that, but the film studio chose to use Limp Bizkit's version instead (Limp Bizkit might have appealed more to an American action movie audience than NO back then). Or... perhaps The Beach was going to use it but didn't want to reference another film it would be competing with in 2000?

But more importantly, do we know that NO definitely recorded & finished a version of Mission Impossible? Cos if they did, I really want to hear it!
...Oh I've just answered my query on Google by finding the Power of Independent trucking blog from 09 which has the premixed Get Ready. I guess I missed all that (didn't have a PC in '09!). Unless it's available...somewhere else?

Oh, also on a vaguely related matter, the author of The Beach, Alex Garland has just had his directorial debut film released today in the UK. Ex_Machina has music by DJ Shadow in the trailer, but the film itself is scored by Geoff Barrow of Portishead. I think there may be one or two Portishead fans around here, so I just thought I'd mention it.

I think this is what I meant:

Or... perhaps The Beach was going to use it but didn't want to reference another film it would be competing with in 2000?

...but can't be sure.

i thought the U2 version went with that film. Forget it. I should pay more attention to U2.

They seemed to have recorded an early version of '60 Miles An Hour' (working title 'The Beach') and Brutal for The Beach, in the end only Brutal was used.

Quite honestly I think the joys of Youtube have put paid to the concept of rarity. The only real obscurities left are things that never made it out in the first place - Mission Impossible, Hooky's Mogwai collaboration (http://www.nme.com/news/mogwai/2692), Gillian's '12 vocal (http://forums.neworderonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=16234#post16234) etc.

From memory, there is a Razormaid remix of "Mr Disco", which is, to be polite, bloody awful.

The most obscure officially released song would probably be "Homage". Not even I can be bothered to get it.

In terms of remixes? Who cares? If you're *lucky* a modern NO remix has some identifiable part of the original track, even if it is just a drum hit. Many of them don't, and have as much noticable contribution from me on as they do the band.

Probably the cassette only tracks from various magazines in the 80's are the most tricky to find.

Razormaid are appalling. Take the original track and repeat bits so it loses its cohesion.
After Factory there were loads of mixes and most of them had nothing to do with the original. Worst: Lionrock's 1963.

Homage was in their original set (at least it's on the Sept 20, 1980 Boston show I have, which is the earliest US show I can get my hands on, so I'd argue it's not as obscure as others. I'm curious what it was released on, not sure I ever heard a studio version of it.

Let's Go with lyrics never was released, was it? It's an oddity it never saw a release in that it seemed pretty well formed (n fact they played it with lyrics live one or twice).

i like some of the razormaid mixes of 'sub-culture' , at least the ones without the soul singer at the end.

they take the album version and extend it with the original sounds.

i like the remix also, but these razormaid versions were pretty cool.

also i think the 586 razormaid wasn't bad either.

586 was the first Razorshit (see what I did there? Oscar Wilde) mix I heard, on a bootleg double album 'Decadence'. I remember thinking, What a pointless waste of time - I could've done that meself with basic equipment and a free morning. Subsequent mixes haven't changed my opinion.
There was a great demo of 'Let's Go' I had on a demo/out-take/rarity cassette - never officially released but easy to find on Youtube now and totally different from the plodding reworking for 1963-95. It's classic NO syndrome: gems like this are lost for decades but wank like 'Pressure' and 'The Other Two And Pooh' get high-profile media pushes.

The problem with the Razormaid mixes is that they're essentially cut & paste re-edits (emphasis on the paste) as opposed to actual remixes. What you linked to is their version of the Record Mirror mix with certain bits merely extended/repeated.

you've got it the other way around.

the record mirror version was an edit of the razormaid according to discogs

this was not just a simple cut and paste remix, the mixes were done
using the multitracks and put together that way, along with new effects
and sounds that were not apparent at all on the album mix.

there are plenty of other good razormaid mixes out there:
simple minds, cure, erasure, kraftwerk, cabaret voltaire, ultravox etc, etc, etc many of them exclusive
and not at all like the released mixes. you just have to search for them.
