This should probably be in a FAQ...
I know this was probably answered before in the old forums, but I've forgotten. What's with all the different company names? What's each one for?
I know Fractured Music and Be Music are for publishing royalties for Joy Division and New Order respectively during the Factory years. What about the others?

I'm not 100% sure but I think Gainwest/Vitalturn are simply more publishing companies I.e. they were to the band during the London years what Be Music/Fractured were on Factory. This quote from Discogs sums up CentreDate pretty well: Quote:After the demise of Factory, New Order and their back-catalogue was signed to London Records in December 1992. Due to troubles with the receivership administrators, the whole back-catalogue was placed under the entity "CentreDate Co. Ltd." CentreDate was the rights owner until clearance between the artists, the new label, the bankrupt label and the administrators was gained (which was in 1995). "Clear" was Johnny Marr's recording studio in Manchester. A fair bit of Electronic material was recorded there as well as some early Oasis stuff. I'm not sure if it's still active or not.

I remember there being a massive Gainwest banner on the front of the Hacienda building.
Hope this helps. |

Not overly relevant but early '93 Hooky said the band were setting up a label 'Manchester' on London, 'exclusively for New Order and their friends.'

I though Manchester Records was more Rob Gretton's idea to cash in on the 90's guitar sounds as Robs Records was dance orientated, but it never happened.

Possible... It was just a brief mention in NME as they planned to overhype Repoohblic.

Found a link on the old site to a fantastic interview with Tom Atencio and Hooky where they touch upon this. http://www.neworderonlin...ic.aspx?Topic=Article003As I understand it... Fractured was Joy Division's and BeMusic was New Order's publishing companies, which eventually became subsidiaries of larger publishing companies (Zomba, Warners). They're the ones who collect royalties from labels and radio stations and they're the ones who sue and get sued if, for example, some washed up American folk singer thinks they stole his hook. Gainwest, created in 1987/88-ish was New Order's management company which consisted of the 4 members plus Rob, and encompassed the band's business activities, including their involvement in The Hacienda (hence the banner). Vitalturn was created in 1992 as the same thing but without Rob. Centredate was a company created by London which assumed the rights to Joy Division and New Order's (and The Other Two's) recorded output upon Factory's demise and functioned as their "label" until sometime in 1994 when all the contracts with London were settled.

What's the worst thing about Facebook events pages? Take all the fun out of stalking... It's true that every member of NO has about 6 million out-of-order interests. I wish they didn't, and just put some fucking music out instead.
