And it doesn't appear that Miller uses FAC 221 contract binders like Wilson did! Or napkins for that matter. Smile

Glad they've signed to a label that people might have actually heard of, although Mute aren't not the force they used to be (the press release on their website says 'The current roster includes Goldfrapp, Erasure, Plastikman, Liars, Can and Cabaret Voltaire' - so I'm guessing both Depeche Mode and Nick Cave are both signed to major labels for the forseeable future, so I'm not sure what kind of budget they'll be able to provide the necessary plugging for New Order to get a lot of people aware of any new releases) but hopefully this announcement means a new album/tour will come along sooner rather than later.

Personally I think this is great news, a label that gas always supported electronic music. I think they suit one another, both are legendary in their own fields with a point yo prove. Looking forward to a new album seems like there's a new lease of life

Totally agree.

What's best about it is that both sides are established, respected and have a long credible history in electronic music stretching back the 80s. It's a good match.

Coincidentally I picked up a load of (digital) Mute releases last weekend; all of the Maps (a.k.a. James Chapman) album reissues which is top notch shoegaze/electronica.

I think even if you're not keen on Depeche - and there are loads on here who aren't - there's no doubting Mute will probably do a far better job than Warners did towards the end.

You never know, Mute may commission another remix project, with Vince Clarke remixing Vanishing Point. (Would like to hear it, once he's finished his Jarre collaboration.)

Not sure if Depeche Mode is still signed to Mute, but it would be a dream come true for me if they did a joint tour together!

Love Maps, just got his remix set...very cool.

Happy with Mute too, good fit. Though after following all the crap with Moz and his label recently, I often wonder if in 2014 artists of this vintage wouldn't be better served by going DIY? ie Do they actually NEED a label? It's not like singles and videos mean anything anymore. Radio play isn't going to be high on the agenda. Record an album - which they should be able to afford no probs - bung it up on your site for whatever you want to charge, then head out on tour.

I agree that Mute is a good fit. They'll not only respect and understand New Order's place in history, their marketing and expectations for the new material will likely be more realistic (as opposed to London, who probably expected a string of pop hits).

Maybe DFA was a possibility at one point (that interview took place weeks ago). That would explain the bitchy tone of their denial tweets. Not only was it old, non-news, it was also a missed opportunity.

Also, Mute seem to know how to release albums, as in "properly" release them. They've got some imagination and enthusiasm for the artform because in 2013 they put out the latest Maps album "Vicissitude" in various forms including:

- 180g double LP,
- Signed CD digipak + artwork poster,
- 9 track bonus CDR with remixes and demos,
- 9 track bonus MP3 bundle featuring further remixes and non-album tracks,
- Full quality multi-tracks of at least 4-5 album tracks for remixing.

They also licensed the album (+ bonus material) to be released via Bower and Wilkins "Society of Sound" in lossless 24-bit.
They later had a fan remix competition and released the winning entry on a digital single.

The prospect of a new New Order album getting even half that treatment is reasonably exciting.

Looks like a great fit from where I'm sitting.

Mute can bring the creative verve to a new release that Warners/Rhino lacked, am looking forward to seeing what they suggest for production and remixes etc. Daniel Miller is in his 60s and still actively DJing, he was out in Ibiza a few weeks back with Richie Hawtin at Space!

They've also got decades of release and distribution experience, I think they use some of Warner's muscle in the States.

Interesting times ahead.

That interview was edited in a cute way to make it look like something it wasn't and grab a headline. Bit naughty. New Order haven't met with James Murphy and DFA's response was in some ways understandable.
