Interesting Link here... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-18579791Maybe Barney will do an MA or PhD equivalent? From BBC... Peter Hook, a member of critically-acclaimed bands Joy Division and New Order, is launching a music industry degree. The University of Central Lancashire is partnering the bass guitarist and other music industry figures in a degree in management and promotion. The university says this will be the first such masters degree in the UK. He describes the project as a "phenomenal hybrid". The university is also going to give Mr Hook an honorary fellowship. Although for anyone with a memory of mid-70s middle-of-the-road pop, he says, his only concern is that such a move might leave him with the uneasy title of Dr Hook.

I think he has good intentions. It's nice to hear him do something other than The Light or to talk about Ian Curtis.

ah we seem to have two threads on the go for this subject. For anyone who doesn't read the other thread, here's an opinion piece: http://www.telegraph.co....-bound-to-lack-soul.htmlEdited by user 26 June 2012 13:00:04(UTC)

Why not?? I'd love to have a degree from Hooky and his learned friends. How to be a band manager.

I don't wish Hooky ill, and I think he has good intentions, but I think the commentary made good points. That said...the people that are desperate enough to apply for this course---they will reap what they sow. Realistically, how many people would apply? How many would 'graduate'? How many of those graduates would be successful in one way or another? Surely, he may have good advice on what NOT to do, but like the commentary in the Telegraph said, there's no 'rulebook'.
Hooky kept on talking about 'soul'. The Stone Roses 'I wanna be adored' had that lyric 'I don't have to sell my soul. He's already in me.' I think Hooky has already sold his soul, even though he seems to have good intentions with this project/course. I'm not slagging him, mind you. Edited by user 26 June 2012 19:36:43(UTC)

interesting that bob stanley fails to mention the fact that his band st.etienne are co-headlining a festival with "Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures live without any other original member" in Croatia in September. judging by the tone of his article that must be really eating him up inside... all this should make for a great atmosphere backstage see you in croatia bob Edited by user 28 June 2012 14:25:32(UTC)

I guess Saint Etienne were on the same bill with many bands they are not too keen with. And when you see him in Croatia - what will happen? A knock on the head? Should he be afraid now?

I'm sure it's possible to disagree with something (and write an editorial/commentary about it) whilst still performing at the same festival. (What I want to say is that both have nothing to do with each other, so mentioning the festival would be unnecessary in the editorial/commentary).Edited by user 29 June 2012 02:03:41(UTC)

Stanley didn't really say anything offensive, in fact he wishes Hook well.
I don't agree with all of Stanley's sentiments (Cowell being "positive" in particular) but he has a point or two.
Otherwise it's just an opinion piece and an pretty mild one at that.

In Croatia we put Bands That Don't Get Particularly Well Along But Play At The Same Festival to trial by fire. The survivor then gets to play both slots. Unfortunately noone has survived yet, and we don't get many visiting acts; on the up side, it keeps our heating bills low.

people thought that was a threat? seriously? no. i'm just highlighting the fact that even though he's published a pretty spiteful article here, if they ended up actually meeting at this gig in a few months i bet the guy wouldn't even say anything. apply that story to most people who are spiteful in the press or on the internet. it's just life. |
