I know I am one of the only ones on here who loves Jetstream...

Just wondering, does anyone have the Jetstream demo? This is the version of J-E-T that New Order recorded before Stuart Price polished it up and added Ana Matronic's vocals. The demo version has only Bernard singing it and I am guessing it sounds a bit rawer? I heard a clip of it in NOOL, does anyone have the full track? Or has heard the full track? I'd love to hear it or at least know how it was different.

It only got an official release on Napster (!) back in the day but is no longer available to buy.

Someone put it on YouTube though:

I used to have a crappy quality 128 kbps MP3 somewhere, possibly the actual Napster file.

No, I like it too (although I seem to like most things the others dont). The single edit I will concede is a bit cheesy and rushed but the album version I thinks mighty fine. Old whatsernames got a decent enough voice and I'd rather hear her singing with New Order than her normal "band".

I also quite like the Richard X Remix but overall it wasn't a stunning New Order single, in my opinion.

Felt more like poppy Electronic with a "guest singer" and all - one of Bernard's schelebrity projects.

I remember buying the 12" & CDs from HMV Edinburgh at the time and wincing at the Ana Matronic sticker.

The Bunker mix (above) is good though.

using the umyx software,
it's trivial to remove vocals, etc:
====================================

jetstream - no backing vocals(-1 mix):
=====================================
http://picosong.com/qvXW

jetstream - no backing vocals no synths (-1 mix):
==================================================
http://picosong.com/qvj8

and for those that just hate the vocals, the instrumental,
jetstream - the instrumental (-1 mix):
==========================================================
http://picosong.com/qvjA

all of them have a cold ending, no fade.

Thanks so much for posting this, I didn't know the "Bunker" mix was New Order's pre Stuart Price/Ana Matronic Mix.

It's really interesting to hear this demo and kind of hear New Order's original version of it. The Stuart Price final is definitely glossier but all the things I like about JET, the Piano on the Intro and Choruses, the synth work, Hooky's Bass melodies..they are all here on the New Order version.

I have to say I prefer New Order's mix..it's a but rawer and more upfront...more New Ordery. I don't miss Ana's vocals. Hooky has some extra bass parts on the choruses that aren't in the final mix. There is also a little vamp section after the first chorus that was eventually made the songs outro. It's cool to hear little differences like this. Pretty clear from hearing the Demo that this song was definitely Bernard's baby...it's got his melodic sense and chord changes all over it. It does sound really Electronic-ish....but I have always loved New Order's synthy/dancier side and Jetstream remains, in my opinion, one of their best pop songs.

True, in this version, "Jetstream" sounds more like a cousin to Getting Away With It. New Order mostly sound best when they produce by themselves, they should have sticked to it for this track too.

Think I created my own Barney only singing mix with that fun U-Myx software that came with one of the UK cd releases of Jetstream . Amongst many various different mixes I did playing about that U-Myx thing . Even an Ana only mix.

Good mix really. The best one that I've ever heard. I never liked a lot of "Jetstream" to be honest, so that's a good surprise for me.

he-he, nothing wrong with Electronic...at least Hooky is not involved in it....the plonker is getting a bit on me nerves these days....end of the rant

Of course, Electronic were great. I just meant Jetstream sounds more like a solo Bernard song which probably would've worked better being done with Marr or by himself (plus guests). A bit like Miracle Cure which he did with Blank & Jones or Out Of Control with The Chemicals. Jetstream doesn't really fit into New Order band set up that well and just seems to sound more awkward as the years go by, in my opinion.

I'm glad the Bunker mix has had a bit of a resurfacing on this thread as it's a bit of a lost gem and the band haven't really re-released it anywhere else.

A good candidate for a future rarities compilation.

I agree that New Order often sound better producing themselves. I wonder if maybe using so many different producers on WFTSC was a "name" thing pushed by the record company..you know to get more attention for the album because some notable producers worked on it. I do like the gloss that Stuart Price added to Jetstream for the final version, but this version shows that the song would have sounded fine without Ana Matronic and they did lose some of Hooky's best bits, as well as some cool Synth stuff, in the final mix.

I imagine that Ana Matronic was also added as a possible commercial consideration, as The Scissor Sisters were quite popular at the time (and are a pretty great band in my opinion, one of the best live acts I have ever seen). But New Order don't need guest singers and producers to be great. They are already great. Their fuckin' New Order!

I do like the rawer and more stripped down feel of this demo version. Feels a bit "harder", if that makes sense. It does sound very much like an Electronic song...but it's got Steve's whipcrack drums on the chorus and I really like Hooky's bass runs throughout the song. Not sure if Phil played much on this demo version, unless he put his guitar down for a synth. But I think the Demo/Bunker mix is def a bit of a lost gem.

I'd like to hear some other demo's from this period. Would be interesting to hear how the songs progressed. I may be the odd one out, but I really liked WFTSC as an album. It has some great songs on it..Who's Joe?, Road to Ruin, WFTSC, Krafty, Jetstream, Guilt Is a Useless Emotion, Turn, Morning Night and Day. That's a solid 8 track album right there.
