there were some interesting techno mixes of crystal
that came out before the official versions.

i remember reading about corvin dalek releasing it,
and some other groups.

all of them became unofficial versions..and there
were even some exclusive lyrics in them..
=================================================================
Words from Corvin Dalek:

"Crystal was originally planned as a track exclusively for mfs (Mastermind For Success, Corvin Dalek's label) which bernard gave to mfs label manager, Mark Reeder. He wrote the song for Mark and also sang it and i and a couple of other MFS artists made the music for our versions (not remixes). But after Pete Tong (BBC Radio 1 DJ) heard them, he thought it was the best New Order single he´d heard since Blue Monday (not knowing that Bernard had given the song to Mark as a present) and the project was then rearranged to become a New Order record.

What that meant was that MFS were not actually allowed to release it as originally planned - in june 2000 - until New Order knew what they were going to do with it.

So much time has gone by without it getting released. Pete let me put it on my wet&hard compilation album Hotkunst and in the meantime we have now finally been granted permission to release it in Germany. The vocals have been used on the New Order version of the song (theirs is more guitar sounding) and the track sounds nothing like the mfs versions. Their track was produced by Steve Osborne and mixed by Mark Stent."

new lyrics:

Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001 10:09:39 +0100
From: "N21" <n21@pictime.fr>
Subject: (Fac33) Sumner 4 Dalek

It looks like Corvin Dalek was given a different pack of lyrics for
Crystal - the chorus as originally sung by Sumner goes like this :

"The closer that I get to you
The more you run away from me
Just tells me what I've got to do
You don't have to be afraid of me
I want your love, I need your love
I want the things that [others] must have
Whenever you're here with me
That's where I want to be..."

Crystal has roots in the Electronic b-side "Radiation" from the Vivid single back in 1999:

At around 00:25 amongst the keyboards and guitar effects a sampled voice speaks "We're like Crystal, we break easy".

It was obviously a lyric idea Barney had been playing around with since the Twisted Tenderness sessions.

As for the Corvin Dalek mixes, I'm familiar with the Porno Club and the Shatterproof Mixes; they're average at best.

New Order as a band made the most of the concept as a song.

You've got ears like a shithouse rat NaM!

Not listened to it all, am at work, but the step up at 1.25 is mighty familiar too.

Holy hell you are right, sampled voice says "We're like crystal, we break easy."

I always wondered if Radiation was some kind of precursor to Crystal.

I'd love to hear Bernard's original demo for Crystal..not the Corvin Dalek Mix, but the actual demo Sumner did originally, which was said by Bernard and Steve to be quite "Housey" before guitars were added.

I'd like to hear the Get Ready Premix version of Crystal too, but I cannot find it on the net aside from a brief clip on NOOL. It looks about 50 seconds longer than what was released...

There's nothing noteworthy about it. I have the complete pre-mix CD-R.

No major differences then, I take it? Crystal is the only GR premix I haven't heard...it was interesting to to hear the other premixes as there were differences, albeit minute ones, to the released versions.

Is the pre-mix version the one on the Here to Stay 12"? It's essentially a longer version of the LP mix.
