I went to see Peter Hook at the Garage on Friday night and left with the thoughts that this was a superior show compared to the New Order in Edinburgh show I saw last year.
Anybody else think the same ?

The comparison it's not so simple to me. There's good and bad points in both of them. New Order is doing pretty much the same set, but they still sound fresh and modern and frankly I think Tom Chapman is doing a good job. Nothing spectacular, but still enjoyable and fine. I really love the new arrangements for the old hits. Hooky and his The Light are giving to us a taste of the old New Order playing obscure songs, b-sides, more Joy Division stuff, but in a manner too much orthodox in my point of view. And the old New Order, with him in the band, never made it that way! In 2006 he complained in a brazilian music magazine the fans don't like live versions quite different of the studio versions and he'd like to do "jazzy" versions of Joy Division and New Order! (what he obviously doesn't do!) Anyway, I loved both shows, each one in a particular way. |

I just can stand Bernard singing Ceremony, Crystal, Temptation and Regret for these long 12 years. The same setlist for ages is awful really! |

The Light's instrumentation is amazing... much as ReOrder's is. Hooks voice and Rowetta's voice just doesn't work though, and I'm sure I can hear the whirs and clicks of cash registers at Light gigs, unlike NO gigs. Just my opinion, but Bernard's band is more "genuine" which is only sensible seeing as they are 3/4 of NO, whereas The Light is less than 1/4 NO. |

Apart from the fact that the bands are drawing from the same back catalogue, it's chalk and cheese. It reminds me a lot of Roger Waters and Pink Floyd, where both bands have a similar 'feel' but one is a precise reproduction and the other seems more fluid and takes more liberties. I saw last nights show in Leamington (it really only got even vaguely exciting during "586"), and I got the impression most of the crowd would have been happy to see Hooky just playing the hits - understandable. Also, it's odd to see Potts not singing any of the Monaco songs. Some of Hook's vocals don't come near the albums, I was wondering if perhaps Pottsy could sing some of them.
Sonically it's very similar to, and a damn good reproduction of the original LP's. I prefer the New Order show, because it seems more authentic, there's more of the original band and unless you're a setlist geek, there's a bigger element of surprise there. Also odd that the biggest crowd response of the night was the 'tape' of The Beach. But that's my view, certainly, I never thought I'd see "Doubts Even Here" live again.

I was *really* surprised by how quiet the crowd was until the encore - well, apart from the couple constantly yelling HOOKY I LOVE YOU / PETER YOU'RE A FUCKING LEGEND! every 6 seconds in every song. But a bloody brilliant venue. The Light sound very close to the records.

not having looked in for a long while , i noticed my user name as part of the last post . i am insufferable as to appreciating bernard and also as to the newest songs , when they come out . and i 'm sorry if i ever posted anything hurtful about peter. mostly i remember posting embarrassingly nice things about bernard that would make most grown men want to tell me what is what and where to put it . |

Been playing Preston 2012 and 511 a lot during the past 2 weeks while biking to and fro work. Hooky & Co kick ass on Unknown Pleasures especially Day of the Lords, Decades and Shadow Play. I actually prefer She's Lost Control from 511 because of his backing vocals. Obtained a bootleg of a PC&L gig that The Light performed. Seemed flat especially when compared to UP. I think Hooky does well singing Ian's songs but not as well on Bernard's. Actually, pretty fucking good on JD. Bernard, however, just does not quite do them justice except on a few, namely Transmission, SLC and LWTUA turning the later into a stadium anthem instead of the classic. Sure, he whoops them up but that's the energy vibe he presents on stage. The crowd is singing anyway.

Hooky singing the Joy Division stuff sounds really good. What about "Movement" and "PC&L"? I think it's just ok. But I already heard The Light's live versions of songs as "BLT" and "True Faith" and the vocals sounds really awful. |

Don't think the vocals sound good on either of these - BLT sounds as though it's just live vocals on top of the original recorded instrumental.
Double standards considering Hookeye's recent remarks about NO's mimed bass. I'm not bitter, just have bad memories about paying to see Revenge in 1991, ooft.
