When we saw One Direction member Louis Tomlinson wearing a Joy Division “Love Will Tear Us Apart” T-shirt at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards last Sunday, we couldn’t help but give him a little side-eye action. Have Joy Division joined Ramones as the go-to T-shirt to express how edgy and rebellious you are?

Ramones, Motorhead, Joy Division, AC/DC have all joined the iconic consciousness of the nation. Saw a stunning 20 something girl Brighton last w/e wearing a U.P T-shirt and she probably had no idea who Ian Curtis was. Doesn't really matter I suppose.

i disagree with this. i know what you're saying, and i know getting on a high horse about it does have shades of being one of those annoying people who publicly corrects other people's grammar. but i feel quite strongly that there's something sad about a band becoming a brand. lazy cultural shorthand for claiming allegiance with a tribe, when actually the commercialisation and mass consumption of this type of imagery is pretty much the antithesis of the values of the original.

i am reminded of my VERY WORST FILM EVER - 500 days of summer, which practically had a checklist of cool boxes to tick. we need to know this is a quirky guy operating outside the mainstream? let's stick him in a JD tshirt. FUCK OFF. (and don't even get me started on zooey deschanel.)

UserPostedImage

there's so much of this about. style over content. superficial referencing of artists (of all kinds) and ideas, with no genuine thought to its meaning. all joking aside, it's what pisses me off about "hipsters". i would rather see some depth, some originality. make something new, you cunts.

I would like to have sex with Zooey Deschanel. If Melanie C's busy.
Taylor Swift? 'We are never ever ever getting back together' is hailed as a feminist anthem. Shame cos it was written by her legs.
There are three levels of cultural awareness. The first is when you absorb and use it to create something personal. The second is when you absorb but slavishly imitate. The lowest is when you just name-drop in the hope it will reflect well on you. One Erection.

Good points , Nora . Agreed, well said.

It also seems these days that a lot of people seem to go to festivals just to get themselves seen on TV .

Grrrr I find the T shirt thing very annoying!

You don't have to like the band it's all about the image isn't it? Bloody Hipsters. I recently saw a kid on CH4 drama Hollyoaks wearing a Fall Hex Education Hour T shirt and I almost fell off my chair! And also a photo of Posh Spice wearing a Cure baseball cap? Yeah right!

The whole festival thing I find equally irritating. I'm old enough to remember it used to be a bunch of hippies sitting in a field listening to music. Now you can buy the festival uniform on the high street. There is no revolution anymore it's just about commerce.

God I must be getting old!!

Well Linus, that put the cat amongst the pigeons.

Who gives a F**k, about whatever direction and the worlds anal retards wearing J.D. merchandise.

Any c**t can buy a t-shirt and walk around looking exactly like one. The worry is, will some "cowell" clown make them do a cover version of LWTUA, and put laods of "come on's" into it aswell. If that happens then I'm off to bake a cake...............Hi

slow down.

Is it a requirement that "rose from the ashes" has to be used in reference to New Order and Joy Division?

1979 song?

And who is "New Direction" anyways?
