... I think they tended to avoid JD till 98, simply 'cause they didn't want to be seen as a spin-off. When they established themselves as a valid band they felt more comfortable going back to the past... It's understandable. John Lydon did the same with PIL gigs and Sex Pistols songs, as did McCartney the solo artist with the Beatles heritage.
I seem to remember An Ideal for Living (which isn't all that unaccurate when you consider this was yonks before the Internet and NO were one of the more elusive outfits) it's no coincidence they played LWTUA when Blue Monday was going ballistic. I could check this out but I'd rather think about Cameron Diaz' breasts. They'd also sometimes use JD tracks for soundchecking as they're easier to play.

I thought when they came back in '98 that Joy Division got far more attention than it had ever had before. Fresh off the back of the Deborah Curtis memoir and the Heart And Soul box-set which all three surviving members had a hand in compiling New Order were regularly playing JD songs in the set and even re-recording a couple for John Peel's show. From 2001-6 they included JD songs in practically every set with at least a minimum of three getting an airing per gig. The first time I ever saw them in 2001 they played four JD tracks, I've still got the rain-crinkled set list. The Peel Day and MvC sets in 2005/6 were pure Joy Division sets. The Live In Glasgow DVD from 2008 features no less than five Joy Division songs in the running order. They recorded instrumental music for Control. I mean, you could go on with this so I never get why he says New Order ignored Joy Division. Maybe during the initial 1980-1993 era of the band but lets face it, if they hadn't the Joy Division monolith would have strangled New Order at birth. It's generally accepted as a good thing they had the backbone to put it aside and make their own mark again. Maybe they weren't playing enough JD for his taste, which is different and subjective. The Mod is right yet again. They've said in interviews that the box set helped them be a little more appreciative of their body of work - and the band members themselves (as well as the Brown Owl docu) have said that though they though they used to play the odd live track, usually on a special occasion, JD only really became a 'permanent' (see what I did there?) fixture as of 98. There were soundchecks too (I have some back in Blighty somewhere) and the Ceremony / IALP (Little Boy) discussion isn't worth spending time on.

Indeed.
The only time they NEVER played a JD song (if you include Ceremony and IALP as JD songs) is 13 shows in 1993. They played - on average - two / three JD songs a year in the 80's.

He was talking about the legacy and the way the band was perceived. You can't just take a few words out of context like that
" 'They all think we're dead arty and intelligent and intellectual.'

He was saying no one blew the cover off of JD's reputation or did anything to change it, but the book will.
