We can live in hope right? I thought it might be useful to have a thread to keep track of the various comments made in interviews about the possibility of a new album
The longest wait between albums was WFTSC (28th March 2005) to Music Complete* (25th September 2015) - 10 years, 5 months, and 28 days
Which means that if nothing appears before 29th March 2026, then it will officially be the longest ever gap between official New Order studio albums
Given that they started playing Music Complete tracks live in early 2014 (18 months before the LP was released), it seems rather hopeful to think we aren't in for a longer wait
* Obviously I'm not counting Lost Sirens as it wasn't really a proper album in my book

I really hope they don't make another album. Nothing suggests they're working on new tracks as far as I know, and when Be A Rebel and PITL are in the setlist I'd worry about the quality content of any album.
Bernard is 70 next year so the last thing i'd want is euro-disco-pop tunes. Maybe time for something more reflective? Just my opinion.

I'd love another LP but, to be honest, I'd settle for an EP or two. 3-4 tracks on each.

Not fussed. I still have the happy memory of listening to substance (the gateway drug) for the 1st time.

I remember, many, MANY years ago, Bernard made reference to making an ambient album. If they were to make one more record, make it (as someone has stated earlier in the tread) reflective and introspective. Pet Shop Boys’ album last year was one of their best in my opinion and had a wistful feel to it. Get Eno in. Experiment. Reflect. I don’t want Be a Rebel to be the last thing they record.

^ Yes, i too remember reading of talk about them doing more ambient stuff. The 2 or 3 tracks they did for the Control soundtrack back in 2007 were really good i thought. Ok, they maybe weren't ambient but they had a certain restrained magnificence. I'd be interested to hear more stuff like that. But, i can't imagine them ever recording any new song or track again let alone a whole album. They're quite obviously just into gigs and touring now at this stage of their lives and career. Even if they made a song every year they would have had a new album with 10 songs in 10 years, I dont get it New Order are amazing Musicians, they have so much creativity and musical knowledge, for them making music is engrained in them, why would they wait so much to make and release new music, they have so much time on their hands, I am surprised Mute records is not pushing them to new music, it dont make sense to me. |

Amen!! I'm shocked we haven't had any new music from them in over a decade (Rebel doesn't count as it's from the MC sessions!)

They are pensioners, I hope when I am their age I'm not working and just indulging in my hobbies. I reckon an EP if your lucky based on that.

In the recent interview with Steve where he seems to suggest new music isn't imminent, he does point out that he has a studio in his home, where he spends most days working on music. So I don't think that Steve is the problem!

They've literally just flown to the other side of the world to play gigs. I'm guessing that sitting down in front of a guitar or keyboard and noodling around with song ideas is less taxing than going on tour - although perhaps also less profitable for NO these days. I would even suggest that writing songs is a hobby of sorts; it's not a typical job. I know that making an actual album does require hard work, but at the same time, I suspect they don't have to keep playing gigs now. But they do.

So I don't think that Steve is the problem! That might be the problem - they don't have a deadline and pottering away in home studios doesn't lead anywhere. Frankly (Mr Shankly) I'm not bothered as they're unlikely to change. There's more than enough great songs from their repertoire without being tainted by a Be a Rebel 2.0, imo.

Personally, I don't think we really need a new one... it's been a (really) good journey.
As much as I enjoy both Sirens and Music Complete, sometimes I tend to think that it would've been Ok if they stopped on Get Ready.
