I used to enjoy Kenny Rogers' Ruby when I was a kid (Kenny's greatest hits on the car tape deck). I also remember a cover version from the mid to late 80s that John Peel used to play. It was a sort of punky/shoegazey version with fuzzy guitars and slightly sulky vocals. I though it was the Young Gods but I can find no mention of them doing the song on their Discogs page. The Young Gods actually did a Peel Session in 1988 which is about to be released for the first time. But no sign of Ruby on there. Looked through this page and nothing jumps out at me. Pretty sure it wasn't The Damned (I would know Vanian's voice). Can't check the Gorehounds cos I can't find their version to listen to. I wonder if any other Peel listeners remember that cover version. Cos I wanna hear it again!
